Latency issues

why is it that in NS my latency is incredibly high but in counter-strike and other games it is fine, this issue is the same at my room at school and at my parents house in brazil... so its not my connection.... i guarantee my hardware is more than sufficient to be running NS and i used to play on this machene all the time untill this issue started occurring...

what can i do to fix this

by any chance do you have the graph at the bottom right of your screen? If so, check to see if you are being choked.
Otherwise, what are the average pings you have on both CS and NS?

no sir.... my parents do... im here for chirstmas/ new years....

    i live in alabama

my CS pings are better from there but my NS ones arent...

CS usually = < 60 have been able to make it to 100 on a bad day

this issue makes the game totally unplayable

Here's a tip: Play in servers that are nearby your current location.

It doesn't take much to realise that if you connect to a europian or US server from BRAZIL, you're going to get bad pings. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

Alternatively, if the server you are connecting is infact nearby you, and you're still getting a bad ping, you can try doing a traceroute to find out if there's a choke point somewhere along the way.

i play on the same servers and my pings one day jumped from less than 100 to 200+ i first thought it was my school choking the connection

but it dosent happen with CS. and it continues to happen anywhere i try to connect from... and every single server on the server list has a latencey of over 200

Could it be your ISP? Try a tracert when your ping jumps and you'll be able to see where the ping goes high (ie. if its you, or your internet provider).

I tend to get lower pings in CS than NS servers in general. I have no idea why but I get ~10 on CS servers and usually around 30 on NS servers, not a lot to complain about compared to pings higher than 100 thoughs.

how could it be my ISP ive basically tried 3 different ones

one at school (dunno which one it is one of the two we have in huntsville)

one at one friends house (charter)

one at a different friends house (Knology)

    one in Brasil (Virtua Net)

all result in the same thing

and i dont mean LAG spikes im talking about a consistant number like never below 200 EVER

this happened overnight about 2 months ago...

Do you get the high ping as soon as you join the server or while you're actually playing? Try changing your rate setting, type this in console:
    rate 20000

I see. I had this problem before and could not resolve it until I formated my computer. My entire server list would show up with 200+ ping. Formating is pretty much the last resort since the problem is obviously a setting somewhere. Maybe we can figure out what's going on without going through that extra trouble.

What have you tried so far?

    - re-installing NS?
    - re-installing steam?

Edit: Also, did you make any changes to your computer on the day that the ping problems started? Do you have a restore point before that date?

One possibility is simply that it isn't a problem on your end. Brazillian ISPs' connections are notoriously bad, and I'm sure the small amount of NS servers in Brazil don't make things any better.

He has tried different ISPs, one of them was from Brazil. Doesn't mean he is from Brazil.

no i dont believe i changed any settings that night... RE-formatting is hardly an option

ive reinstalled NS but not blown steam compleatly off and re installed and re douwnloaded everything (that was my next idea... but re dling would take a while)

i am CURRENTLY in Brasil but i live in Huntsville ALABAMA... will be back there on the 6th

The question is whether you get the same latency issues in Huntsville. That's what I assumed from your earlier post.

I have the same exact problem, everything WAS fine, then overnight it changed, my ping is usually fine when there are no players near me (like the ready room of a started match) but as soon as i see someone my ping shoots up and my "Choke" rises too and is never 0. Someone please find a solution to this, the last time i formatted my computer it was horrible, i cant bare to do it again.

This is what i posted a few months ago

I stopped playing ns quite a while ago (got addicted to wow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> ) but now iv wanted to start playing natural selection recently. So i launched steam, launched ns, got into a server. Ready room was fine (there was no players in there) and my ping was around 40-50, so then i went onto marines team i spawned and it was fine untill i saw another player (regardless of team) my ping would then shoot up to around 600-1300. This was happening on all servers but this lag problem was only happening on natural selection and was fine on other games like battlefield 2. I then copyed my whole steam folder over to my laptop and natural selection ran fine. So then i went around a few servers looking for help in the hope maybe somebody else had experianced this. I tryed changing all my rates.... no change. I was told to enable net_graph 3 so i did and i noticed that my "choke" would shoot up as soon as i saw a player (go from 0-1 to 1-13) and my "loss" would stay around 0-2.

I have never experianced this problem before with any of my games.
I have windows xp and a nvidia geforce fx 5200 graphics card (old but has never given me any problems)
I have high speed broadband and i am connected through a netgear router (wireless but i use a wire, the laptop uses the wireless function though).
