Lag Problems

I stopped playing ns quite a while ago (got addicted to wow <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> ) but now iv wanted to start playing natural selection recently. So i launched steam, launched ns, got into a server. Ready room was fine (there was no players in there) and my ping was around 40-50, so then i went onto marines team i spawned and it was fine untill i saw another player (regardless of team) my ping would then shoot up to around 600-1300. This was happening on all servers but this lag problem was only happening on natural selection and was fine on other games like battlefield 2. I then copyed my whole steam folder over to my laptop and natural selection ran fine. So then i went around a few servers looking for help in the hope maybe somebody else had experianced this. I tryed changing all my rates.... no change. I was told to enable net_graph 3 so i did and i noticed that my "choke" would shoot up as soon as i saw a player (go from 0-1 to 1-13) and my "loss" would stay around 0-2.

I have never experianced this problem before with any of my games.
I have windows xp and a nvidia geforce fx 5200 graphics card (old but has never given me any problems)
I have high speed broadband and i am connected through a netgear router (wireless but i use a wire, the laptop uses the wireless function though).

Any comments/help appreciated. Thanks.

    Go into your steam settings and make sure your connection isnt set to 56k speeds. Set it for your correct connection and that will fix your lag/spiking problem.

    Its under the settings - internet tab
    I myself have selected DSL/Cable 2M and I have a 10mb down/2mb up connection.

    Tried that the day you posted and it didn't work so i gave up, now im trying to fix it again, but with no solution is sight as very few people have / get this problem.

    Make sure your rate is set to 15000 instead of 5000. Check it in your console.
