Background sound issue

Right I started playing NS again and started with a friend, both downloaded the client from different links given through your website.

So we start playing and both notice this extremely loud background rumbling/ambience sound. we've turned the MP3 sound to 0, gone through and turned off music sound and even just tried muting sound in general. None of these have stopped this and it's almost unplayable.

Any help would be mostly appeciated.

I can't seem to turn the music off or the rumbling echo in the background. I tried stopsound, cl_musicenable 0 etc. Please help us.

If you want to turn the music off, mp3volume 0. As for the rumbling sounds, some of them you can get rid of by muting the ambience sound files of NS. Others seem to be built into HL and I have yet to discover a way to stop them from running.

How would I go about doing that then?

If you want to mute a particular sound, you have to find it. Look in your ns\sound folder. Depending on what type of sound is used, it could be in the map's folder or under another general folder. I think if you type soundlist (or soundinfo?) in console, you can see which files are loaded in order to narrow your search.

Once you find the file you want to get rid of or to decrease the volume, fire up a sound editing utility (sound recorder will do just fine). In sound recorder, for example, you can decrease the volume or delete the sound altogether.

I have been encountering a similar issue where I get an amient cracking sound effect in the background. This only occurs with the most recent version (which I downloaded today). I previously have not had any issue like this with ns for the past 2 years.
