<div class="IPBDescription">You wish someone told you your first week of NS</div>When you were a newb,
What do you wish people told you about NS the first week you were playing?
And in general, what is some common sense about the game
Quick suggestions of what to do, and what not to do.
I'll start:
A) Get off the SpawnPoint (Infantry Portal) as soon as possible,
otherwise you will get killed when the next player spawns.
B) Pressing E rapidly at the Ammo Station (armory) doesn't not fill up your ammo any faster.
C) When making requests to the commander don't describe your location as "Here"
Instead press the Right Mouse key and Request Orders, Ammo, or Health.

A lot of players feel that a base attack has to be end all be all, but that is really is not the case, especially for aliens.
On the server I am currently adminning on, I try to encourage the aliens to attack/counter-attack when we get "numbers" (meaning a lot of people on the other team are dead).
Similar to a fast break in basketball, whenever you can catch the opposing team off-guard, you get that ball down the court as fast as possible to try to get a bucket, and pressure the in bound pass (atleast when I used to play, gotta love that 1-3-1 Zone Full Court Press)
Same concept with NS. Someone on the alien team should always be looking for numbers, because lots of times alien kills occur in streaks, or clusters. When the aliens get numbers they should try to attack their base and force a beacon, OR collapse on their res nodes (furtherest ones from marine base first) and after that pushing as close as possible to marine start to harass them. This concept also applies to the marines, when the aliens are weak they should attack, even if the entire attack does not end the game. At the very least, it should enable the marines to cap more nodes and tech up, whilst at the sametime surpress the enemies nodes to increase the slippery slope.
Having situational awareness can make or break a game. Everyone on the team should be looking for an opppurtunity to attack, rather than just sitting back and being passive.
i started as alien, and i never knew about right mousebutton :/
neither did i understand the res, that you needed it to evolve.
and i scared myself senseless seeing the hive for the first time too.
and the hivesight,o boy. that so confused me.
what the heck were them blots everywhere ?
why did they light up?!like this lsd trip or something.
that and wondering why the other guy that was onos couldnt wallwalk....
i can remember the map too,it was 1.04 NS_Bast i think....
one of the first versions of NS...
that and someone gave me a welder at one time, and i ran around for an hour with a welder, trying to kill things.... -.- yay that was good fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
2. Welders only repair armor, buildings, and open weldables. I think I spent a good 3 minutes welding a decorative door before giving up.
3. The technology tree. I don't think the documentation that came with NS were very detailed (At least not when I started). I didn't really have a good grasp of the marine tech tree until some CAL player was kind enough to teach me how to comm on a small game.
cl_cmdrate
cl_updaterate

The following:

<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well the first 4 seem to be all connection rates related.
I can probably find a good FAQ for that
As for FPS_Max, how can that be configured correctly?

Also, I'd imagine cl_sensitivity is an important one ;D

Hell, for the first day I was playing NS, I left the 640x400 default resolution on ;D
i never knew about right mousebutton :/

to "fix" my rate probs I ALWAYS run a very big advanced netgraph on the right of my screen. It helps seeing probs.
hm.. what to told.. When I started only one gorge (ignore that now ppl) and now its build rts.
that skulks were ment to defend.. yes, that was nice to know.
kharaa = still teamwork
PLS listen to the comm
when new, stay out the chair
besides that i would say hit marines base more, especially to make them beacon, or to just win when no one is there and they have no turrets. i would also say play co maps to get good a certain life form.

Heh, the point being,
there shouldn't need to be a person actively telling them in order for new players to know this stuff.
The time I was like :O was back in 1.04 when someone informed me rines had a full map. Seeing as only rines had maps, the radar map was crap, and hivesight needed practise this was a godsgift.
Suppose my one was learning about building as a gorge. I spent the first month or so dropping chambers, and running from them, thinking I'd drop them fully complete (I was a child of C&C, select them, when they're done, drop them, and forget them).
Basically, I spent the first month dropping chambers, and wondering why my offense chambers weren't doing anything...
I wish people told me that taking out the turret factory took down all the turrets.
definetly

then
about pistol being used as a sniper
gorgerushes
eventually "flashlight" building
how to write scripts, (make fading easier)
lork spikes were fun back then.
1#THIS GAME IS ADDICTIVE AND FAR SUPERIOR THAN ANYTHING ELSE dont play if you want to enjoy something else ever again.
2# reg on the goddam forums ######bahg.
5) Rather than reloading, use your pistol when your LMG runs empty
6) Use your knife for cutting down alien resource nodes. Don't waste your ammo and leave yourself defenseless.
7) Change your gamma settings, defaults are too hard to see.
8) Land Mines and Grenades can be used for self point defense.
Standing ontop of a mine, and getting rushed will outright kill most skulks
Tossing a handgrenade straight down will damage yourself a whole 10 points, and outright kill multiple skulks if you get rushed.
9) If a guy is spamming a welder in your face, and jumping, he probably wants you to repair him
(Notify him if you do not have your own welder, and he can drop his. Usually it's a good idea to hand it back afterwards by pressing 4 then G)
10) Best low tech way to kill an alien offense chamber is to dump two clips of LMG (and leave your pistol for either self defense, or finishing the job)
Lean out so that you have a shot onto the side of the OC, but such that it can't shoot you back.
11) When you get handed land mines, place them practically ontop of base structures. Don't place them at doorways instead.
12) Landmines can be used as steps to climb up to vents
13) If you are getting attacked from a vent, press 5, and lob a grenade up into the vent.

What else are the do's and dont's that a newbie should know?
You truely dont know anything about NS unless you play/have played it competitively.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
And thats supposed to help people, how?
+1 For elitist snobbery.
It was advice, to join competitive play so that you can learn to play the game. Learn from those who know every (almost) aspect of the game.
Which is something I suggest you do.....Regretfully I've read alot of your posts.
Way to take my comment as an attack, you're not that special.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Hardly, I try to avoid ad hominem.
Just saying that your comment added nothing positive to the thread.
but knowing you are a sensitive competetive kind of guy, i will add this: i love you.
Man... I felt so ubar getting up the ladder in marine start on ns_lost when I had an Onos chasing me...
Only to find out that thing can get up there and eat me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
But it would have been swell if they said sieges were no big guns targeting players.
You guys need to take your petty snipes at each other somewhere else. If you continue to turn every topic into passive aggressive confrontations then we will force you to take them elsewhere.
