Actually I believe it's more along the lines of "Help create the emerging tech"

It develops technology 20 years ago and forces a monopoly around it. Later it steals open source technology and uses it, running the open source developers out of business. Then they party all night, doing crank and smack and coke and crack all the way to the bank.

The iGeneration has become nothing but a profiteering fad based on pointlessly re-made products for consumers by different companies.

Yeah, too bad the entire computer industry is more or less the same people releasing the same products year after year with slightly more power to incrementally upgrade the same things we have. Comon, the computer industry as a whole hasn't seen any innovation in hardware and the usage of it in years. Innovation's been dead, just now someone's profiting a heck of a lot more than they used to.

A new Pocket PC and a 4 GB SD card is still cheaper than the iPhone. And if you need 8 GB, you can buy two 4 GB cards. Or as many as you want. The difference being that you can expand the storage of a Pocket PC as much as you want, while this iPhone thing doesn't even have an SD slot in the first place.

I can see that screen getting scratched or damaged with the quickness...

It's a decent synthesis of voice and music / random stuff.

I thinks it's interesting that along with this they dropped computers from the name. Apple, inc. They want us to know they don't just make computers. I noticed everyone had an ipod along time ago, no need to reinforce it.

Never been a fan of iPods, i really like features, which this seems to have. The qwerty onscreen keyboard seems nice, i bloody hate normal mobile phones and sendind SMS.

Battery seems a bit weak though, but pretty good under the circumstances.

I'm surprised no one commented on the 2 year exclusive Cingular tie-in.

The same Cingular that has the universe's worst actual mobile phone coverage, to the point where you'd be better off dragging a 2500 mile-long string attached to two Campbells Chunky Soup cans. Naturally, you'd want the optional 2300 mile-long continental US-to-Hawaii string add-on card.

At the end of the day, I just want a phone that works as a friggin' phone. Mobile carriers seem to struggle enough with that before they start whipping in cameras, intarweb, Christina Aguillera ringtones, etc.

It's pretty and all, but nothing you can't already get for 1/2 to 1/4 the price...

Following the last two posts I'm currently using a £20 O2 network phone which is really basic, colour screen, text, contact list etc. with cheap crappy ringtones. This phone I have thrown about, cracked and removed the screen, keep scratching and it has chips etc. in and still works perfectly fine despite lack of features.

I used to have some £200 sony ericsson phone which has stopped working for no reason =\ MP3 player, MP3 ringtones, bluetooth, IR, internet etc. Yet it broke for no reason.

Some 1/10th of the cost of one of the "better" technologies actually does it's job better. It's why I hate phones.

After watching a few youtube clips though I am considering buying an iPhone when they appear, because I know a mobile phone store near me will be able to unlock it and get it working with my current sim and network etc. Most likely if I were first to get to him with one, he'd do it all for free and then give me a free upgrading card for being guinea pig. If this weren't possible though, the iPhone will lose in the UK, more so than the Three Network which is a joke.

    ... Right.
But at least 10-15 GB would be great.
    Then i think it's revolutionary.

Within 2 days of purchasing an iPhone, that pretty little screen is going to be covered with whatever your cheek is currently covered in.

    Draw your own conclusions.

No, but even if I did, I'm not buying an iPhone. It's just that even the cleanest person has oils on their skin that get there naturally. Those things are gonna be all over your pretty little touchscreen.

Save your money and go with a cheaper, established platform. Pocket PCs have been around for quite a while, and most cellphone companies offer at least one. If you can, get the UTStarcom PPC6700 or the Motorola Q. Only downside to the Q is that it doesn't have a touchscreen.

Aside from the non-expandable storage, non-removable battery and the ridiculous price, a major downside for me is the lack of a keyboard. A small keyboard would be extremely useful, and there's really no reason why it shouldn't have one. An on-screen keyboard is slow, way too small and provides no tactile feedback. It also uses up (very valuable on a PDA) a large amount of screen space.

The PPC6700 comes with a built-in slide-out keyboard. It's on the side, so when you slide it out, it automatically switches the screen to landscape mode. When you push it back in, you still have the stylus, buttons and joystick, and it automatically switches back to portrait mode.

As far as I can tell, the only things the iPhone has going for it is a flashy interface and a company that is very good at turning their products into a fashion statement instead of anything particularly useful.

Not me. I'm a Noxzeman from the planet Benzolperoxida IV.

I hadn't even thought about the gunkiness factor; fingertips, cheek, spittle. The iGerm is going to be a roaming petri dish like any other phone, but now you get the pleasure of actually seeing it all the time. I get grossed out just seeing the fingerprints on my car's Nav screen.

Maybe they'll release a version with the little plastic strips that cycle across, like they have on NASCAR cameras.

$333 for an 80GB Ipod video from Newegg and a free phone with 2 year contract or a $500 phone/contract that is only 4GB.

    Really?

If size is an issue, just get an 8GB nano for $240.

    Am I missing something here?

Not to mention that everybody already has a phone, so your standard Razr user like me doesn't even need that. Just get an MP3 player. Heck, if Verizon wasn't such a total tool about their hardware, I wouldn't even need the MP3 player. Just a cheap 1GB microSD card and the Razr would do MP3, too. But with all their lockout crap the phone is as good as worthless for anything but calling.
