Where Do Ya'll Rent Your Servers?

Or do you run your own ?
Hey, I'd like to know where you people rent your servers from. If you do run one, how much do you pay monthly. Or , do you people run your own servers on your own computers ?

Thanks

Run our own server.

Were a LAN Clan that bought it together, and when were not on a LAN we have it connected to a 10MB line.

Hosts 1 NS server, and our Website.

I run my own.. but I'm thinking of hosting some NS/CS/DOD servers.. I know CS and DOD servers go for like 100/m for a 20 person pub. But thats not possible with the NS cpu utilization. What do think would be the max a ppl would pay for a 16-20 person server with good ping (40-100) times would be?

Hmm, 20 people is too much. I'd say go with 14-16 people, 40-50 a month maybe.

16 ppl for 40-50 a month is not enough with the current cpu util. On the same server that it would take to run 2 NS servers with good ping times, I could run 4-5 CS/DOD servers at about 40-50 a month for 16 players. I could run a 16 person pub for like 6.25 a person. Anybody that's played on my server sees that I have killer ping times even on the killer maps like hera. I have 6 OC3's I don't know if anyone will be able to beat that price.. if they do.. I don't know how they make money (not on NS anyway).

I just checked my server.. I'm getting low 50's to peeps in Australia hehe and a little higher to Canada and I'm in Northern California. Not to mention the 150 ping to the guy in Japan who's a regular.

I think most people are renting servers for $8 - $10 per slot. I would like to see a 16 player NS server for $50 a month. (One that ran well).

We rent ours for $99/mo for a 20-player public NS server with hlstats, adminmod, and phprcon support from firebaseOne.com.

firebaseOne

They have limited support right now (though we have not needed it), but fast servers, great ping, and they have always been there for us on feature requests.

I run my own server, built it, and colocated it with my other servers. (I get half a rack)

Been running a 20 user server with little difficulty on the following server

Pentium III 1200
512MB PC133
Promise Fasttrack TX4000 Raid Controller
Two 40GB 7200RPM WD's in Raid 1
Two 45GB 7200RPM IBM's in Raid 1
Windows 2000 Server SP3
Half Life (latest Build)
NS 1.02

So far soo good, my server is full most of the time, in the evenings. In fact right now, I have 17 people on it.

I run my server on my laptop in my dorm room. It gets pretty good pings, especially to ppl on campus.

It simpler to just rent a dedicated server and run it urself...

http://www.rackshack.net
http://www.theplanet.com
http://www.cihost.com/

Are a couple of the places i know that rent good dedicated servers.

I live in a Dorm unforunately, so I want to rent a remote server. Anyone know any good sites that will support NS and host at a good price.

dude if your school's firewall allows you to host a server than do it yourself. Its so much better. Plus its FREE

In the airforce, the dorms are more like apartments, but I have a cable. I am thinking of just buying my own server and setting it up with a router. Hmmm, but it would probally be faster if I went remote.

As soon as a patch can get this Linux CPU usage under control a bit better I'll be renting NS servers. I have alot of requests waiting for the word.

www.rocks-hideout.net
www.barrysworld.com

both look good. I just need to find one with good ping and then my clan will be happy and joyful.

Ben128, how many players do you want on a server? Pub or private? How much do you want to spend?
• Ben128Ben128 Join Date: 2002-06-21 Member: 808Members, Constellation
Up to 100$ a month, and I am looking for 18 people minimun. A public server.
• BrutusBrutus Join Date: 2002-10-20 Member: 1555Members
I think people will offer you servers for that price, maybe, but they won't run that well.

If you want a 18 - 20 player server that is reliable I think you are looking at $160 or so, with a minimum of 6 months commitment. This is just my opinion, so I could be wrong.

www.rokcs-hideout.net working with Brutus @ www.cofrfps.com and have 2 18 player NS v1.03 server running trying to get these things runing good enough to rent out.

It does seems that they would need to be at least $160/ month at the moment with the current CPU load it puts on my Linux boxes. Of course as patches lessen the load (I hope) that price will shrink.

We are testing 2 diffrent 18 players as of today.

207.44.162.147:27015 Rocks-Hideout.net NS Test Server - V1.03
216.40.249.241:27015 Rocks-Hideout.net NS Test Server #2 v1.03

Check them out as we need players to kick these Servers in the teeth.

Box 1 is running all maps , even the worst CPU maps as 2 is not running a couple of them.

Thanks everyone!

I run a 16 player server on a machine I rent from Rackshack. (www.rackshack.net) It's a P4 2 Ghz with 512 Mb RAM. Rackshack setup was incredibly fast (I had root access to the server 15 minutes after I signed up, literally.) Their support staff is well above average in terms of technical knowledge.

When the server fills up, some players complain about intermittent lag spikes. I *believe* this is due to the exhorbitant CPU usage of the NS server, but I'm not certain. I have web sites hosted on the box, and that could cause the spikes, although I never had the same problem with a Tribes 2 server I used to run on the same machine.

When I chart the CPU usage during NS games, it is consistently around 120% with spikes up to 200% and higher. I really hope they get that fixed in the Linux server.

Anyway, the server costs me $140 a month. I subsidize the cost with web hosting ... I don't think I'd be willing to pay that much for the NS server alone.

I have almost the same setup as above, except I have 1GB ram. When a game runs on for an hour or so it really starts to eat CPU.

Sounds like a coding error to me ... something that's causing unneeded cpu usage, which grows with time.

Sorry, but we can't host Natural Selection at this time. Your server has been cancelled and you should not be billed. If you ARE billed, please contact us at sales@efrags.com

I think E-Frags uses rackshack.net servers. A rackshack P4 2.0ghz 1gb ram costs about $140 a month. You can only run 1 NS server on it at a time, maybe 2 8 player servers.

I run the spidergaming.com:27016 server at no expense to myself (and I don't have to pay to go to spider either, mwuhahaha!), although I'm sure it costs the guy who runs the place some cash. He set the whole network up himself, and runs a webpage and two half-life servers on it. The IPs for the servers (in case anyone is curious, hehe) are spidergaming.com:27016 (NS) and spidergaming.com:27015 (CS).
