Hi all,
New to the forums, but I figured I would post my work I have so far on this gorge model i created. Software used were Autodesk Maya 7 for modeling, Photoshop cs2 for hand-drawn textures, and Pixologic Zbrush for fine-tuning and details. Without further ado, here it is <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
<img src="http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8906/gorgeworkflowvp2.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
and here is a photo of the textured version. I will be making a 360-degree movie clip soon so you guys can see it from all angles.
<img src="http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/4468/gorgecolor1copyyn3.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Thanks to all who look and I will update soon! As always comments and crits welcome <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

them front legs...
the joints are placed the wrong way.
front legs should bend forward instead of backwards. (use the anatomy of a dog/cat to relate to realistic movement.its what i do when i draw)
besides its a big guy (nice and chubby)
the legs should be more firm and muscular to be able to substain that much weight.
you could make the body abit less round and stretch him abit.
besides if i imagine he closes his mouth he doesnt have a nuzzle <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
im missing abit of snout.
but then again im a 2d artist,not a 3d.
good work all in all <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
i love what you have done with the infestation at the end.
that always ###### me up in the end,trying to add infestation to a drawing...
I think it rocks.
I don't see any of you boneheads making source models.
I think it rocks.

You don't need to be an artist to appreciate art.
However, things like the skin on the legs are wrong. There should be folds in the skin so that the legs can actually move.
@sheepe - Eyes, teeth, spikes and mouth apparatus have been modeled seperately, so they will be added later- hence the "Work in progress" embedded onto the image.
@moultano - I agree with you. I am adjusting for more skeletal based structure.
@Femme_fatale - The legs are definitely need some work. your comments on looking at the way dogs or cats knees bend help greatly. thanks!
@Heyman - The word Gorge means "An instance of gluttonous eating. To stuff with food; glut: gorged themselves with candy. To devour greedily." If I am truly to call it a gorge, I want it to be this chubby, vascular, hippo-like creature so that it supports the name - which is why I didn't give him a longer neck and slim him out.
One I put the accessories on him, it will become a bit clearer. Until then, here is a video clip of the textured gorge in a quick 360 turnaround:

I will keep you guys updated as the model progresses. thanks a bunch! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Naah <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
looks good, That is how a gorge should look.
Maybe make the legs slightly longer and add more fat to the stomach area?
Amazing job tho, continue the good work! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

I didn't say I wanted a long neck. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I just wanted the presence of a neck, because I don't see one.
It looks like a piata.

Bahahahahaha
You hit the nail on the head! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" />
662 polygons is really small for what is basically a player model; since it has a normal map you'd be targeting a game engine like Source that can easily handle more. I mean, 1 thousand could be a realistic minimum for something like this. At least add enough geometry to let him animate.
yes it has some issues, but it still doesnt stop the peice from being a great peice of gorgie work fiting of fan art
hope my comments can help.
As always thanks for the comments and crits, I look forward to your feedback when I work on this model again!

As always, this is still a WIP and comments are welcome. Thanks guys! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pudgy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::gorge::" border="0" alt="pudgy.gif" />
2. his feet nails aren't all seen
3. should he be in dark green? anybody else want to see some other mixed colors? or is this fine?
4. his back legs should be up more, while front legs somewhat lower in the back legs
can you post views from top, right and left and front and back? people will see how he might look in 3d so maybe people can comment better. But a lot better from before thats for sure, good job man!!
i think it would look cool if it was fatter at the back and skinnier at the front - i had a custom model for hl1 once and made the gorges look hilarious that way.
Anyone wanna do a custom model of Yoshi as a gorge?
