???
What kind of models are 3ds models and how do you open them? I found a smartgun model but I don't know if it is a FPS model...
.3ds is a generic format mainly used by high end modelling systems like 3dsmax, its a crap format with messed up smoothing groups and old dos based truncated file naming system, it will support uv mapping co-ordinates but will not support skeletal based animations. and if the model is in .3ds its probably too high poly for the hl engine.

because most of these aliens models available for download are high poly, i know i have most of them. if it was in .ms3d format then the highest it could be would be like 16,384 polys but .3ds format can hold a larger polycount comfortably. the smartgun model if it is indeed the same one i have will be around 31,800 polys certainly too high for the hl engine to comfortably cope with. i did not mean by the very nature of the format it would automatically be a higher polycount, its just usually used for such, as it has less limitations than other generic formats.
the polycount could always be reduced, but he's right either the engine couldn't support it or you'd get insane lag. there's other meshes on that page that might useable.
hey um i really don't know aabout modeling, but i'd like to learn. How do i get 3dmax do i buy it? and if so how much is it? and i got and evaluation of rhino3d, just so i culd try and do some stuff but i can't even figure out how to import models and stuff?!? Sorry i'm really lame about this. I'd appreciate ne help. i didn't wanna start a topic for my stupidity. so if ne1 can help me out it wuld be appreciated.

weld vertices and if u are in 3dsm use the optomize modifier
or just avoid chamfers and extra detail
