Am i alone thinking this new version of NS is GOOD?!

<div class="IPBDescription">personally im quite pleased</div>Ok i really don't understand why there seems to be a fashionable trend of knocking the latest 3.2 update! And before i begin id just like to prevent the NS devs from killing themselves by saying GOOD JOB GUYS!!! It was a long time coming but 3.2 had addressed some major issues and progressed toward inviting a wider player base.

Some people say marines are too overpowered now others say they have the raw end of the stick. This comes down to issues like rt hp, alien movement/ stamina adjustments etc. But there seems to be no consistent critique on what exactly is wrong with the latest version! To be honest i havnt felt the adjustments have negatively impacted on my game in any respect. The new fade u just have to adjust to and sure they nerfed the lerk, but geesh it only costs 30 res and u begin with 25! It just climbs a little slower.. so what!

And let me point out that the fade changes were needed to counterbalance a FANTASTIC feature of 3.2: "+movement". Sure vets shrug thier shoulders and say "meh quickchanging wasnt that annoying", but it has made aliens more accessible to a wider audience and if ure truly pro you should be an even better fade/ skulk/ onos thanx to +movement.

So lets talk about things that we can ALL accept are GOOD in 3.2.
- NO MORE TELEFRAG!!!! about time really
- hit rego seems to be much improved
- model hitboxes are spot on now, no more hiding behind rts skulkys
- cloak meter, no more whinging, eg "AW SIF how did u see me?!... hacker"
- new onos is pumped
- marines are actually aware if a structure is under attack, an ability previously unshared with aliens
- teleport hive has removed the compulsion to get mc first everytime
- rine rts have less hp... now aliens dont have to chomp till the sun sets
- And last, but not least, +movement had made fading an option for low skill players as well

ive missed stuff surely but let me conclude by say CONGRATS TO FLAYRA AND THE REST OF THE DEVS. For a bunch of guys who started way back in 02 with a budget of virtually $0 youve done amazing work. And i add that most people would have givin up after that hacking fiasco... congrats for sticking with it

i agree, i like this version of ns. now i jump back between lerking, skulking and fading in combat now, before i was lerk always. but now i can fade and skulk easier cause of +movement, plus my lerk isnt so unstoppable now <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

The "trend" isn't specific to 3.2, I'll say.

Nice to see someone represent the silent majority's reaction with a thread, though.

Tis definetely good. Includes some "why wasn't this done sooner?" things like cloak meter and telefrag elimination.

I think the new version is great, except I'm sad because the fade feels slower and I sux with it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Don't get me wrong.. Although I do think rines are overpowered, in general this version has great features.

My personal favorite is the adition to healspray making a gorge able to heal itself. This makes a hardcore battlegorge that much worse to fight. Its actually very doable to get cara as gorge now. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Also for most ppl the +movement is ok. (I can't get used to it) Also the cloak and hive aditions are great.

I'll have to echo the sentiments above. Not getting telefragged (which could often shift the balance of the game by telefragging an onos goring a phase, or a lone marine guarding the same phase) is very nice, and the fade is actually working the way I want it to. Having to switch between attack and blink before made the fade seem like a partially paralyzed klutz. I mean, it's a highly evolved lifeform - shouldn't attack and movement be integrated seamlessly? While there's still a small delay, I find blinking to be much more natural.

I love the new version, I even feel for some odd reason that the community is better, but its most likely because I play on the TG server rather than 30 player, G4B2S games or siege maps <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />.

btw, I think mostly the only reason people don't like this version is because they cant adjust to it. Most people seem to be like that with this new edition. There are a few valid bad points about the new edition, but they were made for the better of the general NS population from what I think (rather than the super pro's, 40 - 1 score players).

Let's take major league baseball as an example. Lets say that instead of a bat, when you step up to the plate you now use a rolling pin from your wife's kitchen to hit the ball. But that's ok, because people will adjust to it. Never mind the fact that you've retardified the game. We shouldn't complain about that, we should just adapt to all new gameplay no matter how terrible, without question.

You don't have to neuter the depth of the game to make it more condusive to newbies. Newbies are farmed with intuitive rewarding gameplay. They don't even see the real backend of the skill curve. I used to think this way too, that you could bring new players in by making the game <i>easier</i> but after thinking harder about it, that's not the way to go about it since newbies will never notice it even if you do. The only thing it does for them is allow them to kill good players which destroys the entire point of a competitive game. See sig.

I liked 3.2 just fine. My only complaint was they made it easier for people to do the whole hit-n-run style Fade attacks since Blinking got easier with it's own bindable movement key, Blinking + Swipe + Meta in midair got super easy. Other than that I like 3.2, its great.

Hate to rain on your parade, but there is a pretty consistent trend in the critiques. Where has anybody said that marines are not overpowered? What I highlighted in your post is absolutely ridiculous.

The lerk got nerfed, but that's okay because it only costs 30 res and it climbs slower? You forgot to mention the loss of celerity's effectiveness. Lerks are <u>easier to aim at</u> and can't get away as quickly as before. This is a major change to their functionality. Then, saying that 30 res is not a big deal is absurd. Instead of wasting 30 res, you might want to save 20 more and get a fade instead.

Oh, right, the fade's acceleration got chopped in half to supposedly make it more newbie-friendly. The carapace fade is pretty much the dominant form now. The fade may be easier to control, but it is boring to play since its uses have been reduced. Why not keep +movement, give the fade more energy, and keep the old acceleration?

As for the Onos, what has changed? It's "pumped" in that you can now hold your attack button to charge?

And yes, there are good changes - some were overdue and it's great that they made it in. However, how did these alien nerfs get in?

So far I like the lerk. I'd like a 75% or 80% climb rate but that's really splitting hairs. My big favorite has to be the HLTV upgrade.

    No.

The fade was nerfed in order to dumb down the skill curve, and for no other primary reason. If that were not the case, the devs would have made an optional cvar like hud_fastswitch to make good players and new players happy.

I'd be the ones on the other side of the fence, but now ever since I took +movement seriously, I can hang with the top fades on some servers. I'm not a 50-5, but I can get to 20-8. +movement is a good thing.

However, it's still difficult to play as skulk and more so with the lerk. Stare at a marine for more than a second and be pistol whipped to death.

And as a marine, I don't have the best aim to get those runaway lerks or fades. We gave +movement to the aliens, but for marine aiming... well crosshairs are good, but what can be done to help people aim?

Overall, it's pretty much I save 50 and go fade. But I wonder how many people still have trouble with this class...

I do like a LOT of the changes made to 3.2

The only problems I have are (in ascending order of importance) related to lerk cost (or armor), skulk base speed, and marine movement. (ie: able to bunny hop forever and in bizzare ways without EVER getting tired) I'd love it if marines could do some Splinter Cell like moves (or at least a system like Gears of War for special moves), but it's unrealistic that they can bounce like kids on caffeine wearing all that armor and never get tired or have a loss of accuracy with their aim. In other games with stamina systems and reticles with increased/decreased accuracy based on movement. Of course this wouldn't affect close range guns much like the shotgun which is why it's a great tactic to drop some for squad leaders.

PS: Why don't marines in pubs use SSTP anymore?

    Good call!

TGNS runs HLTV proxies on both servers, and we "bump" people there, instead of "kicking" them, when they're removed due to slots or AFK. Granted, people generally want to play more than watch, but it's not uncommon for players to join at the end of a game, explaining that later, when slots opened again, they chose to /remain/ on the HLTV they'd been forced to

3.2 HLTV is VERY entertaining to watch, especially if you're watching a game full of players who know how to work together. and even moreso if you have the voicecomms of both teams at the same time (as our proxies do). If you want to check out our proxies, which often stream 8v8 games in the evenings (as our server(s) are full), check out the following addresses.

If the voices are garbled to you, it's because your client hasn't loaded the Speex codec yet. You can solve this several ways, including joining the server first. Both of our servers offer a simple console command for joining their associated proxies automatically: 'joinhltv'. So, if the server isn't full, but you just want to watch some great HLTV, connect to the server and issue the 'joinhltv' command.

    TGNS #1 (server / proxy): tgns.tacticalgamer.com:27015 / tgns.tacticalgamer.com:27020
    TGNS #2 (server / proxy): 74.52.157.235:27015 / 74.52.157.235:27020

( we really do need to hook a hostname into that second box )

YES i accept the lerk has been nerfed. My point was that this was not an unreasonable adjustment given how little res a lerk costs and its role in gameplay. My impression at least is that the lerk was intended to be a support class species NOT a full fledged assault species, that is a role taken by the onos and fade.

Lerks literally give other species cover with umbra, reduce the armour of marines for the benefit ot attacking aliens or screams to make other aliens better fighters. Sure every now and then lerks can assume an assault role if the oppurtunity arises, but, unless playing combat, Imho lerks were always intended to support higher lifeforms and be an all round nuissance to marines. In its old form players that mastered the skill curve could prove to be more than just a nuissance, but primary threat to squads of marines. Used properlly they were difficult to hit. And ive only noticed the lerk changes to be slight personally. Really Imo if u were awesome with the lerk before you should still be awesome with it, just not to ridiculous extent.

And to those who say the new fade is worse i beg to differ. once you get used to it (and its something we've been doing since 1.04 might i add) you might find that ure actually a better fade. +movement makes combat manouvres seem more natural and the so called "nerf" simply caters for this, otherwise i would contend fades would be way to good.

lerks are the lowest lifeforms bar the skulk and gorge, they should be a nuissance and a headache for the marines not an absolute nightmare (that role is reserved for fades and oni)

and btw onos have more health as well (900 i think) not just continuos charge.

the hltv fix was long overdue, although i was saddened that it put me out of commentating games (seeing specs can see it all now themselves). as for the fade, it's not really that nerfed: just different. i like how the new fade is less dependent on mc's - i used to adren fade but with 3.2 you can do almost the same w/o the upgrade (or atleast have enough maneuverability to survive well with out an mc upgrade).
  • BacillusBacillus Join Date: 2006-11-02 Member: 58241Members
I recall bugstah saying that the 3.1 lerk was fun for a while, but it got boring to pancake and hope the hitbox isn't where its supposed to be. I somehow agree since with my bad connection even skulking gets often boring because you can never tell if you did good dodging or if you just tanked the marine out. I've never lerked that much, but the 3.2 lerk feels agile enough to me.

The games I play marines aren't overpowering aliens out. Change the serversize and skill level around and you can call almost anything overpowered.
