Bad Lag Spikes

<div class="IPBDescription">In game, at the worst times</div>Hey all,

I've been playing NS for god knows how long now, granted there have been long breaks from it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Got into DoD, CS 1.6, Sven Coop....then when HL2 came out, well I forgot all about NS...playing CSS, Plan of Attack, DoDS...

Anyways I started off playing NS on a 500mhz AMD K6-3 Computer, with 64meg of Video, 192 meg of ram (PC133) and a 256k Connection.
Never had any kinds of problems, and definitely not the one I'm encountering now.

Now I run a 1.9ghz AMD 2800+ Sempron, 768 meg of ram (PC2700), 256 MSI 9550, and a 3meg Connection (only 256upload though)
and now I am having horrible lag spikes.

It seems to only happen in a "battle"
When I go to sneak on a marine, and he turns around to fire his shotty in my face, or visa versa and I'm firing that shotty, it lags up, and the next thing I see is me on the other side of the score dead.

Basically when there activity going on.

I have net_graph 2 enabled, and anytime I go to attack, or get attacked, it lags, the chart spikes way up.

Though I connect to a good server with a ping of 40-60 on average.
Doesn't seem to matter though, because I can connect to on running lots of plug ins at 150 and play fine, till we get attacked or I attack

I've tried several options already. I noticed my FPS would range any where from 25 to 72 fps.
So it wasn't jumping around so much, I limited it to 50, which is fine for me.
But still no luck

I read around and tweaked some other settings, but still get these lag spikes...
here's what I have tweaked.

Rate: 15000
cl_cmdrate: 100
cl_updaterate: 40
fps_max 50
fps_modem 0.0
cl_lc: 0
cl_lw: 1
sv_unlag: 1
sv_maxunlag 0.5

Running the game in;
OpenGL
1280x1024 (Same res as desktop)
32 bit Color

Doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me that I played on a computer 1/4 of what I'm running now, yet now I encounter problems.
None of my other games have this problem, not even a 32 player game of CSS.

Also, not sure if its do to the lag spikes, but I seem to get a lot of mouse and keyboard lag randomly
at first I thought it was because my batteries were dying or a bad connection to the receiver
but that didn't do anything, so it had to be the game.

Anyone know what could be wrong, have a simple solution for me?

Thanks much

Oh yeah, one more off related thing...
Is there any way for me to have it, so when I move my scroll on my mouse down it goes down with the weapon lists? Seems only my MOUSEUP works, and when I move it down, it quick switches instead (though the option is not enabled)

I have similar problems. I have a fast connection and I occassionally get loss and choke, usually at inopportune times. My choke is always in single digits, my loss is sometimes up in the twenties.

Just had my cable modem replaced.
Connection was at 300kbs and the connection was always dropping.

Now that I have a new one, I'm back to my 3meg connection, but I'm still getting these lag spikes :\

    anybody know anything yet?

Input (keyboard & mouse) lagging problems are common to HL based games since release of October update (especially for ati card users). You have radeon 9550, don't you? You can fix that lags (input, dunno if that fix those "spikes") by setting low priority to hl.exe in process manager or by disabling ATI HotKey Poller process (ati2evxx.exe in services.msc).

if your computer is fine, your connection is physicly fine, your modem is fine, then you might wanna try a inbetween node like a router. It gets most of the beating and can for some ppl mean the difference between hours of offline time or no probs at all.

Same problem for me, infact, this happens on all 3 of my computers, all with varying specs and strenghts. It's nothing frame-related at all, I actually have strong frames in combat, it's the net lag that turns into a problem on high active moments.

What exactly happens is that as soon as I get too many entities fighting in the same room my ping jumps ultra high. When I usually have a ping of 29 it jumps to 300-600 but acts like 2000+. I freeze, players freeze, buildings get stuck under a repetitive animation, and people teleport each 2 seconds or so, for up to 5 seconds and the fighting continues as normal/intended.

This is severely hampering my fighting capability when things just teleport around you and you're unable to dodge things at your pace.

It's obviously a ping issue, as soon as too much information is sent/recieved the net starts crashing down, and it's happening on all three of my computers. All 3 of them are connected under one internet branch, but this is moot considering this happens even when the other 2 are disconnected and shutdown. I have a DSL connection that happens to be pretty fast, is there any way I can increase my sending/recieving info? I'm almost positive that it's under a bottleneck, and considering some players aren't having this problem there must be a solution.
