<div class="IPBDescription">Job hunting, wee!</div>So, I have been working at a local movie theater for nearly 2 years now, it sucks, and pays minimum wage. I'm not allowed to do anything, including schoolwork, when business is slow (I work in the box office, so this would be feasible). I'm not getting enough hours. I get less than 20 hours a week. I need money, so this arrangement really sucks.

I don't have a car, I take the bus everywhere, so that makes finding work difficult.

Anyway, what are things that you who are in school do for work? And to those of you who are out of school, what did you do?

you live in the city or the suburbs? in the burbs, it seems like you can't throw a rock without hitting a service industry job... but getting around without a car = not fun =d can't offer much advice other than watch for Help Wanted signs... if your school has a career services office or website, try that =p

Buy a lawnmower, service your neighbors yards for a decent price, save your money, buy a car, drive into town and get a job at the grocery store as a bagboy... <img src="http://www.ibparcade.com/style_emoticons/default/bag.gif" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

Are you in College? If so seriously check with your school for jobs.

if you are in HS, well, stock clerk.

You could always work at a local gorcery store or someother store. I'm sure there is a store somewhere nearby that needs a worker.

Lots of colleges have sites or some palce to find postings about jobs.. Mine does so I looked there and got a pretty decent $10/h job about 10 minutes away from my school, where I fix/refurbish commercial coffee machines <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Decent part time gig 15-18 hours a week, couple hours a day. You just gotta keep looking around for a while.. it took me a good couple of months to find my job O_O.

So yes, your college should have something out there along those lines, wait, unless you're in high school, then that might be a bit harder... If not then craigslist has some good postings for random stuff..

If all else fails, go... rob some banks?

Yea, I'm in college. I'll look around, I dunno if my school has much in the job department. I'll look. And everything on Craig's' List looks like some sort of scam. People name jobs oddly.

Well what type of school do you go to? I go to a really large research school and got a job as a lab assistant. All labs need people to do support work so you do that some of the time and then just hang out and talk to really smart people for the rest of the work day. Also at least in my lab the hours are super flexable. Most of the grad students don't even come in until 10. The only two problems are the pay and the fact that if you don''t enjoy science your going to hate your job. Other than that its great spot for an undergrad.

yeah, definitely look for a school job if you're in college. They will almost always pay well above minimum wage, unless your school is really cheap. Try to get a job somewhere that is quiet and unpopulated, like a library. I currently work in a residence hall computer lab. I get payed US$8.75 an hour to basically watch over a computer lab and wait for people to have computer problems. Since i work a late shift, there's barely anyone in here <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

...so i joist loiter on these forums or study...

Residence hall computer lab? My school doesn't have one of those, but there's so many computer labs on campus that it isn't needed.

When I first started college, I worked at the front desk for the dorms on campus. I also lived in the dorms, so it worked out nicely. It was about 10 hours per week, so you would probably be doing it in addition to working at the theater or something. On the plus side, there wasn't usually that much to do (except for the 40 minutes of sorting mail during the day), so it was easy to do homework during your shift, or waste time online.

I got my current job without even looking for it. I was a TA for a lab for a couple of years, simply because I enjoyed doing it. As people that were around for longer than me left, I was asked if I wanted to take over doing paid stuff, which actually covered two different positions (one is maintaining the lab by mixing up chemicals, keeping other supplies stocked and stuff, I don't do that anymore because it was boring; the other is running the open lab time on Saturdays, where I get to help people building their projects for the class).

During a few of the summers I worked in the bakery at Albertsons. The union there actually requires that people get at least 24 hours per week, which in your case seems like it would be a good thing.
