gather 'round the campfire....
Played a roughly 2hr game this afternoon, as marines, on nancy, 9v9 or there abouts.
We totally shut down the skulk rush, get our base up, grab the first node, and off to messhall. Skulks are pestering us the whole time, we finally secure mess after a few close calls (TF was up and down like a rabbit), and go off to grab mother interface. Aliens already had it, but it was loosely defended and we grabbed it. So were off securing that, fending off attacks on mess and mother from skulks and fades for quite a while.
Then we see a kill by xenocide. Cries of 'GG' and 'here come the Onos' fly in, 1 marine quit right away. Our commander kept cool though, and slapped down 3 seige cannons in the corner of mother interface, closest to subspace hive. Down went hive 3. Fades started pouring in, trying to break us out of mother, but we just barely held it. I never saw an Onos, i think we got hive 3 down before any could evolve. I was able to kill off about 3 fades by charging them in the hallway from subspace to mother, all 3 were pistol kills. At this time we had just gotten HMG/HA, but were low on resources so only about 1/2 the team had them. Almost their entire team was fades, and they were putting big pressure on messhall, trying to get another route into mother. Messhall goes down, and now we're getting attacked at mother from all sides. luckily we have a phase gate so our reinforcements dont have any trouble. Finally we get a well outfitted team of HA/HMG/GL to block off the fade access to messhall (and thereby mother), and we resecure mess.
Now we start trying to clear the aliens nodes. Commander calls for groups of 3, and miraculously, the marines listen. We start pushing through alien territory (keep in mind they controlled ALL of the map save messhall, brige, subspace and mother). Groups of 3-4 fades keep trying to break through, and do a fine job of it, forcing us to fall back and reinforce what territory we have. Eventually we start pushing back their DC/OC groups with seiges, which slows down the fades ability to hit and run, allowing me another couple of pistol kills.
Finally we start moving out 2 squads of 4 to clear the aliens, and we push them out of one hive, and then the last one goes down easy.
Things to learn from this battle:
1) Skulk rush is easy to beat if you have one person tell the team when the skulks are coming so they can all stop building and start shooting.
2) Pistols deal 200 damage with perfect accuracy faster than you can say "pistols deal 200 damage with perfect accuracy"
3) When marines stick together, their power increases tremendously.
4) A good commander is critical to the success of the Marines.
5) Seige cannons are your best friend
6) Marines can win even if the third hive goes up.
7) HA are NOT necessarily the best things for killing fades. The vast majority of my fade kills this game were with NO HA, and me using A PISTOL (1 was with shotgun, 1 with hmg). HA makes you too slow to give chase, and chasing is how you kill fades.
8) when the marines dont sit around in base asking for HA/HMG, and instead go out and DO something, the marines do alot better.
Incidentally, i saw the permacloak bug in action on a fade (happened when we took out hive 3), but thankfully it was only L2, so atleast we could kinda see it as it ran around hacking us to pieces with its ghost claws.

2)I played a game that lasted 5 hours, hey it was a weekend, heh. Anyways it was such a good game constant battles and this truely showed that a good team of marines, and a good team of aliens can prove that this game is ballanced. It was aliens with 3 hives and marines with half the nodes of the level with HMG, HA, GREN, and a kick **obscenity** marine team vs. ONOS and Fade and lerk and the game would never end... It came real close when we rushed the marine base and then the marines started building seiges in the vents and the vents lead to just about everywhere and it started destroying our two hives and one hive was down... so we had to rely on the skulks and lerks to rush in their get the seiges while the fades defend the other 2 hives and try and help the gorges set up a defence against the 3rd hive... Finally when hope was lost for the marines they had a recon squad of HA and HMG and we had many of our defences down at all our 3 hives because we could barely even keep the hive itself alive so we had no time to build defences it was mainly people who had to defend and when we had the 3 hives back we rushed with onos and the entire time the marines killed all three of our hives... and the game was down to this...
1.All marine defences and nodes are down... and we are rushing their base while they have some turrets down...
2.Marines are trying to get us out of their base and kill us...
3. some gorges were waiting to see if any of the marines left the hive posts so they can build the hive back up.
It came out that the marines won... they left the hive posts and they went back to base killed the ONOS and fades.. many Fades turned into skulks and ambushed many of the lonely marines heading back to base and many failed but we got one squad down and the gorges were almost at 80 ready to buil hives back but our onos died and one marine spawn portal was left wth armory and no defence... and it was down to the lerks and teh gorges... lerks were pretty much pointless since all they had was their bite but soon the gorges would get their needles back and the gorges would morph into skulks... but the marines killed the remaining gorges destroyed the consturction of the hive and killed the lerks....
I played a similar game with a faster pace.. we had Mother Interface within 10 minutes of starting the game. The commander kept us moving from nozzle to nozzle, placing resource towers and minimal turret coverage. RP's flowed in fast. We fortified at Mother.. phase gate, armory, lots of turrets, all the goodies.. and then took the nearby hive. While it was dying, a few stray marines finished constructing more dependable defenses at the Mess Hall and other nozzles. Once that was done, we then moved on the second hive and.. well.. cleaned things up.
And the alien rush is deadly on a large game. I played a game with 10 skulks rushing the base, decimating marines in a frenzy of teeth, and killing us before we even got a portal up. The next game, we had a portal up, but there were still so many skulks that they killed anyone who spawned until they destroyed the portal completely. :/
