Art Request for game
<div class="IPBDescription">game for class - 75% done, need art</div>I'm taking a class in game development right now and my team is about 75% done with the code, but our team consists of 5 programmers and no artists so we've been using placeholder art. We are approaching the end of the quarter so I'm looking for art to use or an artist to work with. I asked around on #naturalselection and someone suggested I post here.
Website: <a href="http://wombat.raydenuni.com/" target="_blank">Wombat</a> (not real user friendly, it's being used for development but you an browse the design docs)
Here is an image of our current graphics: <a href="http://blog.raydenuni.com/2007/4/30/wombat-teaser/" target="_blank">teaser</a>
<img src="http://raydenuni.com/gallery2/d/6487-1/flames1.png" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />
Here is what we are looking for:
Someone who can create a small number of character sprites. It is a top down 2D shooter, similar to Alien Swarm or Stick Arena. We mostly need a sprite for the player (top down) and sprites for enemies. We currently have a halfway decent tile set for the map and weapons although we would not be opposed to improvements here.
<a href="http://www.garagegames.com/blogs/44904/10283" target="_blank">This</a> should give you an idea of the sort of graphics we are looking for.
What we can offer:
I wish we had a budget, but this is a class project. Our team is very serious about the project and expect to have something playable in three weeks. By creating art for us you will get to work with a team of enthusiastic college students and get your name in the credits.
That's all. If anyone is interested: respond here or find me on #naturalselection.

Anyhoo, depending on the requirements I might be interested in doing this, something that can add to my portfolio and its summer break anyway. Also interested in game development but I'll probably be going for the art side of the equation.
ZeroByte as I am not an artist and I have never made a game like this, I don't know for sure what we need. My thoughts on the matter are that on a minimum we would need:
The player character needs new art. It is a top down view, so the sprites would have to be top down or maybe isometric (Smash TV). Ideally a series of walking animations that could be rotated programmatically.
Art for at least two enemy types, similar technical requirements but can be lower quality.
As far as poses, it's all top down so it's kind of weird. Standing, walking, attacking (melee, range), getting hit, dying.
Stuff that would also be useful, but not necessary include images of weapons for the interface, general GUI, bullets (although we have a bunch of OS images for this), new map tile set images if you are feeling ambitious. Something else useful would be making doodads to place on the map (rocks, trees, etc).
Resolution should be at least 48x48, each tile currently is 48x48.
ZeroByte, if you are at all interested let me know and we can talk some more over IRC or AIM. We have 3 weeks left in the quarter and still have a bit to implement, but we're working hard and getting things done. Should be an exciting time to join.
In all honesty I don't think you can expect that much from non-compensatory work. That's not to say that people don't want to help (i.e I would be able to do something) but I would find it unlikely that you would have that grade of work within your deadline - unless said volunteer treated it like a part time job.
If you're willing to drop the quality level enough I'm sure you'd get some help - but really since it's your game you need to be more specific with the art direction.
You might want to summarize the game a bit better since I don't really want to go and read your site. That's probably me just being lazy though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
First to address the idea of cheating. I am a computer science student and this is a computer science course in game development. My team consists of five programmers. There are no art majors at my school. This means our options are: make our own crappy art, find some for free (what I did with the map tileset), or find someone who would be willing to work with us.

I don't care if you're cheating as long as you acknowledge it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> If better artwork gets you a better grade, but you didn't do the your own artwork, it's cheating.
the "expected" artwork quality level would require a lot of work. It looks like they might have even done models which must be mapped and textured and then once animations are done - converted into images.

Maybe I misrepresented. The link I gave as an example is the general idea of what we want, not a standard. We aren't expecting similar quality to a professionally developed art pack from someone in 3 weeks. All we want is something better than what we currently have, which is a stupid little knight.
If you are interested in helping, let's talk. I will take what I can get.
As for a basic summary: Smash TV. It is a top down 2D shooter. We have a variety of weapons planned and a few different enemies. We are also implementing a separate magic system that should prove interesting. Originally we had planned multiplayer but due to time constraints we have decided to scrap that.
6 posts since 2004. You have remarkable restraint.

It's true. I don't post here often. I spend a lot of time on IRC in #naturalselection and #lunixmonster.
Not really, it's like using stock images.... created especially for the game.

Twisting the facts into an almost justifiable explanation..... You'd make a fantastic politician <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I have seen you so often on IRC that I was really confuzled when I saw you only had 4 posts <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Same deal with me. I get all my Natural Selection community stuff confused.
