bad management over the years are geting worst
I am currently doing a contract at IBM for a consulting agency. I have changed floor since March and I have heard several rumours about IBM doing/wanting layoffs. This week, 600 employees were layed off in Canada and 1305 in the US. Rumours have it that in June, we should expect an even bigger wave. The ambiance where I am working is having a paranoya smell. Everyone is looking for other job openings because they are simply scared of what might happen ine next few months.

Well on Friday, someone found an article on PBS which is having the same effect as throwing oil on a fire. The link below speculates that IBM as a company, might simply cease to exist by the end of the year because of bad management decisions.

http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/2007/pu...504_002027.html

My current contract is due to end in early July. Normally it should get renewed but now I am having serious doughts. The market has became extreamly difficult in my profession over the past 12 months. At this point all those rumours are just speculations but from I am hearing from my co-workers, some truth might be in it.

Uh, I really, really, really doubt it. IBM is a massive company, in fact, they are one of, if not the, largest and most profitable technology company in the world . Last year they made almost 10 billion in profit, up 18% from the 05 fiscal year. They have a ton of subsidiaries to keep them afloat, and their BlueGene project will pretty much ensure them to have business for.. years.

They have something over 350,000 employees, the 2000 they fired is barely a scratch, and were all in the American market, which is in a pretty awful state for them at the moment. Your job might be in trouble, but the company itself is fine, hell, theyve even hired more people in the last year than they fired so far.

Things I learned from /.: Robert X. Cringely is an idiot. Best to ignore any article by him, although IBM laying off a lot of employees sounds true from other sources.

Best sales strategy evar. Release crappy system after crappy system, tell the people. the new crappy system is not as crappy as the previous one, everyone will get it. Release a decent system (XP) and then something that is even more decender..... and... well.. why switch?
