Trouble creating a game.

<div class="IPBDescription">Behind firewall; always comes out local address!</div>I've just recently installed NS 3.2 and have started playing again, and have brought a friend to play the game with. However, whenever I tried to make a game using Create Game, and making sure the LAN server box is ticked off, it always creates it with the following local address: 192.168.2.2. My local address on my computer is 192.168.1.2.

I forwarded the following ports in my router: 1200, 27015-27016, and 27020 to 27040, forwarded to 192.168.1.2, and still have this problem.

If any help can be given, it would be greatly appreciated.

What's your gateway IP? And while at it, what is your router, specifically? Does it allow for port forwarding? Newer high-end D-Link routers always have great firmware to support this kind of thing. You seem to have the right port numbers for UDP, what do you have open for TCP? (the Steam Half-Life engine requires TCP ports 6003 and 7002 to be open as well)

I can run a NS server or any server for that matter behind my router provided I know which ports to open, so take it from me I can be done.

Btw, do you have the lame Windows Firewall turned on? Turn it off, really, you don't need it. And check your Anti-Virus suites or Zone Alarm, some of those could require you to enter port #'s or be disabled as well.

    Gateway IP is 192.168.1.1

Yeah, I opened those ports and reset Steam as well. Still nothing.

Every time it starts up, it always says starting local game too. I've made sure sv_lan was set to 0, that the LAN box was ticked off, and that the region was set.

I also have no other firewalls running.

Find out what your IP address is, not your router's address. Try <a href="http://www.whatismyip.com" target="_blank">this site.</a> Then start your server and see if you can add that address as a favorite server in Steam under the servers tab. If you can, you should see the server and yourself on it. This means it is working and you just need to give the IP address to your friend.

I've just tried that as well; no luck.

Then the ports are not open. Check what your computer's address is: start-->run-->cmd, then ipconfig and see the IP address there. Make sure it matches the address you forwarded the ports to.

Is it possible to try running a server without a router to see if it is at fault?

It appears the router is at fault, though in what way I don't yet know why.

I've forwarded all the necessary ports, and I know they should work as ports forwarded on the very same IP address work for every other game I have.

Maybe it's a problem beyond the ports? I'm running a Linksys router, if that helps.

Ugh... Linksys is notoriously limited on firmware controls in almost all of their models. Not that's the problem necessarily, but I've heard way too many similar complaints. Try a D-Link DIR-655, it's the next gen of what I have (the D-Link DGL-4300 Gamer Lounge), the firmware is VERY easy to get quite advanced with if needed and has QoS packet priorities, definitely awesome at reducing LAN latencies when you're gamming. Application QoS FTW! (it's also a 802.11n router with gigabit wired built in to boot) You can pick one up at Best Buy easily enough. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Can you tell me which specific router model it is? We need to know to help you. But to be honest, if you tell me it's a WRT54G or WRT54GS I'm going to slap you for being cheap. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> Basic models are basic, meaning they leave out "advanced" stuff that in applications like this you need.

Here's a screenshot of my router's gaming settings on my machine which I <i>can</i> host a NS server on.

It IS a WRT54G, and I've always hated it.

    Commence the slapping.

Get a screenshot of the ports that you forwarded on your router settings.

Meh don't bother Sarisel, that router has <i>really</i> basic settings. At least you can WPA2 secure it, through the wizard...

I was just dealing with a Linksys router and storage link today with a $190 linksys router that honestly had crappy ###### firmware controls. I honestly am beginning to think the controls are just "there" on some linksys models and don't affect anything. I replaced that system with the DIR-655; and what do you know? *gasp* Everything works! Linksys used to have much better products than they do nowdays.

Adelus, upgrade your router. I sent you a PM.

I have a linksys myself, but it is from the befsru31 line. Although I can't say that the firmware is anything advanced, I only had to forward one port to host a HL server, so I'm wondering if maybe the forwarding done was not correct for Adelus.

I have to ask, just to make sure:

sv_lan sometimes defaults to 0, make sure it is 1.

Go to <a href="http://whatismyip.com" target="_blank">whatismyip.com</a> to find your external ip adress.

Then open up your listenserver.cfg and add the line
    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->ip x.x.x.x<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
and replace x.x.x.x with your external IP adress.

Except that unless he has a static IP he'd have to change that everytime his IP lease expires, Notaplayer. Even then I think he indicated he tried that already.
