Onos Design

<div class="IPBDescription">A little change me up</div>We all love the Onos, yes? Hell yes. BUT I was thinking for NS2 if he could have less of elephant feet and something more like claws? It's just silly seeing a giant elephant like creature suddenly get raised in the air when climbing a ladder. Not to mention jumping. For some reason it just doesn't fit when you look at it. But if he had something closer to a hand you could actually have an animation of him going up and down ladders. Rather than him just standing still and being raised up. Just a thought.

yes i think more like a giant grizzle wolf type thing would be better also

Well after thinking of other Valve Source games I realized that not even humans had animations for climbing ladders. So maybe the animation is too much. BUT it's still silly the idea of a giant elephant like creature climbing stairs.

perhaps in ns2 onos' can't climb ladders, and its the mappers choices to restrict their paths - buy having ladders in some places and ramps in others

Not a good idea. Perfect for exploits.

    Marine: Oh no, an onos!
    Onos: Roar.
Marine: Oh, phew, a ladder! I'll just go halfway up and gun the onos down.

The giant wolf thing would be kinda cool, but perhaps that could just be a new form. The onos plays its role out nicely as is.

I think you've got a point perhaps a creature with a lower center of gravity and more spread out, and with as you said claws for feet. Perhaps you could then give the onos a gimped form of wall walk, where it can very slowly climb up any surface but theres a little bar which tells how long you can stay up there (so that an onos doesn't sit on the roof of a room like triad and drop on the rines <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> (though that might actually be pretty ace D: )

i agree with schkorpio on this one. at the moment ladders are an onos's worst enemy, and currently theres plenty of places that are not really suitable for an onos, people know it and just alter their paths around it. look at sewer in ns_caged for example. if people are already getting used to detouring around places that arent onos friendly, why not just make the maps reflect this. as long as all 3 hives, marine start and double res are accessable to onos, and the paths inbetween, there shouldnt be any problems.

even if they fix having an onos get stuck on a ladder, it will still look silly climbing up one. and the onos feet at the moment suit it perfectly, claws would just look wrong. if the onos had paws/claws it wouldnt stomp, it would slap.

Here's an idea for the onos - and perhaps other creatures as well - that occured to me when I was looking at the monorail meets onos pic in a blog lately:

    Location Specific Carapace.

Given the look of the Onos, I always thought that it looked like it could take a huge amount of punishment in the front. What if you made the head and back practically a shield, but the belly or hind quarters were more vulnerable?

Just an idea, something for a bit of variety in tactics and strategy for NS2.

what about a running jump required for onos to navigate ladder? make him a bullet and if he lands on the person on the ladder boom splat hehe

i dont think there are any ladders in NS that an onos could jump over, and it would look a bit rediculous if it could jump twice its height...

in relation to a HMG'er perched half way up a ladder, you can always try to jump and digest him, if that fails run away!

I think since the maps are going to be community made, yea BAD IDEA. Un-experienced map makers will make life hell for onos. I see the onos as a huge amount of flesh like a rhino pushing everything out of the way. The way the feet are, could be changed i guess but need to be thick because of it's size, climbing ladders is a good idea, maybe slow? Unless every mapper put in paths for onos. This should be more of their choice and they tell the mappers it's a guideline of having a map. Don't want to make the onos like the para in cs <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

If an onos can't climb a ladder to kill what's attacking it, what's the use?

    <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tiny.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::onos::" border="0" alt="tiny.gif" /> - Rawr, I'll get you after taking a giant detour! Stay there, would ya? I don't want you to attack what I'm guarding.

Perhaps an onos could climb up small ladders by getting a running start, and perhaps medium-sized ladders if he uses charge? It would be like running up a small wall. If he doesn't make it, he falls back down. That sounds more fair to me, and long ladders would still keep an onos down below, forcing him to find another path.

something like that sounds neat, or make special ladders for mapping that they can n can't climb, that way if it's a main path they can use it, if it's a crows nest he can't.

Pretty much with Onos vs Marine its "Give me a jetpack so i can camp on top of that vent or something." You know those spikes <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tiny.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::onos::" border="0" alt="tiny.gif" /> at the top of onos's head, kinda looks like the onos's hair, maybe make it so they can grab marines.

    Overpowering, I would think.

Actually, it wouldn't be overpowering. Ever heard of devour? it would be like that but it wouldn't hurt people.

yeah, but you could grab the marine from a higher unreachable spot, pull him down to the ground, stomp him if he didnt have a jetpack, and then digest him.

i think it could be feasable if the dreadlock thingys could grab the marine and restrict their movement, but the marine can still fire his weapon at the onos. that way at least the marine could fight back, unlike stomp.

but combined with stomp and devour, this could make the onos a bit overpowered. and i dont want to lose devour just to get silly tenticles! if anything replace stomp with it...

Few years ago, Onos could paralyse any marine in a line of sight of the onos, just like parasite for skulks. Paralyse could shoot down jetpackers and kill them. Heck, jetpackers even took fall damage then. But back then Onos neither had stomp or devour, and had primal scream as fourth ability.

Onos is better today though, IMHO.

I think that the tentacle is a good idea. It's basically an improved accuracy but no splash damage stomp. As long as the tentacle doesn't effect a JP, I think it would be a nice change because it shouldn't affect balance too much.
