I want to try some of these Half life 2 mods coming out but I dont know which one to try first. Are there any good ones that are a must play? Im looking for multi player mods but if there is a good single player mod ill try them to.

only one that really kept me interested for any length of time was <a href="http://www.empiresmod.com/" target="_blank">Empires</a>. FPS/RTS hybrid. vehicles. Classes. Lots of stuff.
<a href="http://www.sourcefortsmod.com/" target="_blank">Source forts</a> is rather awsome, but I always got turned off rather quickly because of grieffers.
I don't know if either game actualy has peopel palying currently, but it is worth a look.

Looks like ZM is the one with the most players....
hmmm, those stats sem a bit off. CS and CS source add up to >9billion player Mins/month. Yet the total is about 8.4Billion PM/M

Assuming you're looking for multi-player games, <a href="http://www.eternal-silence.net/" target="_blank">Eternal Silence</a> and <a href="http://www.dystopia-game.com/" target="_blank">Dystopia</a> seem to be the two most polished HL2 total conversions.

The Source mod scene is a joke. The only good thing to come out of it is <a href="http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/index.shtml" target="_blank">Minerva</a>, and that's not even a real mod.

Minerva, Hidden & Dystopia would definitely be my top 3. Hidden is great fun, especially with a group you know on comms. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Rock 24 was a awesome SP mod. It's close to the original game play (IIRC before gordon came to C17, or somewhere between the main story) with AI teammates following your whole way through it, great voice acting, great map design and a few physics tricks hl2 hasn't already exploited. Short-ish though.
Mistake of Pythagoras (SP) had me really amazed. You start in some weird world with gigantic letters falling down but the environment looks like C17. There are huge constructs to fight and quite a lot of puzzles with MANY strange tricks and hacks with the physics (one is really massive <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />) all while following some crazed story.
I'm too lazy to find a link but zombie master is good one player controls zombies rts and the rrest have to find parts to escape and sruvive pretty fun. still in beta though.
Zombie Master can be fun at times when you aren't playing with 12yr old kiddies and teamwork seems non existent. Theres also basic commanding, in rts style.
Surprised no-one's mentioned Pirates, Knights and Vikings II. The gameplay is so simple that they've managed to work a lot more on the style of the mod (including some Pythonesque humour). It's not deep, but it has no pretenses and does what it sets out to do quite well imo.
Source Forts is apparently thoroughly enjoyable, another one of these mods who don't try to create a total conversion, just take simple gameplay and tweak it continually.
I hear a massive repolish of Iron Grip is around the corner, but most of what I've heard is artwork and not the gameplay design.
Insurgency <i>looks</i> excellent, I just hope they have enough to make them stand apart from other realism shooters, it'd be a damn shame to see that all go to waste. It's almost a catch-22 situation with this one: either they'll have played it too easy and won't differentiate themselves enough from similar games, or they will have tried to do too much and it won't be fun to play. I will be eager to see how it plays though, just in case they've hit a sweet spot.
Eternal Silence... pretty much what Tycho said. If they address the fact you spend 30 seconds getting to an objective and take on average 2 seconds to die (assuming you don't get blown out of the skies on the way), then it'd have the potential to be the best multiplayer on Source.
Insects Infestation is worth a look.
Of all mods The Hidden and Dystopia held my attention for longest. The Hidden falls down because playing as Marines isn't fun enough, there needs to be more depth. Dystopia fails because the map design is too static, pretty much ALL of the combat is focused around set chokepoints in the map (think Dustbowl for Team Fortress, but instead of it being a one-off map, it's almost all of them). That and the reinforcement waves are way too long.
Pity Hull Breach has disappeared of the radar. One other one worth keeping an eye on is Neotokyo. Then there's Off-Limits, Caliber, Nightwatch.

Firearms was fun, I enjoyed it more than DoD personally.
Though, Firearms source is made from different devs than the original devs of Firearms right? And some of the developers of Firearms is making a HL2 mod which is similar to Firearms but has a different name.
HL2 was the epic failure that made me realize gaming just isn't the same. Modding is too hard, life expectancy for games is shorter, and people move on quickly. Even CS 1.6 gets more play than CS:S.

I enjoy CS more on Source, and DoD is entirely different on each engine so you can't really compare them.
My old heavily screwed up 300mhz had a bug which removed any recoil from the garand in DoD, fun times. DoD:S I have neither been interested in or arsed to actually try, maybe because everyone says it's crap or at least worse then DoD.
It is, and so is CS:S. Infact Valve even knows this, they've put out countless "freebie weekends" for DoD:S to try and push the crap down our throats. I actually wasted the time to DL it just to play for 2 days, it made me physically sick to see what they did to DoD. I promptly uninstalled it, I wouldn't even want it if they geve it away completely free, its not worth the diskspace.

Amongst mods for source, it's one of the few the proud and the brave that acctually has decent gameplay to boast.
