    PSST, PSST: don't tell this to anybody but ESRB ratings are a huge scam, seeing gore doesn't make you more mean.

    When a marine gets gored by an onos, I think the ragdoll needs to FLY across the room and SLAM against the wall leaving a blood spatter - THAT would be awesome, and it's not too gorey, and it defiantly adds to NS's atmosphere. It also perfectly shows what an onos should be capable of. Not goreing someones arm off - that would just look dumb and get old after awhile. But an entire ragdoll, with the randomness of a ragdoll, would look pretty cool.
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Or, when a marine gets gored by an onos we could have his intestines fall out <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    and then explode covering the walls and and players in a 4 metre radius with blood. then those players leave bloody foot prints on the ground when they walk - the foot prints are actually slippery, so if they are left near a cliff or some stairs, or even ladders, then unsuspecting players will walk by and slip over and fall down, and then there intestines also fall out,explode, cover near by players in blood, who will leave bloody foot prints out for other players to slip over and have their guts fall out.

    If you think thats awesome, just imagine what will happen when a hive explodes lol

    yeah sure if its not realistic but its certainly dymanic next gen <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    I do want some degree of locational damage. When a fade gets a focus kill make him take the marine's head off. You don't have to make it squirt blood everywhere and have horrifying gurgling sounds, but just some limbs and appendages hacked, shot, or blown off would add a TON more depth to the game. Especially if it had an effect on gameplay somehow.

    HL2 blood decals are fine imo. It would be just sweet to see a marine corpse surrounded by slashes of blood on the walls after you succesfully massacred him with Fades claws. Of course the blood & the body couldnt remain there for more than a few seconds but still.

    Having read the posts, it sounds like a compromise can be achieved. NS as it is doesn't have the blood/etc that the atmosphere would make well to have- but NS2 shouldn't have so much so as to make the games feel out of place. Something in between would simply be the blood as in hl2, as suggested. Step by step. Gibs are fun, but first things first <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    There are only two times I remember seeing heavy gore actually increase atmosphere in a game.

    The first was in Aliens vs. Predator 2, with the skinned bodies up on meathooks. The second was in Quake 4.

    The meathooks only worked because of their shock value - which is lost in a deathmatch game because the same events repeat. So that wouldn't work in NS2.

    I suppose you could go for a Quake 4 "lost humanity" atmosphere if you really wanted to, but you'd risk at least partially turning off every demographic besides adolescent boys. I much prefer the "scifi horror thriller" feel that is somewhat present already in NS. I remember in Warsow you drop a ribcage when you die, like a mutilated corpse. The first time I saw it I was surprised, but after that it just looked like something out of Pacman and became another pointless (and ugly) part of the game I ended up ignoring.

    resident evil 4 has some nice gore, which does increase the atmosphere (it is a horror game after all), but just as you say Radix, in a deathmatch game it will go unnoticed after a while.

    I suppose keeping the game as close as possible to its original is a must, as your keeping the vibe of NS1. Although the game could get beat in various aspects as new games are released with funky new technology. I think the ideas NS2 are rolling with now are exellent, but adding too much to NS2 can get it abit over the top.

    What do we think of Dx10 + NS2 ?

    I -LOVE- excessive realistic violence in games, but ns likes to appeal to the younger kids. Why, i dont know, since both are being designed on a game for 18+. Its like having a day care located in a porn shop.

    Yeah ofcourse! Already the infestation seems to be comming along really well, which is why this game has alot of potential to the people who have been with it since NS1 to the newbies.. Overall technology gets more advanced over time, which people are fatally attracted too. id love to see what more advancements your adding to the game! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    And its ok if there isnt a Dx10 version, because my computer wouldn't handle it lol.

    WRONG. NS2 is being designed on the Source engine, NOT on HL2. NS2 is not a mod, it's a commercial product built on a licensed engine.

    As for gore, please see the link I posted much earlier in this thread. The devs have already told us what will be in NS2.

    I cant preach it often enough:

    Dynamic player textures and models.

    Oni can break tusks, armor can chip, marine vizors can crack. Lerks can get holes in their wings. Skulks can break teeth etc etc etc
    <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Would these factor into gameplay or just be visual effects?

    Well no, but if the engine had it's own API of something better than DirectX 10 built into it then it could run on practically any system.

    that brings back mech warrior 2,3,4 nightmares - OMG ITS A GIANT ROBOT THAT TAKES A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO ALL SIDES - ooh but blows up instantly when you shoot one of its legs off...
    I can see an onos charging out and everyone yelling, "aim for the left leg!" its furious charge, turns into a slow cowardly limp as it tries to turn around and head back to hive only to have 1/2 of the marine team run up to it and knifing it, others boosting players on top of to ride it and chanting "i need an outlet for my aggression" over and over again.

    well i'm sure it wouldnt that extreme in NS2, but consider yourselves warned <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Hahahah schkorpio, that was a nice piece of humor. BUT all scarcasm aside, i want the game to bring tension to the person playing it, i want a little fear running through their veins, instead of an unsteady Onos limping its way back to a hive getting knifed and ridden on like a horse. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    I'm personally in favor of more gore. This game as it stands can get pretty bloody and brutal at times, so with a better engine (Source) and the experience the team as had with NS, I wouldn't expect any less. I am also in favor of dynamic character models, I think what Faskalia said would definitely bring some more atomsphere into the game.

    I'm not sure how well it'd work in NS2, but the blood splatter effects you can see in the latest TF2 video look pretty fancy.
  • MasterPTGMasterPTG Join Date: 2006-11-30 Member: 58780Members
    They look Very fancy--too fancy imho, b/c imagine what that is going to do to FPS. :x.

    Even if you can turn it on/off, it's still a bit excessive and doesn't contribute a lick to gameplay. I'd much rather have greater depth and care given to gameplay and maps rather than blood/gore. Plus everyone knows that FF>TF2 anyway (except for the gibs, b/c omfg...those blood splatters were #$%#'ing amazing).

    I can accept the no gore approach (even tho I like really gory gore) but I hope the ragdoll corpses (no corpses? all source games have them!) will be interactable, as in shooting on them actually moves the body, not gibbing it or splutter with blood but at least react. Perhaps even a dead onos could act as a temporary cover?
