Talking to the school could probably get you a middle name, exact birth date, parents' names, emergency contact numbers (one of them might still be good), etc... I imagine they keep that information on file for quite a while. Making it all the easier for the tracking down.
I'd be surprised if the police couldn't find the address of someone if you had a full name and a birthdate.

C'mon, what would you feel if somebody came to you and demanded your ill-begotten ipod back? not too well I would imagine. Atleast use a nice tone when you approach him!
Well, if the phone is only worth 100$, it probably won't be high up on their list of priorities. Still, though it must be terrible to lose it JUST after you got it.
You have my sympathy- I always hate it when I lose stuff, and knowing that it's been stolen and that you'll likely never get it back is much worse.
Hehe, apparently Depot didn't read my last post <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Here's the details I promised.
The guy came in to watch a movie with two of his friends that were there on Friday with him. I contemplated whether or not to confront them about it, but I did. Told them the situation, told them about the security footage, then they fed me a complete load of bull**** about that they had just met the girl in the theater parking lot. I told them that I just wanted my phone back, and that if I were to get it soon, I wouldn't press charges. Eventually, one said that she was his "cousin's lady". Well, after that, I left them alone. They went in to their theater, I called the cops.
20 minutes later, they show up, take a statement, and I show them the footage, both of Mike walking out of his theater with a group, that included this girl. I pull Mike out of his theater, and the police ask me to step aside while they talk to him, so I go about doing my job. A few minutes later, he goes in to the theater with one of the two officers and his two friends come out with him. After some talk, one of the cops makes a phone call, to which I later found out was the father (I presume of his two friends and the girl that stole my phone). A couple minutes later, they return to the theater to finish the movie.
They called me over and told me that the girl's father was bringing the phone because she was asleep or something. they asked if I was planning on pressing charges, and I decided against it. I got my phone back, and I really don't feel like going to court over it.
So, I called the officer who I had filed the case with and left a voice mail stating that I wasn't going to press charges.
A bit later, the father of the girl came in, and said he was looking for his boys. e looked angry, like he was going to kick some ass, and he was a big guy. He didn't know what movie they were seeing, but eventually I asked if it was regarding a cell phone that he was looking for them, and he said yes. I told him it was mine, he gave it to me, and I told him what movie they were in and when it ended. He left with the last words "I'll deal with them later"
I have my phone back, it's in good condition, the battery was only 1/2 empty, and there was probably a beatdown, so justice was served, sort of, and I didn't even have to go to court.

great work man - you were much more proactive than I would have been. I have literally lost 2 or 3 cell phones in movie theaters and just took the financial hit...

This reminds me of that article/blog/venture that a guy went on to find his best friends blackberry/phone/thing because she was getting married and her sister from Russia needed to get a passport to make the wedding and all the information she needed to help to get her to the states was on that phone. The people that owned it were dumb and couldn't spell for crap and posted myspace pictures and crap using the phone. He found them confronted them and got the phone back much too late for her sister to make the wedding.
I also remember the part about the police not giving a ###### about a lost phone even though he knew exactly who had stolen it and knew their address. ###### police. Never help me when I have a problem, but they'll sure as ###### arrest you for some trivial crap.
I am glad you got your phone back and that you even had phootage of it being stolen. The best part being that the father was going to kick the kids ass. Further more, you are the manager. So ban him from your theatre. Manager's have that kind of power I know because I have been banned from the local McDonald's for 'causing a disturbance'.
Also, if the police had a name and a picture of him they are fully able to investigate the theft of your phone. If someone was murdered and all you knew what the killer's first name, what school he went to, and had security phootage of the actual murder do you think they would be like 'Do you know his address or phone number?' NO! God damned police.

Good sir, with a little bit of social engineering, anything is possible.
geez, I should take up petty theft if there's essentially no penalty...
You have my sympathy- I always hate it when I lose stuff, and knowing that it's been stolen and that you'll likely never get it back is much worse.
The phone numbers in its directory? Not.
I don't know about anyone else, but I've got several hundred numbers in mine, with no way of backing them up .
