Thansal I would suggest different ram. Only because Im not a huge fan of Kingston for overclocking(had a bad experience before, their ram may be better now but I didnt take the chance). When you overclock the CPU, you also overclock the ram so you need ram that can go over specs. Because im biased I suggest this ram <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231065" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231065</a>

Last one, a good link on what the actual deal is with the dual/quad core cpus (advantages, disadvantages, etc) I really dropped the gun on keeping up to date on these.

so, talked to my bro (who is considerably more knowledgeable about all of this then I am) about this and he made some suggestions.
My current digs look like this:
<a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813128012" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813128012</a> GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $109.99 Ditched the SLI. Was suggested by a number of other places. And I am not going to worry about splurging on P35.

might as well toss this in: Only 1 250Gig hdd? (or are there more to come?) Optical drive?
I am also unsure about that PSU.
One thing I caught my self with on my upgrade was buying a PSU with not enough of the correct connectors (it all worked out, but still).
It looks like it only has 1 SATA power output.
It does look like it has a good number of 4 pin molex hook ups, and most drives will take either (not all, one of mine did not). And you CAN convert from one to the other, but it is more money.
I did a quick (very quick) hunt around and could not find the connectors listed out for that PSU.

If you can spend the extra money, I highly recommond you get the 640MB GTS. Also get a decent cooler so you can overclock your cpu.
I'm not sure if I want to worry about overclocking. It seems like the benefit is more bragging rights than anything and I don't really want to worry about burning anything out (or take the time to tweak, reboot, test, repeat).

Well, to be honest you can be reasonably confident that you would be able to get 2.6GHz out of that CPU with almost no tweaking. Just set the FSB to 266MHz and that'd be a bout it. Maybe a minimal voltage increase. RAM is rated to 400MHz, so no worries there. Board can apparently hit 400MHz FSB, so again, should be safe, and Core 2 processors almost always do well on overclocking. But then again, it's not an absolute certainty, but it is a pretty good bet that you would be able to get a nice increase in speed.

Yes thats the one. As for overclocking, its not just bragging rights. Going from 2.0 GHZ to say 3ghz is pretty huge. Depending on what you do you will see a boost in performance. I doubt you will fry your CPU unless you push the volts beyond spec. Most of these C2Ds will overclock on stock voltage.
I switched the case to a different one that comes with an intake and outtake fan (the other case only had an intake fan) thinking that with that I might be able to get by without having to get extra case fans since the CPU comes with a fan and the gpu has a fan. I also put in a better graphics card (one with more video memory). I think I want to get this system soonish but I also want to sit on it for a few days as I do some research to make sure this will be a good build.
I wonder if this <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145590" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145590</a> CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
Might be a better replacement for this <a href="http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16820609226" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?...N82E16820609226</a> SUPER TALENT 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
Since I've never heard of super talent and seems like corsair is a brand people like. The Corsair starts more expensive but with a $30 mail in rebate comes out less than the super talent ram.

That's just IMHO. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Would it be more worth while for gaming to lower the graphics card and get a better processor or to stick with the better graphics card.
Edit 1: I probably also need a keyboard, mouse, and speakers though I'm willing for all those to be fairly cheap since for games I could use my headphones.
Edit 2: there is a combo with the case I want and a power supply from them so that would replace this power supply <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371004" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817371004</a> Antec Basiq BP500U ATX12V Version 2.01 500W Power Supply 100 - 240 V UL, CB, CE, CSA, TUV, FCC - Retail
with this <a href="http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817171013" target="_blank">http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?...N82E16817171013</a> # COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RP-600-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 600W Power Supply - Retail
The MX518 is one of my very favorite mouses and it's what I'm using right now. The G5/G7 is basically a slightly updated 518, so it all depends on whether you want to spend the extra money or not.
Latest changes. I think I will go with the corsair ram and I bumped the CPU up. It looks like it will cost me around $1100 which I guess isn't so bad though I'll still also need to spend around $50-60ish to get a keyboard and mouse but I will actually go to some stores so I can hold them before I make those purchases. I think I'll skip the speakers for now since I can use some older ones for listening to music and some somewhat nicer headphones for playing games.
Heh, pretty much like my pc, also, what size monitor do you have, and what resolution do you use to play games?
If it's anything above 1280x1024, a 640mb might be useful, if not, it's pretty much overkill. <a href="http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2007q1/geforce-8800gts-320mb/index.x?pg=10" target="_blank">8800gts 320 vs 640 (conclusion page)</a>
About the keyboard 'n mouse, that's pretty personal, I'm happy with a logitech mx518 and an old beige compaq ps/2 keyboard.
I heard the Razer Deathadder mouse and Logitech G15 keyboard are very nice.
Also, you might want to slipstream sata drivers (and all the others!) into your windows installation cd/dvd.
I dug up an old floppy disk drive and *gasp* floppies for the job, turned out the floppies were worn out. Also, the sata drivers that came with the motherboard were so crappy, they made my pc freeze/BSOD, getting the latest was nessecary.
Making an unnattended dvd with lots of drivers and apps is fun.

Only 1 250Gig hdd? (or are there more to come?)
Optical drive?
I am also unsure about that PSU.
One thing I caught my self with on my upgrade was buying a PSU with not enough of the correct connectors (it all worked out, but still).
It looks like it only has 1 SATA power output.
It does look like it has a good number of 4 pin molex hook ups, and most drives will take either (not all, one of mine did not). And you CAN convert from one to the other, but it is more money.
I did a quick (very quick) hunt around and could not find the connectors listed out for that PSU.
I'll go ahead and bump this thread. <a href="https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=4759114" target="_blank">https://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/Wishli...tNumber=4759114</a> I don't know much about hardware so most of these are suggestions Lonyo has helped me with and C3 suggested WD for the hard drives. I would likely put 32bit XP Pro on it since I doubt I'm ready to deal with Vista. Any other suggestions ?

If you can spend the extra money, I highly recommond you get the 640MB GTS. Also get a decent cooler so you can overclock your cpu.
I'm not sure if I want to worry about overclocking. It seems like the benefit is more bragging rights than anything and I don't really want to worry about burning anything out (or take the time to tweak, reboot, test, repeat).
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
If you can spend the extra money, I highly recommond you get the 640MB GTS.

SUPER TALENT 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail
Since I've never heard of super talent and seems like corsair is a brand people like. The Corsair starts more expensive but with a $30 mail in rebate comes out less than the super talent ram.

It seems like you could actually go down to a 320MB card and use the extra money on a faster processor. That's just IMHO.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Would it be more worth while for gaming to lower the graphics card and get a better processor or to stick with the better graphics card.
Edit 1:
I probably also need a keyboard, mouse, and speakers though I'm willing for all those to be fairly cheap since for games I could use my headphones.
Edit 2:
there is a combo with the case I want and a power supply from them so that would replace this power supply

# COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power RP-600-PCAR ATX from factor 12V V2.01 600W Power Supply - Retail
If it's anything above 1280x1024, a 640mb might be useful, if not, it's pretty much overkill.

About the keyboard 'n mouse, that's pretty personal, I'm happy with a logitech mx518 and an old beige compaq ps/2 keyboard.
I heard the Razer Deathadder mouse and Logitech G15 keyboard are very nice.

Also, you might want to burn the resulting image on a rewritable cd/dvd for testing.
