I turn the music down, but not off. Despite blocking out the pitter patter of skulk toes, it's all about atmosphere.
I like the interactive idea. It'd be interesting if the music changed depending on the degree of infestation, or how much action you're seeing. The key is making it fit in with the sounds that play a strategic advantage.
I played for years with the music, though that one point in that one mp3 that for some reason got louder (all dramatically and stuff) finally got to me and made me mute it.
I hope it is some sort of dynamic range music. When yer around lots of other marines, or structures it plays all normal like, but when you're by yourself, or huddled quietly sneaking around with a group of marines, the music goes softer and quieter, sort of keeping up the suspense, but not being obtrusive as you flex those ear muscles for the pitter patter of skulk toes tripping on grains of sand. Then when you get going full bore running along, the music goes back up, tempo increases, just enough to keep pace.
And it could adjust to what you're wearing too, HA or JP. ("Ride of the Valkries" as a fleet of Jet Packs blast into a hive?)
Same with aliens. Skulks sneak a lot, need quiet music. Gorges, not so much. Onii could have big heavy drum beats as they thumped along.
I like in-game music, but I usually turn it down for serious play. If there was some sort of dynamic music system, I bet most people would turn it off as you wouldn't want to be in a musical all the time. Also with dynamic music there either has to be alot of tracks or it will get very repetitive. The 5 or so ambient tracks in NS now even gets repetitive at times.
Hmmmm...Could Max be referring to a dynamic music system that ramps up when combat is tense, becomes more "jungly/alieny" when in infestation, and more "imperial" or "march-like" when in Marine controlled areas? Cuz if it is...that would be awesome!

But didn't someone else entirely make the additional music we got in 3.0 or whenever it was?

A dynamic music system would be very cool; the recent BFME2 and C&C3 RTS games have this feature (Im sure others do too) when things are relatively calm, ambient music plays, when things start to heat up, more intense music plays.

Really helps the overall feel of the game.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Hell yea!
Ghost Recon is the classic game I think of that has this feature well implemented. Hell I know many of you already play with music (I know I play a better when listening to a good song when the combat heats up and it really adds to the feel of the game). You should be able to turn it off to, but why? It helps keeps things interesting, and I know NONE of you play to get bored.
Even Dune2 had dynamic music... When somebody attacked the music got very dramatic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Yeah, several shooters have this as well. The most recent ones i can think of were GRAW 2 and Battlefield: Modern Combat for consoles.
How about <a href="http://www.joelnielsen.com/music/" target="_blank">Joel Nielson?</a> He does music for <a href="http://www.blackmesasource.com" target="_blank">Black Mesa</a>.

agreed about the theme music - would love to 6 or more players in HA walking in formation to something that sounds like "imperial march" from star wars, but perhaps a bit more military.
gorges need there own theme music two, something really cheery like when Charlie finds a golden ticket and runs all the way home....... then if the gorge dies we need one of those funny horn instruments that goes WAAP wAAAAAAAuuuuuuuUUu - kinda of like when you get a question wrong on family fued lol.
I find it funny that you think NS doesnt really have a theme Max, because I absolutly love both themes that Jeremy Soule wrote. The part from 1:18 to 1:40 in the "ambient1" song (not the march one) on the NS website is <i>the</i> NS theme. It just fits so well. Every time i hear that song again i remember the first night i played NS, on bast. The dark corridors, the humid atmosphere, the tension, the first skulk leaping at you... Once work on the soundtrack starts please, i beg you, reuse that song =/ the ns atmosphere wouldnt be the same anymore.
(ok i'm pushing it a bit.. but you get the idea <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />)
well considering i made this WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY before lord of the rings i think you can say they copied me! and not the other way around! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
it's just an example, ofc i can write more orchestral type too, but this one was really made around the theme of NS, and i think a more futuristic sounding soundtrack rather than the cliched orchestral stuff is much more suitable these days.

I think that’s got way too much of a beat for NS(2). The start is better, but sounds way too much like Lord of the Rings.
and the lord of the rings; the two towers soundtrack is a very good example btw how its meant to be. its a very good one imo
