Freezing up

Alright, I have been playing NS a long time, well over a year, and just recently my game has started freezing up completely after playing for about 30 minutes to an hour. I haven't been able to find a pattern to it, and it locks my computer up completely. I have to manually shut my computer off and back on in order for me to able able to do anything. The game lags for a moment, then the screen dims a little and then freezes, the sound cuts out and I cannot do anything, other then the manual turn off of my computer. I play on the same computer I have been playing on for months, and I haven't installed any new software/hardware or changed anything. It started to happen around the time of the latest Steam patch. Can anyone help me?

    Often this is either a memory leak bug/problem, or a virus/spyware thing. I would first scan your system with everything yuo have, and if the problem persists then notify the tech support guys and they might have yuo mail them the debug message or something like that. I had this problem before with another HL 1 mod, and it was like norv32.exe or something [a virus basically]. It crashed because what I read said after X amount of time, it fills your system memory with whatever it is doing and it overloads the system, causing it to crash! [I would think a person more clever would keep the overhead low so it would not be detected, but whomever wrote this thing didn't I guess] Anyways, I don't mean to spook you but since you say you have been lpaying for a long time and it just started... I'd run a scan with Macfee, norton, and some adaware/spybot stuff too.

    ARG, okay I ran the scan and it came up with nothing. In addition, NO other games that I play are having any problems or slowing down. If it was a virus using my memory wouldn't it effect more then just NS? I think it might have something to do with that STEAM patch, because it started at the same time as it. I am going to go check the STEAM forums and see if I can find anything there. If anyone else has any idea's please let me know.

    I'm having the same problem. It always happens when I use a quick-motion ability (blink, leap), usually into a big group of marines. If it's not a large group, there are always at least a couple marines on screen at the time. My whole computer doesn't freeze up, just the game (but I play windowed, so that might be why).

    When it happens, the hl.exe memory usage spikes up considerably--about 50 MB more than normal.. It definitely has something to do with the latest steam patch. I was in the middle of playing when steam interrupted my game and pushed the patch. The problem started happening immediately afterwards.

    --On the plus side, the server browser seems to work slightly better than when the last patch completely screwed it up.--

    EXACTLY the problem I am having, but I don't play windowed and apparently my computer won't respond to commands if I'm not. It happens when I have alot of anything on screen though, aliens or marines, but only sometimes. Let me know if you figure anything out while I go b**** at Steam tech support.

    Try to disable the "in game Steam Community" in the Steam Preferences.
    It seems that "GAMEOVERLAYUI.EXE" don't like NS.

    That was the first thing I did. Other than getting rid of the annoying overlay, it made no difference with the freezing problem.

    One more thing, the problem doesn't seem to be related to time played (except that more objects are built later in a round than in the beginning). I had it crash on me, then I rejoined the same game and experienced the same freeze up two or three times within the next fifteen minutes. Like I said before, always when leaping/blinking with a lot of stuff on screen.

    Quick Update; I just had it freeze up on me with very little on screen. It was a siege map, so there was a ton of stuff dropped and plenty of things going on not too far away, just mostly off screen.

    I've frozen up twice since disconnecting from friends, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

    This is really started to make me mad. I just crashed four times in the last ten minutes. It was on a CO map with only four to a team, so the number of people/objects doesn't seem to be an issue. The only thing common is it happens when I leap or blink.

    my NS is much worse, i have no viruses or other stuff unneccesary running and my NS completely freezes up when i click the attack key i have to press the reset button. This is a pain and i wanna play NS BADLY!.

    At the steam window, go to file and select settings. There is an option there to automatically connect to friends when STEAM starts. Deselect it. If you are already in friends, select the friends icon at the bottom and under status, choose offline. That solved the problem for me, I haven't frozen up since I stopped having friends connected at all.

    Wow... Also having this problem ... it will happen at anytime really if there is a lot of commotion but the most common time is when you go fade and try to blink it seem. This problems is really starting to **** me off! I have tried running all of my virus / spy ware checks did registry cleaning everything ... I've complete closed friends while play i have reinstalled the game nothing is seeming to help... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Ok, first someone needs to ban Sharrychrist and delete that last post/spam.

    Second, any updates on this problem? I'm bad enough at aliens without being denied use of two of the most basic abilities in the game.

    I've disabled friends, turned off the in-game steam community junk, run spyware/virus checker, etc.

    Don't know if it's related, but it froze up in the exact same way, not when I was blinking/leaping, just biting.

    Was later in the game, the server may have crashed (it was lagging), but the window never acted like that with a server crash before.

    Ok hello all,

    Id like to join you in the world of ZOMGCRASH.. I've been having this problem to. It has just happened to me as fade when blinking (not in leap as some said here yet) I moved to lerk only for the moment, was hoping that this would be fixed shortly as I've seen many people with the same problem.

    This all started happening at the Steam Community update. Disabling this as some said doesn't help, it still freezes and turns to the steam community's transparent overlay (even if disabled).

    I have read some other posts as well and I don't have any virus/spy/programs or other things running when it happens. The only thing that could be it here (for as far as my guesses go) would be
    A) WinXP Pro SP1 (not sp2)
    B) Outdated video drivers (NVIDIA GeForce 6600GT PCI Express - Is my videocard)

    So what I'd like to know is, what video card do you use?, are the drivers up to date?, are you using SP1 or SP2? or even vista..? Maybe if we cut things down on what It could be we would get closer then "PLZ FIX!"

    Did anyone try reinstall NS completely? (or even steam) shouldn't be a thing i guess because I didn't do anything weird to my install but maybe it does..
