Call of Duty 4 PC demo is soon too. This fall is really crazy, what with all the gigantic games coming out or getting close to completion. Orange Box, Halo 3, CoD4, UT3, Crysis, Hellgate, ET:QW, CoH:OF, GoW PC, Kane & Lynch, etc. Way too much to assimilate.

So, more like UT.
Their explanation for the naming stuff actually sorta makes sense. UT was the Unreal Engine, UT 2*** runs on the Unreal Engine 2, and Unreal 3 runs on the Unreal Engine 3.

I'm looking forward to get into the UT fray, with a new computer and everything <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> I played a bit of UT2K4 and I loved it, but this current computer weeps at the fps I'm getting.

i'll be blowing a good 500 dollers this fall <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Besides that, the main game i'm looking forward too is DEAD SPACE, which is gonna be released in october 2008...
And I can run it at 1680x1050 with "Default" post processing, and level 3/5 World Detail and Textures. Haven't tried higher, but it was running VERY smooth there.
Gameplay wise, it feels closer to the old UT, but it retains some of the 2k4 modes and such, but they feel much less organized. Also, the weapons seem to act differently depending on mode- the Flak Cannon's alt-fire in Deathmatch was nearly an instant kill, but in Vehicle CTF, 2 direct hits were needed(and 3 or 4 really-close shots). The sniper rifle's damage is negligible, and the Manta is INSANELY powerful as a vehicle now- with just it, I took out an entire team of 8 just by spamming fire all over. It moves so fast you can't hit it, and it can move in every direction- and the blasts kill a player in like 3 or 4 of them, and takes tanks down incredibly quick(maybe 6 seconds of fire on them?)
Also to note- it has MP and bots, but only one character model for DM, and another one for CTF(with different colors for the team). And, I couldn't join any MP games, it would say "Connecting" for a good minute or two. I think a lot of people are just hosting games off their home box, so maybe once some dedicated servers pop up it'll be fine.

How can you possibly make any gameplay determinations without having played multiplayer? That's like saying marines are hugely overpowered in NS because they can wipe out skulks being played by bots. Balance is a thousand times different in multiplayer.

When the sides are completely symmetrical, its not hard to figure out balance. And frankly, the NS bots are barely more than random direction generators compared to the UT bots. Ever since 2k3, they've been ######ing legendary in believability, up until you put them on super hard mode.
I played it, doesn't feel as 'clean' as some of the old UT's... personally, I think I preferred the pre-vehicle days... all the weapons felt different back then. now they all feel like the same weapon... it just doesn't seem to have much personality... maybe I'm just a pessimist. the levels are kinda pretty, but it suffers from the "realistic = brown" phenomenon. everything looks too gritty and rusty and therefore the same... in the old days, everything used to be colorful and high-contrast so it was easy to tell what was going on...
I share the "ugh, brown" sentiment, also the "blur = fail" sentiment. The oriental level is mostly one big blurry blob. Not cool
I played the vehicle CTF map.
This ain't your daddy's UT.
The hoverboards completely change the game for infantry. They're no longer relegated to squishy little meatbags on their way to a vehicle. Infantry can now move as fast as a scorpion, and look really cool whilst doing so. Try riding up the guy wires along the bridge and scooting down the other side into the enemy base. Bonus points if you can nick their flag and bring it back along the same route.
The hoverboard is really well done. You can get on it instantly but the moment you get hit by an enemy shot you fall off and painfully ragdoll along the ground. Once you've stopped rolling you stand up again, if someone hasn't nailed you while you were on the ground. You can also grapple onto the rear of a vehicle as it passes and coast along behind it.
All in all, I think it's pretty good. It's a departure from the 2003+ series, and it's different from the original.

Well, maximum for the demo. The max textures are only as good as they will be in the final game.
Just played the demo for a good 2 hours. Graphics are insane yet the gameplay is so smooth! I don't mind the brown grittiness that much, it looks great on the vehicles imo, even though it looks like they're rapidly disintegrating around you. The blurry distance feature is kind of annoying though: its like having cataracts at times :<
Favourite weapon so far... Minigun + "Udamage" <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> Favourite vehicle... oooh hard.. but probably the rocket-spamming Raptor <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Maybe this one has a real story again?

how am I supposed to squeeze this and the CoD4 demo and ep 2 and TF2 into this weekend?
AMD 64 X2 4200+
GeForce 7900GT 256mb

Audigy X-Fi Fatal1ty

Great continuation of the UT series.
Also: Pain.

Feels more like UT1 than UT2k3 (ut2k4 was basically ut2k3+vehicles)
