So I finally got around to beating MGS1 and 2 back-to-back.

When I was 13 I bought MGS for PSX, loved and adored it, then my second disc stopped working, never beat the game. When MGS2 came out I got a ways into it but never beat it. So I had MGS2 and 3 in my game shelf, and found Twin Snakes for GC for $20, and picked it up. Beat 1 and 2 back to back.

Why did anyone love MGS2? Wow. It ruined almost everything that was great about MGS and added all kinds of stupid supernatural crap like Vamp, Fortune, and Ocelot's new arm. Not to mention Rose. Raiden was tolerable, but Rose was horrible. The game barely had any boss battles, and even with the disgusting amount of FMV and codec calls, it only took me 11 hours with no walk-throughs used.

I might play through MGS3 even though I hate the camera in it, but at least I know it's not as retarded as MGS2. Besides, The Sorrow is cool. Maybe MGS4 will be better.

I thought this was a thread about beating a monosodiumglutamate addiction before I came in.

If you get MGS3 make sure to get Subsistance. The camera makes it easier, but playing the old way (you can actually still enable the old camera) will make you want to kill yourself. Picture the MGS2 camera, except in wide open forests, where you can't see crap, and by the time you see an enemy its too late. The new camera is the only reason I was able to do a no kill no alerts run through.

Did I mention it is also a frickin amazing game?

    I own MGS3, I know. I can't find Subsistence ever. ###### sux,

    You could always try online:

    <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Gear-Solid-3-Subsistence/dp/B000BXKA38/ref=pd_bbs_5/002-9637653-5632806?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1192310595&sr=8-5" target="_blank">MGS3: Substance</a>

I loved MGS1, when I played it years upon years ago, but when I went through MGS2 I thought "wow this is pretty bad." Fatman and Vamp were some of the lamest characters I've had to dispose of. Never got around to 3, probably should.

Did you mentally block out Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven and Liquid Snake or something? Not to mention that the Cobra Unit is ten times as dumb as anything in either of the first two games.

Besides, you're doing it wrong. The correct way to play MGS2 is to pretend that "Missions" is the only option in the main menu.

I recently replayed MGS1 as well. I found that the gameplay and even graphics had aged very gracefully and that some of the features were way ahead of their time. Still, some things that I accepted when I was 12 years old seem completely silly now: "I'm moving your controller with the power of my MIIIIND" *rumble*rumble*rumble*

How was Liquid Supernatural in MGS1? Or Vulcan Raven for that matter. He was spiritual, but hardly supernatural. Psycho Mantis I guess, but he wasn't lame and far-fetched like the MGS2 ones.

Yeah, Pyscho Mantis wasn't lame and far-fetched. Just lame. "I CAN SEE YOUR MEEEEEEMORY CAAARD!"

I actually played it on PC so yeah, he didn't do that, but still. Come on.

Liquid survived a helicopter crash that would've killed the terminator, dozens of rockets to the face, a brutal fist fight, a 20 meter fall, hundreds of armour piercing bullets to the face (again!), and a car crash, all in the same day. The fact that they didn't try to use some supernatural excuse for this only made it even more ridiculous, especially in a game with magical shamans and floating psychics. Vulcan Raven carried a 170kg gun around and could turn into a flock of ravens at will.

And what is it about vampirism or sci-fi doodads (Fortune) that makes them more "lame and far-fetched" than mind reading or telekinesis?

There are a lot of valid complaints about the series as a whole, but MGS2 didn't commit any crimes that MGS hadn't already, especially when you take the mind-bogglingly retarded cutscenes of Twin Snakes into account.

Everything Psycho Mantis did to break the fourth wall was awesome.

There's a difference? Well, except you can claim to communicate with the spirits and such without ever having to do anything to prove it because those who doubt you are not in tune with the spirits enough to see the truth.
I guess it's true that Raven never actually did anything supernatural. He didn't TURN into a flock of ravens, he got EATEN by a flock of ravens. And all his spirit talk may have been either delusional ramblings or a deliberate act to unnerve and unsettle his opponent and disrupt his concentration.
170kg is only 20kg heavier than Heavy Weapons Guy's "Sasha." Nobody's calling him supernatural.

MGS3 was fine with it's camera, learn2firstperson. I enjoyed it so much more because I had to actually utilize something that was borderline useless in the previous two games.

I think it's just a matter of how much of it there was. Many characters survive way more than they should be able to take, including Snake, hardly supernatural. There was this entire annoying element to Fortune and Vamp. Vamp gets shot in the head and comes back to life in moments? Then he floats around and swims in water that's apparently buoyency-less? Not to mention Fortune doing the dumb "ha ha you don't have bullet immunity" "HAHA YES I DO I SUMMON MY SORROW AND DEFLECT UR MISSILEZ".

It was just annoying. Vulcan Raven was awesome in MGS1, and it was somewhat more subtle. Psycho Mantis was such a great character, too. Fortune and Vamp were barely characters at all. My biggest complaint with MGS2 was actually the fact there was little character development, and none of the bosses had any interesting backstories and such.

Phil Lamarr (Marvin from Pulp Fiction/Hermes from Futurama) did the voice for Vamp, that's pretty awesome.

Almost as dumb as the colonel telling you to switch plugs with your controller in MGS1 or how psycho mantis reads your memory card, right?

I wish they stuck with the tanker incident for MGS2 and never switched over to Raiden. I kind of liked the plot, just not the characters.

I thought I knew something about this franchise, but threads like this make me realize how wrong I am.

I played through the tanker half of MGS2 and then fizzled out. there were like 2 characters in it - where did all these others come from? I recognize exactly 1 person in this photoshop I stoled from a TF2 photoshop thread:

I agree with the supernatural bull****. I think it ruined an amazingly good story line, and was pointless to add to the story.

Ah well, even MGS4 has it... It'll still be good though.
