It's a texture, not even a complete item by itself. It represents a rather small portion of HL2ep2. And you will have no effect on valves market.
Of course if you really pissed Valve off they might come at you with a lawyer, but it seems like something that would be a big waste of resources to me.

So does that mean it wouldnt be to bad if i got the textures from the antlions nest ? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
I assume you mean you want to use them for an official NS2 map. If you do, then the answer is no. But not for copyright reasons; we want to stay away from the Source look, so all NS2 art assets will be custom built.

Aahh ok <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />, i can see where your coming from. But what i had in mind was the textures on the walls on the tunnels , the rock that has bump mapping etc (looks nice and shiny). But ok , ill guess ill have to wait for ns2tr to start work on the south route <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />.
um there's a commentary node on making them shaders, and na you wouldn't want to use there textures. tho they could get pissed at that, if not for private use, but just follow the same methods, i think this is also the same or similar shader node used on alxy in the resurrection scene. to see through the clothes, skin to the muscle tissue.

Remember NS2 isn't a mod, it's a standalone game. It's possible that valve includes the use of textures when you develop on their engine but I don't know. Still that would be specified in their TOS agreement and not what constitutes "fair use".
Yeah just use em, its a freely released map after all.
I dont understrand the arguement that it wont fit the theme.. thats entirely down to the artistic skill of the level designer. With the right lighting and placement you can make it look completely different to ep2. Its not like your planning to use a distinct logo on or something, its just a generic material.
This is a commercial game, and the maps will be sold to unknown worlds to use in NS2. Therefor there is no "fair use" when it is released. That doesnt mean you cant use them as placeholders, which would be consitered fair use, and its possible that valve would allow the textures used, I dont know about that.
Well i was sort of thinking as a placeholder etc , if and when the test release gets out, im hoping it might have some rock texture to change over. As a good 25% of my map will be using this texture on a different route, unless i can find a subsitute the map will all be preety much the same ( well at least in 2 different routes).
I've recently come across a very sexy and vast sci-fi texture set. I'd have to pay for it of course, and credit it, but it would be royalty-free from there on. I know that NS2 will be getting its own full texture set, but would a map with its own texture set obtained as such be disqualified from being a candidate for official?
I don't think ill have the time next year to make a full on map, but i think i want to advance my skills in texturing so i think ill break apart the nstr2 wads and dirty some of those textures up as well as make a few unique ones.
I just wanna start seeing how cartoony they look. then see if i can perfect said cartoonyness and or advance it adding my own flavor.

This probably falls under fair use.
