That doesn't fix it. Was forced to format and lost all my data. Reinstalled and I get the same crash in both HL and HL2 games with steam ingame overlay disabled and friends disconnected. I noticed this first when there was an update to beta steam community.
After opting out of the beta my problem was solved, two days later steam community went public and crashing resumed. Least with HL2 games I can throw my comp into standby quickly and then bring it back to fix, doesn't work for HL games.

Yes it's "normal". You have an ATI. I have a lot of crashing with NS too. ATI Radeon 9550. There are so much problems with ATI and NS. You can search those forums, there are so much threads about ATI Radeon 9xxx cards crashing with NS.
One temporary fix I found which reduce the crashing is setting AGP Speed to 4x instead of 8x. This is the ONLY solution I found. I searched a lot over those forums and in google etc and there was lots of crashing issues in games with ATI Radeon 9xxx cards.
But those problems don't happen in CS for me...Not in CSS either...but happens in Insurgency (hl2 mod) when I have AGP Speed to 8x.
ATI cards really suck...so much problems with games.
You say it started happening not long time ago, but you probably set your AGP Speed to 8x not long time ago or reinstalled video card drivers...
Anakin, did you read any of the previous posts? Quite a few people with at least three different rigs having the exact same problem. I doubt it's his ATI card that he accidently switched to 8x AGP without realizing it.
Anyway, I just tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling steam, halflife, and NS twice, and I crashed on my first leap attempt. So, nope, still not fixed.
Is anyone on the development team looking at this thread? There's definitely something wrong here since that steam update and the community hasn't been able to figure it out.

...<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Well you know <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/index.php?showuser=14029" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/style_images/icons/developer.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />puzl</a> looked at it (or at least tried to make us think so) in another topic (<a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=102609&view=findpost&p=1650774" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/forums/ind...t&p=1650774</a>) but theres not much coming back out of that.
I get the feeling they don't see how many people are having this problem. I mean its like 90% of the players and everything is still so fuzzy, no one knows whats happening exactly.. And no one is really helping like this topic has over 1000 views, but just 35 (with this one) messages and like different 10 users.
Maybe if some more people started going in with it, or try to help finding out whats wrong with any type of suggestions we could actually try to figure out some things. but no one bothers or something...
Hey guys, Ive never joined any game forums in the last almost 10 years Ive played HL and its mods, but this problem has convinced me to do so. I too freeze upon blink/leap, though mostly when I blink. It seems sometimes to freeze when I switch back using a hotkey to an attack weapon from blink, or maybe when around players or objects. This seems to kind of be consistent, but not 100 percent of the time. I am on a laptop and here are my specs:
Windows XP HE Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.79ghz 1gig ram radeon express 200m video
But this problem is very annoying and nothing I have done has fixed it yet. I have reinstalled both steam and NS with no fix yet... :'(

Look guys.
I have NO idea what is causing this TBH (and It does not effect me), however, if yalls want it fixed I would suggest doing this:
1) Post System Specs including: a) CPU b) MOBO w/ firmware info c) GFX Card w/ Driver info d) Sound Card w/ driver info e) Networking interface with driver/firmware info (NIC, router, Modem, firewalls, etc) f) RAM (no, not just amount, but type) g) OS and update status h) Other programs running
2) All variations of the above you have had the problem with (update drivers? roll back drivers? windows updates?)
3) Modes you have run NS in (Full screen, windowed, rez, details, etc)
4) All things you have done to try and fix this (Reinstall windows? drivers? format and reinstall windows?)
approach this scientifically as a bunch of 'me too's does nothing for any one.
If you do not know how to get this info then do these 2 things: 1) Start -> Run -> dxdiag In the tabs you can find most of your information on your computer including driver info 2) Download <a href="http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php" target="_blank">CPUZ</a> for exact info on mobo, firmware, ram, etc.
I used to play ns without a problem on my machine, I have an ati card. However now there seems to be an issue with this freezing up if you react too quickly to things or just bhopping you seem to get mouse chopping. Imo its a steam update issue they have screwed something and because the hl1 community is slowly being phased out (it seems that way) they are paying pretty much no attention to fixing the problem.
I did find that lowering the priority of the hl.exe process alleviated the problem temporarily, until it just crashed and died in the ass.
not playing with flashlight reduces the crashes.. i think it might have to do something with gfx card , i played on a pitch black server and blinked for like 45m... didnt have a problem... only thing i could see was the marines when flashlight was on... was very hard getting to the cc lol

....<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Thats very likely, it happens in mid blink/leap even without flashlight. Mine is always off and it still freezes within the 5 minute line.
Ok, I seem to have got rid of the problem. I also dont have to run in that low priority mode.
Firstly, I un-installed my ati drivers following the ati support method then reinstalled only the driver not all the wanky control center crap aka 'ccc'. This meant that there should now be no hotkey bs installed. However this is not the case it seems it still runs as a service so I disabled the service and tried to stop it from running then killed the process ati2evxx.exe. When I did this I didnt have any issues however if it leads to system instability, obviously let it run. This process is the Hotkey poller so even when I uninstalled the ccc that uses to hotkeys and stuff it still got installed, oh well.
Virus/Adaware scan did that got rid of a few inane things that would have probably caused nothing towards the trouble.
I then used this; <a href="http://steam://support/?Issues=*" target="_blank">steam://support/?Issues=*</a> and payed special attention to anything that didnt pass, background proccesses and loaded modules. If you get any background processes listed disable them I had motherboard monitor as one of mine.
This has seemed to have stopped my issues, for now.
Its not so much the installing a new driver, its more stopping the hotkey polling from running. And making sure its not still running after one disables it as a service.
I just wanted to add to the growing number of people having this problem. And to say that disabling Steam Community in-game, disconnecting from the friends network on startup and disabling the ATi Hotkey Poller service all haven't worked for me, personally.
This is really lame, im glad to find out that i am no the only one though. ive tried everything from rebooting to, uninstalling/reinstalling steam. that includes, tweaking my settings on my graphics card, deleting instructed files in my steam folder. NOTHING works. hopefully the NS admins will fix this problem. HOWEVER the one thing that does help me, never go fade, never use leap/focus. stick to being lerk, and gorging, save for onos. and these problems rarely happen when i go marine. unless im going into an intense battle against fades/onos. stick to small games, or ns maps.
Use Alien movement (in keyboard options) instead of the regular weapon slot key. Now I can leap into marines without freezing. Haven't tried blink yet but i'm sure it'll work too. So try this if your still having problems.
For ATI users uninstall that CCC crap. Just install driver alone.
Your welcome. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
honestly it worked for me too, but im gonna have to give it a few more tries before i give it a 100% guarantee ya know. leap worked , i tried blinking with celerity for a long period of time, thru marines, didnt freeze so thats a good sign. im gonna have to run some more high stress situations next. id be nice if this bug was fixed and i didnt have to use 'v' as my 2nd weapon slot.
WORKS FOR ME <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> been pwning fade today in asero <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Well, I've found a fix thats worked so far for me. All I did after hours of reinstalling/retrying checking the cache etc etc, was to simply change my display mode to D3D. Played for about 2 hours without a hitch, with no noticeable framerate drop (my ATi fried so im on a ######ty integrated, but I never dip below 25). I guess this is a Temp fix for those on OpenGL, but even if you're on D3D and it's happening try tweaking your display modes. So far I played an hour in 16bit and an hour in 32bit (both at 1024x768).
Good luck finding a better fix, but I hope this helps some of you.
By the way, I was getting a crash about every 15 minutes prior to this, so although i've not played more than 2 hours, I do believe it's a usable solution.
P.S.
Dont try asking about this IN-Game, you will be ignored or flamed for not taking it to the tech forum.
Just try disabling the ATI Hotkey poller service like said. It has lots of problems with HL1 engine games. It doesn't make the system unstable at all. It justs disables the program for the ATI keyboard shortcut.

I never knew about that setting before - if I did I'd have used it all along. I have it bound to a button on the side of my mouse so it's extremely easy to hit.
well i guess im first to report that blinking with celerity thru high stress situations, caused my NS to freeze...they really need to fix this stupid crap. i cant wait for NS 2. hopefully the reason why they havent fixed this stupid bug is because they are working all the bugs out of NS2, if NS2 pulls this ######. im gonna dump on top of the NS case. then mail it to them in a box filled full of porter pottie fecies. that were found on a construction site. where all the workers were on speed so all their dumps are all runny. then im gonna ask for it back because i love NS even if its being a terd. i wont even clean it.
I am also affected by this issue. I tried initially tried completely removing and reinstalling Steam and Half-Life (and NS), which I thought worked, but the problem is definitely back.
Here is my hardware/software specs: <ul><li>OS: Windows XP Professional</li><li>CPU: Pentium M 1.86 GHz</li><li>Memory: 1 GB</li><li>Video Card: nVIDIA GeForce Go 6600</li></ul>Also, I don't have any viruses/spyware that I can tell, as I just scanned the other day (plus I use two different Anti-Virus programs [and I disable its "auto-scanning/memory-resident" features, so it's not doing anything unless I tell it to]). I really have no issue playing any other Half-Life 1 games, so I don't know why NS is having this issue.
Thank you so much i've been trying to fix this for a long time, i could play ns before without it freezing up on me like that but for some reason it just started doing it. Thank god for the internet <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
