He seems like he definatley knows his stuff <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />, and quite alot of insipirations there aswell. I never thought of doing like game development as a main carrer its sort of been a hobby/thing on the side for me. But that podcast is starting to make me think differently now.
Guest speaker ftw! I'd love to hear from some more people from the industry. It's a fun insight into how all this stuff works.

P.S. I must say that I strongly disagree with Charlie when he said that there should be a button that the player can press to skip a puzzle to get more of the story. That completely negates the value of the reward. If you can be rewarded with something effortlessly then much of the value inherent in that thing is diminished.
I found that to be one of the more annoying things about portal, it held your hand the whole way through. I was never frustrated. Perhaps I'm a weirdo in this but I find that being frustrated <i>a moderate amount</i> makes the reward that much sweeter. I've beaten the first three Myst games (Only started playing IV, the slow screen transitions annoyed the bajeezus out of me) so I could be regarded as being somewhat of a masochist in that department.
Nice, a Westwood College reference. That commercial annoyed me a lot until everyone started making fun of it. >_>
Those long pauses drove me nuts.
Sorry, the pauses are when Charlie is supposed to be talking. Next time we have a guest we'll get the recording working better.

Here we go: <a href="http://www.lerk.de/2007/10/8-entwickler-podcast/" target="_blank">8. Entwickler Podcast</a>. And I totally agree with digz.
you are my hero (after max and flayra <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />)
dank dir nochmal vielmals testosteron <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tsa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::tsa::" border="0" alt="tsa.gif" />
Sorry!
which is exactly why the dev's need to use a voice capturing software that converts to text. then no one has to do anything.
I have to agree with this as well - perhaps drop some hints (not TOO obvious!), but make it too easy and you'll have the same problem I had with Bioshock and the Vita-Chambers. You become careless, and the reward and satisfaction loses all value because it didn't really take any thought or effort - and you lose entertainment and play time, further removing value from the puzzle.
The way Valve do their coders/designers/management/etc all together in one group is how designers today work, that is, all people in the project have a say, drawing on their own expertise and experiences to form a synergetic output, where it can be the best of every world/viewpoint. Done correctly you get accomplishments like orange box, done incorrectly you get the New Zealand Government.

You profile says Aussie land, what do you know about Kiwi Land governing systems? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> From my perspective all the reports I have received from that side of the world seem to indicate that NZ is satisfying their populace better than Australia. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> Besides, if you want to harp on stuff that seems to operate by committee, really have no need to look any farther than the Vogons, who will be stamping a order in triplicate to bulldoze this forum for a inter-web highway. (Refers to: Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy) <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Perhaps, a better example of game by committee that ultimately sucks is Second Life. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />
Edit: Added smileys and tiny joke explanation.
Those are rarely very accurate, and it would take a lot of cleanup work to get the text into any easily readable form. Not sure how much they've improved in the last few years, but last time I tried any voice recognition software I had to spend 20 minutes training it (reading paragraphs) and it still couldn't understand what I was saying.
Missed an 'r' there, buddy, not to mention "Aussie" and "Kiwi" land is hardly PC.
If I lived in 'Cultural Ignorance', particularly international ones, I'd have trouble finding work and making friends.
But I was here to give a mild elaboration on the 8th Podcast, not start a flame war.
I could have used other examples, like 'Telstra' but again, that's full of 'Aussie Land' culture.
Not if you get a good one - we have a guy here at work that uses "dragon naturally speaking" software because he can't type, and its got 99% accuracy.
EDIT:- might not work for all of you young kids who seem to end every sentence in a question lol - wow i never though i would be posting "generation" jokes......... sigh lol
I'm a current DigiPen freshman so hearing a successful graduate's views is cool.
To clarify on degrees, this is what they offer and how many years it takes (this is current as of this year):
4 year Art degree
4 year RTIS / Programming degree
4 year Computer Engineering degree
There is also a Master's in programming.
There is no more associates programs as far as I'm aware...
*Edit* If anyone wants opinions or curious on what the school is like their first year there, PM me.
