Today is the day to order a new processor for my rig. I'm looking at a Core2Duo 6300, but are there any good, lower-priced options that gives good performance?

A few months ago I upgraded to an Athlon X2 4800+. It's very nice. I hear it overclocks easily and know it runs cool, but I haven't had the need. It was $110 when I bought it in August, $100 now.
Of course, this isn't very relevant to you since I assume you have an Intel motherboard. I never see AMD recommended around here anymore though.

I'm seconding this, very efficient price/quality processor. Even though it isn't the best processor around it'll still last you a long time until decent quadcores come out. It's also fairly cheap.
As far as the AMD question.. Almost everyone agrees that currently, intel > amd. I don't even know why, but hey, all those people can't be wrong, right? .. right?

Intel has more raw power per clockcycle, lower wattage and lower temps. so yeah intel is nicer (but more expensive atm?)
Also I bought a E6420, has nice OC capabilities even on air cooling (using a P5B mobo and capable/stable memory) Quadcores currently is more marketing then bang for your buck. We need to see a doubling of FSB before quadcores are going to be interesting.
