<div class="IPBDescription">Stress Test / "Open Beta" in progress</div>They've got one over at Fileplanet, and surprisingly it's not for subscribers only this time around. You just need a Fileplanet account.
I've been following this game a little, but I won't have time to play around with it myself this weekend. So if any of you are playing it, do tell what you think of it. I'd like to hear more.

I 'played' in the last stress test and it was several gigs of wasted download to crash every 5 minutes, but I guess that was expected. Don't actually expect to "play" this game. The devs are just using us like poor saps!

I am about to try it. This post = prelude. I shall report back with important information! Wait with bated breath.

    THAT IS AN ORDER.

Edit: Rackham looks down and Morgan won't let me log in. The jaunty music was little solace. I shall try again some other time.

This happens pretty much every 5 minutes. Don't get your hopes up about getting to play it!

Yeah, it happened at the last stress test too. Apparently some people are able to play, however.

I still can't log in at all.

Edit: Just kidding! It works now. I made my character and ran through the "action" part of the tutorial. I was running around town talking to the other tutorial NPCs when I got booted from the server. The beginning town is totally clogged with newbies (durrr, of course) and it was super laggy, but the movement was still smooth and the music was really nice. Given that I played for about 15 minutes, I can't make any kind of decision, but it certainly wasn't awful. The real time shadows were a nice touch (I noticed them in the first tutorial leve) but I can't remember if they show up 100% of the time.

You're not really supposed to be able to "play" the game, just to see how hard the servers can crash every 5 minutes from all the thousands of people trying to get in.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
As of yesterday the servers were doing so well that they want more people to join to try to crash the thing. They're offering entrance into the beta for anyone who reaches lvl 5 or above in the Stress Test. This is designed to get even more people on and hopefully smash something. Seeing as the server I was on went down, I guess they succeeded.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
If a stress test results in the servers going down, has it succeeded or failed?
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Succeeded. The idea is to overload the servers until they break, then find out why they broke, and fix it, then break them again, and so on. Also you find out how the system handles a huge influx of new players, and stuff like that.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Oh okay. I thought the object of a stress test was to prove "yes, our system can handle that."
  • AbraAbra Would you kindly Join Date: 2003-08-17 Member: 19870Members
Yeah, but If they can fix it every time it breaks, they will, in the end, have a product with no crashing.
That is, IF they can fix all the problems they encounter.
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
Indeed, I believe that to be the reasoning.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
so is it easy to get to level 5? I've been dying to try this stress test (and have been registered to be added to the beta for like 3 or 4 years now, still no entry for me) but now that it actually rolls around, I just got finished moving and don't have functional internet yet. Woe is me.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
They just went ahead and let everyone from the stress test into the actual beta. Pretty awesome.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
got to play a bit. i'm level 7. I'm getting pretty into it. the ship vs. ship combat is a little slow-paced, but at least it's different than your average MMO... haven't tried any PVP yet.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
chars were just wiped and the 'proper' open beta is now in effect. well, it's for fileplanet subscribers only for the next couple days. starts for everyone on the 7th I think.

I think the game is pretty awesome. it's a breath of fresh air to have an MMO with actual new gameplay for once. I still have yet to partake in the pvp however, and I think the pvp is pretty central in the endgame. I can also see how the game might not have lasting appeal. The progression is slower and not as rewarding as 'traditional' MMO progression. you slowly get access to bigger ships with more guns, but you're always just firing broadside after broadside at people, level 1 to level 50.

    Quoted from the official homepage:

    <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->PotBS Open Beta:
The first four days of the Pirates of the Burning Sea open beta will be reserved for our invited beta testers and members of the FilePlanet Founders Club. Open Beta is scheduled to begin worldwide on Friday, December 7th, 2007, at which point FilePlanet subscribers can get in. After that it’ll be open for everyone within a week.

You’ll find our Open Beta forum by clicking this link.

On December 7th, North American players that aren’t currently beta testers will have a chance to give Pirates of the Burning Sea a spin. Please visit this link for download information.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Fileplanet subscribers get in on the 7th it seems. Everyone else has to wait. Apparently for four days. The newspost is ambiguous and uncertain. It's possible that the beta is only for north americans, for example.

    Founders Club != FP subscriber.

That much seems clear. Also, according to PotBS forum posts, Fileplanet has rather large ads going "Play PotBS right now by getting Founder's Club!" Then when people GET Founder's Club, Fileplanet goes "lol out of keys." For some inexplicable reason, people are not jubilant about this.

    Edit: <a href="http://www.burningsea.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38799" target="_blank">Link.</a>

    BUAHAHAHAHAHA

Paying $10 to get to play PotBS 7 days early.

    Oh, yah, that was smart.

At least now I know why it was FC only (too few keys for FP subs).

Fileplanet's pretty funny. I actually find them rather useful, because the download speeds are as the kids say "off the heezy," but really if you expect anything from them above and beyond "fast download after a while in line" then you're going to be upset.

Well, I am willing to pay $4 a month for fast downloads with out witting in line, and thus do.

I don't download enough things that can't be found elsewhere that the fee would make it worth it, but $4 isn't so bad considering all the little perks. It's just not something I'd ever really spend money on.

Out of curiosity, does any one have a download link they can share (for instance, you are a FC member?)

As I would like to download this before tomorrow.

Disregard that I am an idiot.

as the 3 parts listed <a href="http://www.fileplanet.com/107862/0/0/0/section/Game_Clients" target="_blank">Here</a> were released on the 3rd, I am rather sure that is the open beta client (go download)

    5.2GB client? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

These game clients are starting to get a bit too big to download. Like when i saw LoTR Online 7 day trial i thought, hmm maybe ill check it out......until i saw the 8 gigabyte client download. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

honestly, I don't know why the client is so big. the graphics aren't that state-of-the-art. I still very much recommend giving the game a try when you can.

So what would the NS'ers be? I suppose a lot of people go pirate, but joining a country sounds cool too if you think about it.
