Only [WHO] Can Get a Companion Cube

Like Smokey the Bear's Catchphrase, Get It?
So some super awesome dude is making actual Companion Cubes. They're not life-size but they're most definitely not plush or paper, which is the biggest gripe I have with the existing offerings. One sentence in particular caught my eye:

QUOTE

If you’re looking for one of your own, you’ll have to be Ben’s best friend forever, or perhaps a persuasive Portal/Narbacular Drop developer.

Now anyone who has ever seen [WHO]Them in person, or seen pictures of him, knows that he is 200+ lbs of muscled persuasion. He could persuade people in ways they probably didn't know their body could bend, I would bet. You see where I'm going with this? Due to a fortunate set of circumstances, the Internet has brought together what appears to be the only fabricator of genuine miniature Companion Cubes and one of the only people on earth that the guy is willing to give one to, the second being a member of these forums! I'll let you do the math.

And Them, if your powers of persuasion triumph, we totally expect pictures of this thing with Gabe Newell or Erik Wolpaw or the Space Needle or a cat or something. Or all four at once.

Bah, wood. That just makes the Emergency Intelligence Incinerator's job that much easier. A real Companion Cube is cold, hard, uncaring metal.

Atleast you can not moan the wooden one isn't a weighted companion cube.

What's sad is your lack of love for the Companion Cube. It's like watching couples kissing on Valentine's Day and going "people can be so sad... why is everyone obsessed with this love thing?" In fact it's exactly like that but with a cube instead of a person.

Sorry, I'm not OLD enough to know much about that. You'll have to ask someone OLD, FEEBLE, AND DECREPIT instead. Someone YOUR AGE. Really, though, I can't expect someone so ANCIENT to understand something like love. Love is for the youth. Did you ever read Romeo and Juliet? This is like that but with a cube.

For the benefit of doubtful ones such as yourself I provided a link - if you choose to ignore it then your ignorance on the subject is your own fault.

Just so you understand it has nothing whatsoever to do with age.

And if you think "love is for the youth", what is it that keeps couples together for 50 or 60 years? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />

I read your "link." To even compare what was obviously then and now a cheap marketing trick to true, pure love is ridiculous and insulting. I don't take your deepest emotions and compare them to the latest advertisement on TV, now do I?

The cold, crushing loneliness that would result if they left each other, and a faint memory of what they felt when they were young. And I can't see how you can profess to understand love on one hand and then denigrate everyone's feelings for the Cube on the other.

You have so much to learn, young one. Both the pet rock and the companion cube are nothing but marketing ploys geared towards exploiting money from those foolish enough to dish it out for a cold, hard, inanimate object that cannot return ones affections.

Even you aren't naive enough to believe anything less than true love is what holds so many couples together until "death do us part". What these couples felt was nothing compared to what developed down the line and what they feel now - the memories you think they cling to to sustain their relationship are just that, memories. But don't trust MY word for it, talk to couples that have been together 50 or 60 years, or even longer.

They try to drive us apart, but our love will endure. Our love knows no boundaries, no social taboos. Our love needs no approval from them, their scorn only amuses us. We know love and companionship, and in this knowledge we are divine.

The Companion Cube is a marketing ploy? Nice try. Nobody, and I mean nobody on earth would possibly care about the Companion Cube without having already played through Portal. They can't sell one freaking game with the Cube. Maybe they benefit from everyone talking about it, but do you really think Valve put that thing in there specifically to make people fall in love with it and tell their friends to play Portal because of the Cube? That's ridiculous. I've never heard anybody recommend Portal so that someone else can grow to love the Cube. It's all about the humor, or the gameplay, or whatever. Nobody says "hey man you have to play this game there's this awesome cube thing that you'll totally dig." That would never work in a million years. The pet rock is the sort of think you can sell to somebody. You cannot sell someone Portal via the Companion Cube. The attachment process happens as they play the game, and if they're playing the game they've already bought it. The Companion Cube is not in the trailer for Portal or in any of the marketing material. Nobody even knew it existed before fans of the game started talking about it, and even then none of that talk makes any sense unless you've played the game.

And I can't see how you can say in the very same post that it's stupid to love a Cube that can't return affection and then say "until 'death do us part'." That's like saying you can't love a Cube that won't love you back, but you can still love a dead person who obviously can't love you back because they're DEAD. Unless you're suggesting that when somebody dies you stop loving them.

Is it okay to love a dog? Most people would say yes, and plenty of people treat their dogs like they'd treat a kid. How about a turtle? Is a turtle inherently worse than a dog? Not really. A turtle will return your affection about as much as the Companion Cube and frankly it smells a lot worse and will someday die. Think about it.... ... .. .
