I'd wait for NS2 to come out - I very rarely have real trouble finding open pubs, and that's despite my account still being banned from <BAD> for killing a lerk with 5 shotgun shells.
Well, my gameing community that i own is going to do a vote on what they want, so we will see what they want, if so we do ge ta server then we can always xfer it over to ns 2.
if ur asking if ur server is going to be popular, then all in all honestly probably not. The playerbase just isn't there for it and most of the userbase are regulars at certain servers. It would take a considerable amount of time to establish a playerbase for ur server.
If you can get your clanmates to populate your server at specific times, it could definitely take off. The real issue with getting NS servers going is the first couple of players. Once you have more than about 6, it will start filling up with a round. But when you have 6 or less, games just aren't that fun.
You can play Combat, sure, but there are a ton of players who refuse to play combat. I for one have a filter of 'ns' in the Mapname field, so i can't even see combat.
If you have clanmates like you said, try something akin to what Tactical Gamer has done. When they see enough people are online out of their friends, they send a mass message to all the groupmembers of the TG Waiting Room saying that they are Seeding the server. Sometimes it doesnt work, but often it does, and they get 6+ people to join all at once. The server just takes off from there.

Well on average i can say atleast 200+ people are playing this game (maby -50 for bots...) this is just in my server location, if you wanna take a chance with a server, get it up.
Make it lagless, and prepare custom maps, and go for NS2.
We've had almost 15,000 players on the <BAD> server so far. About 9,500 just in the past 3 months.
We've only had to ban 261 players (Guess that includes you Radix <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />).
As long as you have a community or bots to seed the server, there are players for it.

Total number of connections != total number of players != number of players playing the game at any given moment
The latter is about 200-300, and that's globally not just in your region. Europe probably has about 40%, US/Canada another 40%. There are about 170 servers, most of which are empty. So no, your server will not be very popular unless you make a continuing effort to get people playing on it (i.e. people you know). If you can't do this, you might as well be throwing money into the wind - give it to me instead or invest it elsewhere.
Take the "new" NSA, or rather, the fornification of the NSA name that renegade is bent on doing. He's done an amazing amount of shameless self promotion for his server and just look how popular it is. I check it randomly to see how many people are on, but it's dead most of the time.
On the other hand, some fairly new servers, like junktext, seem to be full at random times.
Maybe NSA is a bad example since it's an effort to revive something that died a couple years ago, whereas junktext's server is just a fresh start.
I would welcome a new NS community, one that skill bans (temporarily) bad players rather than good. I play a rediculous amount of time and would gladly play there. I had been doing the same on junktext's server, and it was working out well, but when the forums went down and the complete lack of admins to ban people who would repeatedly drop multiple CCs at the beginning of every round, I just got tired of playing there.
