I figured this deserved it's own thread.

I had heard of The Longest Journey before, but I bought it on Steam, and I've lost quite a bit of time playing it. It's like a really good book, in game form, and I was up until 4am last night playing it. The last time I checked my watch before that was midnight, and I had to be at work by 9am today.

Anyhoo... That's my example game, thanks sherpa. But what other games from yesteryear stand out to you? You know, the classics, that are so fun to play, or have such an innovative playstyle, or just a great story, that you use them to measure the quality of other games?

The quote was abut games released on Steam, but they don't have to be on steam.

If The Longest Journey counts as an old game, then I could go on for pages with games that are great. Just off the top of my head in no order at all, Mafia, X-COM: UFO Defense, Gaints: Citizen Kabuto, Tropico, Startopia, Dungeon Keeper II, Monkey Island, Brothers in Arms, Blade Runner, Fallout, Arcanum, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate II, Anachronox, Grim Fandango, Homeworld 2, No One Lives Forever, Deus Ex, Tron 2.0, Warzone 2100, Disciples II, Heroes of Might and Magic III, Jagged Alliance 2, Psychonauts, Republic Commando, and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines are all as fun now as they were the day they came out.

Republic Commando is one of the best games I've ever played, Tycho. And I kinda hate Star Wars outside of the fringe lore like the ancient history KoToR-era. The Rid###### game, while not old, came out before DOOM 3 so is fairly old now-days, and is definitely as fun as the day it came out. GTA2 is still great. Carmageddon? Yeah, baby.

The original Homeworld is better than the sequel, in my opinion. The Descent: FreeSpace series is great. I thought Star Trek: Voyager: Elite Force was pretty good. System Shock II is a must-play, even if the ending is somewhat strange. Try Red Faction for some fun, but it's pretty brief.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I'd probably go with Grim Fandango, WC 3, Starcraft, Duke 3D, Doom, Quake and UT. I was sort of attatched to Coolspot on the Sega Megadrive too <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Stunts, oh man that game was quality. First game I ever played that let you design your own tracks. Those corkscrews with a wall in the middle were mad annoying.

I'd gotten to the temple of atlantis, ferrying around cups of that power goo, when my mum unplugged the computer because I had to go to school. I raged so hard.

ahahah Test Drive II. Thank you for reminding me of that awesome game Zaggy! I still have the crappy music in my head.. And the noise the sound makes when it crashes (often into a tree) gives me the jeebies for some reason.

Spot on with the Amiga 500+, occasionally 1200. You win 5p off some sprouts.

    Bah.

    Speaking about old games.

I'm trying to find a list of games that are like R-Type. Trying to find one that started with a T (Try..Tyr..something) that was a top view scroller (like Vader) and trying to find another one that was on the Sega/Game Gear and maybe even the PS1 that was a futuristic side scroller like R-type, but with non-late 80/s graphics haha.

I'm not talking about the ones where you have to be japanese or emulate the game in slow mode to beat it when it's insane type of games.

I don't get why the longest journey gets any love at all. While the whole concept of both a futuristic and fantasy world combined in an adventure game sounds cool, it was executed so typically I just couldn't continue playing it.

Firstly, the main character, April, is absolutely revolting. The developers apparently tried to appeal to sex-crazed teenagers when creating her, finding too many opportunities to show her off in underwear. The only memorable things she says are only made so because they're really goddamn annoying; overly sarcastic 'I-got-the-last-word' snide remarks, that make me want to stab myself in the urethra.

Other characters are nothing special either. The tree thing in the beggining is overly cliched, in the 'ancient and all-knowing snob' kind of way, and whatever charisma few other characters happen to have is ruined by voice acting. None of the dialog is funny, interesting or memorable.

Moving on to the interface and puzzles, neither of which bring anything new to the table in terms of, well, anything. In the first chapters of the game you have to bring a time-sheet to your employer in order to get money to pay for a subway ticket. After searching everywhere and asking everyone as to where it might be, I log on to gamefaqs for some help. A walkthrough guides me to the very beggining of the game to Aprils room, where on a table lays her diary. I examine the diary while its on the table, and April mocks me with a sardonic voice. 'It's my diary' she claims. Gamefaqs walkthrough says that the timesheet is folded away inside the diary, something which the game developers thought very obvious, and decided to let the player figure out completely on himself with not a single hint. From anywhere or anyone. Obviously each item must be examined twice, always. So ok I grab the timesheet from the diary and head over to my boss' place. I tell him I have the timesheet, but apparently he doesn't believe a snide teenager, so what I actually have to do, is open my inventory with RMB, grab the timesheet, close the inventory, and use it on the assmonger. All of this took way too many clicks and keystrokes, and I honestly don't see why the developers didn't make all that automated on initiating conversation.

Didn't mean to make the rant so long, but yeah, if you liked the game, please tell me why.

Judge the game in historical context. It's from the early nineties. Back then clunky interfaces and nonsensical puzzles were all we had, and we LIKED it.

Oh, it's not from the early nineties? Well, I don't know then.

I don't see why it can't be judged by modern standards, since it's on sale now. And yeah, it's not THAT old. (Like, only a decade, right?)
