while i've never registered in these forums back when i was playing, it's been a while since i've looked at ns.
i've recently been burned on the "latest and greatest" games coming out (all went down the poopchute) and started reminicing about NS with my younger brother - we used to play all the time.
bioshock? crysis? cod4? might as well bathe in some scat.
i'd like to get back in, i've been thinking about it. i stopped playing back when steam came out and they dumped the WOW network for in-game browsing. so it's been a long, long time.
the only thing i'm sort of afraid of are all the changes. and finding a home server. in any game, i try to find one or two servers i will only play on. for example, the only fps game i play online right now is tf2 -- and only on the arsclan servers. but i've noticed playerbase has dropped a bit in tf2 in general since it's release.
if anyone has some good servers to recommend (i've been seeing "yo" servers being bounced around in some threads), feel free. i can't really describe my playstyle (it's variable depending on what's going on) but i'm a heavy team-based player. and i usually like sacrificing myself IF i know it'll actually make a difference at that moment.
or something.
edit:: hmm, after doing more browsing in the forums, .. i don't like the sound of "co_" maps that seem to be the norm. are the hour/s long style play gone? i don't want to play ns like it's some team-dm game.
no, not all players are gone <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
but the most of the players stopped playing NS, cause.. the gamers of today want games with brilliant graphic and great effects.. games like crysis or ut 3 that makes me cry..
im play ns since the first version of this f***ing best MOD ever. with my friends, we play it on every LAN..
till now, i can´t find a game as NS! its my fav. game, and there will be no LAN without ns <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> but, my internetconnection is to bad, to play NS online and the most of there NS server are in the US <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
i dont carry about the games of today, i will stay to ns :] and looking fine to the NS 2 Future
Basically, this game is old. Many people who are still gaming probably updated their computers and likewise play games that allow their systems to be pushed to the max.
WoW was also released after NS, NS had a decent decline because of that game as well.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm the OP, btw. I'm not denying that the game is dated. My real question is now that everyone has better computers, what game are they all playing that has the level of interaction and excitement that the heyday of NS had?
I guess I miss the old NS days. I assumed I simply missed the bandwagon onto the next great game. Maybe there wasn't one after all. Or maybe it was WoW. That seems to be the consensus.
And personally, I don't see NS2 coming out ever. And if it does, I expect it to be a debacle. The best parts of this game were coded by outsourced peeps, and you don't see them very active anymore.
I guess if I want to really move on from NS I should do that girlfriend thing like everyone else is doing. And by girlfriend, I mean pornography.
And lets not forgert that jumps in graphical improvement are getting smaller and smaller.
Just compare any game from 1985 to one from 1995 and then the 1995 one to one from 2005. Also: We do not recognize alot of things we see.
When I turn off brass ejection in NS without you knowing, would you notice?
Do you notice the difference between a Half-Life2 and a Crysis character when you are in a fire-fight?
Sure, I prefer Source over GldSrc, but the differences are getting slimmer and slimmer. Source still looks good, because the characters and the environment is detailed enough to keep the illusion during a fight. When walking through an empty server and looking carefully you notice blurry textures, low polygon tables etc. But who walks around on empty servers?
Well I stopped playing this game for 1 good reason... Natural Selection COMBAT!!!
back when NS was first released, I was so excited to get behind a game that was pure strat not just some "hey im here and im gonna shoot ya" Granted thats a fun line of game play but my god to actually achieve victory with your team mates by earning your upgrades was just something new of its time.
Than combat came out, and well everyone that joined the game for the strategy just slowly faded away.....only after about 2-3 years of being an inactive NS member am I actually interested in the game once again now that the development is this far along.
I plan to give all the advice that I can to the creators to help them make NS just the way it used to be and bring back the masses to the game.
I know i went on a rant but hey its the truth..I want to see NS2 Flourish like it did when it was first released and wasn't just another FPS but a game you could really sink your teeth into.
theres my 2 cents for this topic <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />

Believe it or not, I switched back and forth between NS and WoW, while getting a real job somewhere in the mix. Back in april of '07 I didn't so much kick the habit as get bored of it. And a year later I'm actually showing signs of having a real life... GASP! Sometimes entire days go by without my computer being turned on at all!. If I do use my computer it's usually for a good cause like porn or sports gambling. The only gaming I do these days is a little Wii Tennis or Guitar Hero. See ya'll in NS2!
Ah! I haven't logged in since.......3 years? 4 years? No idea really.
But yes, WoW DID take me from this game.
I used to write fanfics for NS, but stopped when I lost months of chapter in a single computer reformat, and having lost interest in the game, I stopped writing anymore.
I 've HL2, and I wanted to install NS again some months back, but...HL2 doesn't go with NS for some reason, then I remembered NS ran with HL1.
Oh well, good memories here. Will be returning when NS2 is out, but for now...it's WoW for me!

Ontopic: University got to me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> and yes other games did take away NS time.
Haven't played NS in years, but I loved the playstyle. I keep checking back to see how NS2 is progressing. When/if that is released, I'll likely get back into things. Mainly because until the reset button is hit and we're all learning a new game, it's intimidating as hell to get back into the NS Classic community and be a n00b again. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" /> I just don't have the time to relearn everything I've forgotten or that has been changed.
I use to play 3-5 hours a day back in 02 and 03 and I played on Scott's House of Alien Rampage. It was a very hot server and was for a number of years. I am sure most of you die hards had played on it. I was Player 2B named L8r, and we were the -|YcSp|- clan (Yo comm, shotgun please)
It was by far the most I have ever played video games in my life and I would love to see NS2 happen. Why is it taking forever? Money? lack of programmers? Game rights? whats the hold up? I remember whenSteam took over game play dropped like a rock because of all of the issues and I do think it killed NS for the most part.
I do hope NS2 will come out soon, I know I would be first in line to get it.
I still run/manage the [I AM] clan NS servers, but personally have not played it in months. I really just lost interest... most of the people whom I enjoyed playing with (waaayyy back in the day) have all moved on with their lives (as have I). I remember first playing NS as a sophomore in high school (ish? can't remember really)... and here I am graduating college and going on to grad school. It's been a LONG time since I first picked up NS, and as such it really just doesn't do it for me anymore.
I find myself really just hopping on Halo3 with my roommates from time to time or just playing some Xbox360 games to pass the time when I'm real bored. I don't game like I used to, and haven't even upgraded my PC in years now haha. My new laptop outperforms my desktop <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I occasionally play TF2 when I'm bored, as I run those servers for [I AM] as well.
The general consensus I feel is that most people have grown up and moved on since first playing NS, and newer "prettier" and/or more engaging games have taken their interest. Will I come back to the community when NS2 comes out? You bet.
But it needs to come out first <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
I still play occasionally, but seeing as how this game depresses me more than it should because I can't stand idiots as well as before, I usually don't stay a whole lot. Not to mention that in classic you do need to rely on teammates (the said idiots usually) when you're not good enough to solo the whole enemy team by yourself.
Besides, I don't really know anyone still playing anyway.
I moved on to WoW, (the underbog/horde <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />) After getting banned from all the servers for being too good, it was time to put the game down. just downloaded TF2, going to go play that. I might make a guest appearance in NS, but i probly suck now.
I've been playing since the release back in halloween of 2002. I never made a name for myself, as I was a casual gamer.
I've came and gone, I notice alot of the Original servers are now gone, and all I see is Combat.. I miss the old NS.. and 2 servers isn't enough to keep me around.
Well i just signed up for this forum community, long time player/supporter... installing right now.... my steam account died and i needed a new one..
was running with CMF for sometime in know they hosted a server aswell, but that was pre v3... looking forewad to seeing you all around <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> and ingame.

Meh, I just became to absorbed into real life. I tend to play games here and there (TF2, the Wii, and occasionally running through Max Payne), but I am just busy with everything.
