I had the same idea myself a few weeks ago. I PM'd flayra for permission to try, but he didn't reply so I've decided to go ahead and try to design the game myself. Once I left computer gaming I turned my hand to board-gaming, and one of the games I acquired recently reminded me so much of NS I was inspired to try and make a workable game out of it.
It isn't past the concept stage yet, but I have a pretty good idea where I want to take it, and will start work on it in earnest in about a week. In the spirit of NS (a mod), I've decided to start out modifying the boardgame I have, then see if I can turn it into something completely different and fun like Natural Selection.
If I ever make anything decent, then I'll take it to flay and see what he wants to do with it. Releasing a boardgame would be a real boost for NS2, or vice versa, but we shall see. Most ideas like this don't get further than forums, and they take a hell of a lot of work and persistence. Maybe I don't have what it takes, but then again maybe I do <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Seeing as you are also in Brisbane, if I ever get the game to a playtesting stage, I will certainly PM you and we shall see if you can help (providing you are normal, plenty o' scary ppl out there on the interweb <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />)
If that board game ever does come out would buy it but then again it may never come out(here's to hoping <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />).
