<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->It's not very often that we get to report on Day of Defeat, but today is one of those rare occasions. An updating supporting Steamworks has been released for Day of Defeat: Source (both retail and Steam versions) that adds 51 achievements, in-game avatar display, and detailed player statistics in your Steam Community profile.

The update also adds features such as "nemesis/revenge" freeze cam and new particle effects that were introduced with Team Fortress 2. Along with these updates, a new map, dod_Palermo, will be made available. Palermo is a "remix" of the popular community map known as dod_salerno.

The update will be made available to clients within the next few hours, but for those of you server administrators who want to prepare for the onslaught of players, then using the hldsupdatetool, add the command "-command update
-game dodsbeta."<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

It's awesome that DoD is getting some love (it's a great game and I still play it today) but frankly the only thing I like about this update are the personal stats and the new map. All the other junk is extraneous. I want more maps and more weapons! Come on. The original DoD has a TON of absolutely amazing content that could be ported to Source. Where's all that?

Is the MP40 'greasegun' still in DoD source? I don't remember.

No greasegun. I don't miss it really but there you go.

Hmm, all I remember from this game is the MG42 it's hilarious recoil as in shooting it from the shoulder will make you look up at the sky instantly with whiplash speed. Now I know it's not know for accuracy when fired from the shoulder and the muzzleflash alone will make you miss a lot, but it does spray a LOT of bullets in the general direction of the enemy targets. But it is quite possible to keep it against your shoulder and shoot, though I would use the bipod instead <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />. And it appears steam locomotives are a thing of the past, oh wait WW2 is the past <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> And what about the animations of the player models walking, is that still as weird as it was when I saw it 1/2 2007-ish?

Ah well, I'll get back to WW2 FPS gaming when FH2 enters the European theater (FH2.2 I think, the next one). Meh perhaps I'll download DoD once more to see if I like it (if things have changed at all)

@Abra MP40 isn't the greasegun, the greasegun (M3A1) is an American response to the Screaming Eagles Airborne's need for an easy to carry/highly reliable sub machine gun to compliment their m1 Carbine (it's also less expensive then the Thompson, though not quite as good in terms of firepower). At a first glance from a distance they can look similar though...

Steam locomotives? Eh? In any case the player model animations don't look weird to me.

Actually I knew what the mp40 is, but I couldn't remember the name of the greasegun and the first google on greasegun said mp40 - I don't know why I thought it to have the same name as the Maschinenpistole 40.

Nope. I hope they don't at least. The step taken from the original DoD to the current DoD:S was to make the game much more class based and team oriented. Riflemen had their close combat weapons taken away and rifle grenades added along with ironsights to make them excel in long range combat, whereas they were severely weakened in close range without a ready-at-hand close combat weapon. SMG wielders were given an on-hand close combat weapon and had their accuracy reduced at long range.

If anything, I hope they add a semi-automatic rifle for the Germans (g43) and the m1 carbine as a standard class weapon for the Americans. Give the rocket soldier something else.

All I ever remember from DoD is that I got built-in no recoil on the M1 Garand after installing it over the network to a 300mhz computer. Hacks and cheats, who needs them?

    I saw a modern hl2 loc in a map <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

An official one? No way. Wouldn't put it past a custom mapmaker though.

Haze, I agree that a G43 (or a G41) would be a great addition and that the M1 Carbine doesn't really belong with the rocket dude. Give him an Ithaca 37 shotgun or a Grease Gun to match the Axis rocket dude's close combat Mauser, and give the M1 to a new class that would match the German G43 guy. Also I would like a paratrooper class with the grease gun/FG42 or something. They could just go copy DoD, perhaps.

FG42 was the one that looked like NS' LMG, right? Crazy overpowered, only time I played on that map I got that gun and played like it was Quake or something - ended at the top of the scoreboard.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
    Yep, that's the one.
  • AbraAbra Would you kindly Join Date: 2003-08-17 Member: 19870Members
I remember you could either biped it or equip it with a scope - the FG42.

They should reintroduce all the old weapons and balance them - more weapons = greater fun.

Is DoD doing a realism kit/equipment thing or is it just a frag mode disregarding most of the real behavior or soldier weapon loadout? Just curious as I actually never played the game after seeing the MG42 thing and immediately uninstallig it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Team Death match slowed down by snipers, MGs and campers. Linear maps with a lack in the flanking department.

It's not realistic at all, except for the one to three hit kills for most weapons. It's like the original DoD only faster.

I really wish they had just ported DoD to source instead of messing with it. Used to so much more fun IMO. DoD:S involves a lot of spray and pray. I have stood 5 ft behind a stationary target and unloaded a full 30 bullets of MP40 at them. They didn't die, but finally managed to figure out what was going on, turned around and offed me. Shoulda just used the 2 hit kill Punching alternate fire, huh? Oh well, the old DoD is still out there. Garand butt to the face! Now that was some satisfying ######...

I remember playing an early version of the original DoD for HL. The German grenadiers had like 4 potato masher grenades. Even NS have not seen this kind of grenade spamming in its time.

man I miss all the things of the old DoD, especially the paratrooper maps and the FG42. The greasegun was also fun to get kills with. dod_kraftstoff anyone?

I just played the new update for DoD:S and it altered the atmosphere of the game a lot imo. Now it's just like TF2 except with different maps and guns, and I hate TF2 so now DoD:S isn't that fun either. I guess I'll go back to DoD original...

It's not like TF2 at all. I enjoy the new update; the recoil is better, the graphics are nicer, and even though I don't care about the achievements, the names of them are very funny. Overall a nice job although I would definitely be happy if they added the paratrooper stuff back. That was great stuff. I want a BAR with a bipod!
