Ive started this topic as a rather open discussion about the ready room
in ns1 rather than getting some interface screen with loads of options on it when u reach a server, you get the ready room instead. From here you can enter a number of doorways leading to either the alien team, rine team, spectator or random team.
i rather like the ready room because its different to the entry in most other games but id like to hear other peoples ideas on
Whats the ready rooms purpose
how can it be improved
should it be replaced by an interface screen like other games e.g. cs of battlefield
How can it help in sorting out teams so they are even or uneven if thats wanted
can it give players more info on the map, the server etc,
e.g. there could be screens on one wall displaying info such as the player scores table, or real time footage of the map.
whats the best way to build the map voting system into it
are there any other extra features or actions that could or should take place in this part of the game
is it worth putting in decorative functions (e.g. some ns1 ready rooms are designed like bars or messes)

I hope they keep the RRs. I also like the idea of having scoreboards and other things, but I think if people want to spectate they will spectate so it's not necessary.
In the <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2007/06/a_good_sign" target="_blank">A Good Sign</a> blog entry Max notes that you could implement games on the consoles in your map. I would imagine you could see things like this in the ready room. <ul><li> A "hacking" mini-game that gives you access to the files of the crew during the evacuation of the vessel, like a captain's log, or a short video feed. </li><li> A display for the server's website if they have one or a simple game of pong(one player). </li><li> A display for the ranking of the player by 'using' the console(whether it's a global ranking, server ranking, community ranking).</li><li> A tutorial of the map.</li><li> A database of weapons, buildings, lifeforms(a link to a wiki)</li><li> The ability to customize player appearance</li><li> Mapvoting</li></ul>A lot of this stuff would be available in normal game menus also when not in a server.
On a side note since we're on the topic is immersion effects, when the menu comes up there should be a quick animation of the HUD, like a quick flicker of blue that denotes that the holographic screen is coming up from the helmet. Kharaa could have a swirling swarm of yellow bacteria.
One of the best features is the game doesn't have to start immediately. You can organize into teams, chat, discuss what happened last game, etc. Plus it often helps set the mood of the map.
Something I'd like to see added is a minimap of the map somewhere in the ready room so people can see the level before they join. Kind of like a "You are Here" map for malls or large sites. Just so people know where places are, can plan a little, etc. Monitors showing regions of the map would also be really cool, although might be exploited for pro games. Or perhaps they become an integral part of that map and its strategy.
Anyways, keep them.
Maybe you could make an infobox function that displays server messages. As the default would be the random game facts.

(this room isn't good but what's mentioned in here should be in the game <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />)
btw: i didnt check my spelling just made it in a hurry <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

or at least some sort of secret fun room in every readyroom
Butt seriously, ready rooms have some of my fondest and clearest memories of NS1, and a ready room like HoID's would be awesome. Adding a screen with an AI spectator would be sweet too.
maybe u can put some arcade games LOL.
Anything besides that I dont really care about, the TF2 intro movies are really nice, and I would rather see something detailed like that than a room, that usually just ends up being a copied piece of the map made into a "Ready Room"
an unblockable rave room <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
