ADMINS please fix this
I worked for about 2.5 days trying to get a dedicated server to run before posting in the Win32 dedicated server forum yesterday to ask for help. Then I spent another _entire_ day (~8 hours) trying to get the server to run. So, I'm reposting my fix here, too, because this is tech support, and Jesus I don't want anyone else to go through what I did trying to get the server to work. So, here's my post [again]:
*******************PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ADMINS*******************************
Okay, so this is an issue that server admins know already. See these links:
http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/in...p;#entry1691556

The dedicated server links from this website (I tried 5 different mirrors... a LONG TIME downloading) do not contain the file:
Steam_appid.txt
I'm sure nobody cares how I figured it out, but this is the cause of my problems with the server. It is a file that is not mentioned in Vadakill's guide, it is not a file included with the dedicated server files (BTW - What makes the dedicated server files any different than the client files? They all look the same to me...).
You have to add the steam_appid.txt file to your "NS" directory for your HLDS.exe. Enter the number "70" (no quotes) in the text file, then save it. Ta-Da. The server works.
Site admins, please revise the dedicated server .zip's to include the steam_appid.txt. IF you can get a server to start AND respond without this file, I would be THRILLED to know how, but I bet you can't. So please spare someone the frustration I've dealt with. I'm going to repost this in the tech support forums too, and I'm going to put in some extra words in this post to help people find it, because I thought I was having an issue with several things before I figured out what it was.
I searched for:
Dedicated server not responding
Port forwarding
Server crash
Dedicated server problem
And read *every* post those turned up before I figured out the problem.
Again, please, sticky this somewhere or write your own and sticky it or something. And please update those files. I've honestly spent about 20 or 25 hours trying to get this to work. All for one text file with 2 characters in it. Pfft. [angry face]

I don't think 3rd party mods should have to include a file that was omitted by VALVe on the last GoldSource engine update. This post would be fine if it was directed toward the people who missed adding the file.
btw, I can't believe they have not fixed it with another update yet. Then again, I will be very nervous when I see another engine update come along.
It doesn't make sense [to me at least] to say "download the dedicated server files here" and then for people trying to run a server from those files to have to search the forums to find that, well, there's a file that wasn't included that is necessary for the server to run.
It doesn't matter who's fault it is, or why the file isn't there, just that there is a file missing, and the server doesn't run without it.
Maybe you don't even have to add the file, re-zip the whole mess, re-upload it. Just put a note on the dedicated server download page saying you need it. Just something to let people know it's required without having to dig to find what's wrong. It's something that would take an admin a minute, and will save a lot of people a lot of work. I downloaded several different dedicated server .zip's before I came to the forums, and even then I didn't get any help. It took me several days to find what the issue was, and I just want someone to do something to let other people know what the issue is, or even better, make it a non-issue.
The forums shouldn't be where people go to find they have a file missing. They should see that where they get the files from.
