<div class="IPBDescription">Is it too late?</div> I would like to start to learn to be a commander, but is it too late too start? I'm pretty sure if i jump in the seat and not move as quick as they want me too i'll be booted from the chair.
Luckly the EC server has open arms towards new commanders. You are not allowed to vote off the commander if he is new - only if he is AFK/extremly mean.
Here is a tip for ya to get going as commander. Never, ever turtle (a term used for putting lots of defense in your base then just sitting around) becuase it will get you nowhere. Try to take a hive <i>right off the bat!</i> With one hive under your belt take another all while uprading and getting nodes. The key to success with marines is expanding quickly. The moment you stand around in base is the moment you die.
I'd also reccommend playing with bots for a while (check the top of the forum for the thread with the download link) to get the hang of things. Might want to find a good <a href='http://rawr.mine.nu/commander.cfg' target='_blank'>commander script somewhere</a> <-- hint hint (hehe, okay, linking to my own script like that is kinda silly, but it really does help when playing commander. I'm a HORRIBLE comm, and it helps me out a bunch <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> ) Anyway, good luck with commanding, this game needs as many good comms as it can get.
I try to be nice to new commanders. If a commander is new, I try to accept that fact, and accept that i will lose the game.
Some tips:
- Don't listen to people begging for HMG's and HA. Give it to them if you planned on it.
- Never EVER ask: "Who wants HMG/HA?". Drop it in the base and tell them it's there. Or hand it to people individually. I was ona game where the commander spent half his time trying to decide who to give guns to.
- Spacebar (jump key) is your friend. If someone calls for ammo, push space, and it will take you to them. It will take you straight to any alert.
- Assign people to the boring jobs. One skulk can destroy an unmanned base very fast. Make one marine guard that hive you spent so much time taking. It's not all that fun, but it is necessary.
- Major marine advantage #1: Siege. Do not send your men in to a heavily defended hive. Keep them outside, tell them not to attack. Build turret factory, upgrade, drop a few regular turrets, get a siege up when you have the thing upgraded.
- Major Marine advantage #2: Phase gates. Have a hive you wanna keep? Then Put a phase gate there, and in your base.
- Commander mistake #1: Not properly covering a turret factory. Make sure that you have turrets all around the factory. If you don't, then a skulk will find the ONE spot your turrets can't hit, and will eat the factory. then the rest of that forward base.
- Handy Tip #1: Give out jetpacks, shotguns and mines. Even if you can afford HA/HMG, mines are really useful. Find a marine that knows his stuff and hook him up with some.
That's all for now. If I see you in the big chair, I'll remember to be nice. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Actually not true. A few days ago i was on a server where i played marines and someone asked who wants to make commander. It was the first time i played marines ever (at least for more than 5 min) cause all the other times the aliens had less or much less players. And since i read the manual and knew the structures from testing around a bit in lan game i jumped in the cc. Well, we played a good game and marines won (actually it is very hard for marines not to win if the commander knows what he does and the marines follow the orders, luckily most of the time at least one of those does not happen :o). And not because the alien team was bad, two of my friends were on alien team and they are very good players. I wanted to join alien team as well but marines were low on players (for the first time since i play ns and i play ns since 1.00).
So you don't need practical experience as a commander and so it's never to late to start your first commander game. But you DO need to know the manual and the marine structures. So if you ever plan on commanding a game read the manual and play around a bit with the marine structures in lan game so that you know what they look and do. If you get into the command chair and then have to ask questions like "what do i need to build structure x" or "why can't i give out weapon y" you will get slaughtered. And right so, cause you just ruined the game for everyone.
Don't be afraid to command a game if you never did it before but make sure you know the rules (manual, marine structures, weapons, tech tree etc) and have a general strategie. Once you sit in the chair it is to late to think about basic things like "how to defend the base best" or "what structures do i need to get heavy armor". You will have enough to do with ignoring the cries for grenade launchers 2 mins after the game has started and you have 4 resources :o)).

20/12/22 wins/losses/others I am not the <i>Best</i> commander, but I can get the job done. <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->
My server is set up with Cheeseh's RCbots, and is advertized as newbie friendly. Feel free to stop by, and if there are folks on, they're almost always willing to train a new commander. If there aren't, feel free to order the bots around. The Playpen is a small server, so it's kind of cosy, and the players I seem to get are of good quality and will give advice when asked.
People are saying don't command if you don't have experience... Where are they supposed to get experience from? <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
ohh, one tip... early on, i leared how (almost) to command sucessfully, and i have 6 wins under my belt...as commander..and umm *cough* 6 not wins!)...
i have a different stratagy that seems to work.not work for me...
most people on the servers have been playing CS, and joke about jumping aliens..*cough lame* anyhow, i don't give ANY orders, nope, not a single one. i put things down when they ask, and seem to find myself one of the prefered commanders on certain servers.
here's a tip on starting out:
1 marine start 1 TF (turret factory) 1 marine start as many turrets as possible......
then let them go... when they hit a resource, tell them to stay there....
when they hit a base, tell people to go there (i hate the "orders" thingy, and if somone asks for them, i tell them to guard theselves, or another player...keeps them protected.)
anyhow, here's a little tip, don't be afraid of failure, or death, or even getting kicked out of the chair a few times, the thing is, you won't end up like superman, this horse...it's safe to fall off of.
number one rule for commanders, AND marines, don't be afraid of death/lose (unless you've got something special)

Well, if you are a fast learner it might not be all that hard to be commander. But like everyone said, train with bots first, to see how it works...
Never mass-manufacture heavy armor if you cannot support welder as well*.
Keep you men alive, especially those with heavy equipment*.
* Soldiers' behavior and skills are on a different topic.
You don't only need to research and produce heavy equipment, but also to maintain it.
Use hotkeys.
Study economics.
Lastly, when you are losing and your soldiers are blaming you, do not leave the chair, shouting "YOU BE COMM" but leaving 4 or 5 resources. That will only make you look even worse. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Get on a commander training server, check server forum, they will teach you.
Alternatively, create a langame, maybe with some bots to get the feel of it.
Do NOT try commanding without SOME experience or you will **obscenity** a LOT of people off.
