    Cool interview.

The above quote scares me. I liked the possibilities of a number of aliens infiltrating enemy lines as skulks then evolving into something nastier, like gorges in vents to bile bomb. Obviously I don't know enough to say that's not possible, so I'll just say I hope it still will be, with the aid of infestation nodes or something.

Aliens can already morph where they want...

In context the quote means that aliens can morph into new lifeforms on infestation. I think I'd rather see reduced cost or time for morphing when on infestation, but I'll have to see it play out first.

I'm getting the impression that the alien commander doesn't actually place structures. It seems more like the com gets to manipulate the infestation to help out the aliens. Is this what you're getting at here?

I like the sound of that.

Any chance of an ETA on that podcast/videocast you guys mentioned in the Twitter feed?

From a lore...or practical standpoint, how does an alien commander function? I can understand how a marine commander would order structures to be placed, control robotic weapons, etc. but how could an alien...control organic material? And will it be called the "Alien commander" or something more fitting, like "Hive mind" or "Alien Queen"?

Well, last time they spoke of it you had to interface with a hive to take on the a-comm role, so it could be as easy as breathing, and just as impossible to explain.

The interview mentions that they want to keep the teams very different. Perhaps the alien commander can't place structures or waypoints per se, but instead gets to control where the infestation goes, and maybe place 'beacons' (like "Enemies here" or "Fortify here") visible to the aliens on the ground when they're within a reasonable range, rather than only to the selected players.

Valve's recently released numbers show that CS sold 4.2 million copies, not to mention all the sales of CS: S, Condition Zero, and the XBox version. And I think those numbers aren't including sales over Steam. Well over 10 million copies combined.

    That said, I share your hopes that NS2 sells as well as Counter-strike has <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Edit:

<!--quoteo(post=1695154:date=Dec 4 2008, 03:24 PM:name=Wisp)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Wisp @ Dec 4 2008, 03:24 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1695154"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->From a lore...or practical standpoint, how does an alien commander function? I see the alien commander functioning as the hive mind, with (my guess) full control over non-player alien entities such as buildings (controlling them, not creating them) and infestation, and limited control over players (some type of system for giving commands or suggestions, either to single players or the team as a whole). Just a guess, though, and previously released information that I'm not remembering may contradict these guesses.

Alien Commander worries me. I liked how in NS1 the teams were different in that respect... Dictatorship vs Democracy.

It made for some really interesting team mechanics, and helped to provide a very different experience on either side.
I remember going Marine when I just wanted someone else to think for me, and Alien when I wanted a much more iltellectually involved experience.

Just to clarify before someone yahoo starts spouting... when he says the Marine life system is like Call of Duty 4, he does NOT mean that they regenerate over time.. he means you simply see how "hurt" you are and can ask for meds/act accordingly

Nice interview guys, hope to to start playing sometime next year!

Agreed. I'm sure they can make it work, though. And for the people who dislike the way it works, I'm sure someone with LUA skills will make a "classic" mod as soon as the game is out, or before it's out if they release the NS2TR with the right tools and info to do so.

Good stuff. So does that mean you guys are out of the "alpha" stages(no new major gameplay mechanics)?

Nice little update - although I do like the golliath updates more, its good to have some connection with the community fair often.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the alien hive-mind concept works out with the infestation and how it will effect marine gameplay (burning back etc).

exactly, just ask the alien commander for an infestation node in the vent, to create a patch of DI so you can morph into a gorge. it will even heal you in the vent too!

i wonder if when he says <i>morph</i>, he still means egging...

also the alien egg respawn idea is really cool, i like it that you can decide when and where you respawn.

Bah, an alien commander? Now the 2 sides will feel too alike. What I loved about the original was the fact that each side was so amazingly different, it was like playing 2 different games on 1 battlefield against eachother. Something so many games have tried and failed misrably at.

I'm not sure how I feel about an Alien commander, but the idea he can control the infestation already has me interested. Now go make it fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    50,000 copies? I don't think that'll be a problem!

    yeah true...

A straight copy of the marine commander obviously wouldn't work, a different sort of commander would be cool though, e.g. a 'hive mind' type approach. There's also the potential for the alien com to change as more hives come online.

Keeping with the different experience for each side. It would be interesting to see some left 4 dead mechanics. Either with NPC aliens, incapacitiation on marines, or the like. Incapacitation inparticular seems an ability that would be pretty consistent with aliens, e.g. pinning a marine to the ground while biting them.
  • haymohaymo Join Date: 2005-01-09 Member: 34040Members, NS1 Playtester
i kind of liked the idea of the two races to be totally different, one with a commander and one without, I think it's a shame that aliens will have a commander, but of course will have to see how it plays out. Also, not having a hud is not a good idea for a game that (i guess) will be competitive.
  • SirotSirot Join Date: 2006-12-03 Member: 58851Members
They are trying to reduce the games learning curve and having commanders on each side allows a more unified resource system.

I think they should still be able to knife, if so.
