<div class="IPBDescription">Have you played AVP2?</div>The development team has probably thought of such a thing as flares, but if not then I will explain.
Imagine this! The aliens have cut off energy supplies for one big hall (or a tunnel, or perhaps a corridor) and its pitch black in there. You can't even see the aliens lurking inside <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skulk.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::skulk::" border="0" alt="skulk.gif" /> !!!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />
You all of a sudden realize that you flashlight has been stolen by one of your teammates (good for nothing *****) You crawl into a corner and keep repeating - I'm in my happy place. I'm in my ...
But wait! There still is a hope! You suddenly remember that you have stuffed your pockets full of flares while no one was watching (hehe) You start to throw them in the dark like a mad man creating some kind of light bridge through the darkness <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />
Your teammates arrive and follow the trail of flares right to the hive <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> !
They all get eaten by an Onos! But still it was an awesome adventure!
I'm just saying that if there would be darkness all around you (and your teammates, maybe even at marine base) then it would be thrilling to fight off aliens <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/asrifle.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::asrifle::" border="0" alt="asrifle.gif" /> with the only light source comming from the flares that are scattered all around the base! It would be like some kind of survival\futuristic\scary experience.
Thank you for reading my story. Best wishes for the development team. I hope my suggestion was helpful!

I wouldn't mind having flares. but a lot of tweaking would have to be done such that the marines are not disadvantaged or overly advantaged. I'm in favor of having many flares for the marines, but each one lasts for only a short while. Having too little flares would make the marines very conservative and I doubt they would be used much at all. Having flares last for too long would mean cutting off some alien paths since they would not want to go into the light and be seen.
Of course, having a lot of flares lasting for a short time would be similar to having a flashlight. And the flashlight is less complicated. But it's nice to have a bit of variety once in a while. Personally, I don't think it will be a big gameplay change, unless its few flares and long duration, which I am against.
This implies there are areas that are extremely disadvantaged to the Marines without lights (flashlight or flare). This further implies restricted regions of the map. This is also countered by people with higher gamma settings so that they *can* see in the dark.
Pitch dark is never a good gameplay design, especially when the other side can see. That being said, if you can't see the walls it's impossible to navigate (i.e. some of the vents in ns_bast).
I would rather there was creative use of shadows, but not obscuring shadows except for the occasional corner. Use other things to create cover, such as textures and small obstructions.
Or make it a freebie in the Marine loadout when researched. Every Marine gets either 1 free grenade or flare (assuming both are researched) to select from.
What the flare would do is allow a portion of a room to be temperarily lit up with another light source (lets say one that is not powered and heavily dynamic infested), instead of a 1-use extra grenade for firepower.
Honestly they could just make something look like a HALO sticky grenade(small simple and round), and just make it a big 360 degrees flashlight that is thrown onto the ground.
Edit: Flashlights could also be an alternative to having rendered all marine lights on people's computers.

I don't think that rendering all flashlights is even possible (more than technically, anyway). Sure, some computers can probably handle it, but with half a dozen flashlights, trying to render scenery shadows would be obnoxious, and rendering dynamic shadows for turrets or any objects would probably bring ANY system to its knees.
Still, a pesticide flare gun with sticky flares, with an alien counterpart of infestation goobers would be pretty cool. Double use- light/infestation killer, and if you manage to peg an Onos with one, it might still get away, but it would keep taking damage, and make it take far longer to regen/heal and come back.
*barf*
Having the welder shoot flares is like me shooting web out my ass, it doesn't fit at all
I mean, aren't a sniper rifle and marines related?
Your logic makes bad sense
Gah, why do I let myself get trolled like this?

A for effort.

Word for word quote...
Yeah it's because most of the good ideas have already be suggested by now.
