Search turned up nothing, so here we are. I'd be surprised to no end if nobody had this idea before though, so I apologize if this post is redundant.
The original Natural Selection was an excellent game. That's why we're here, and why we've paid attention to this whole thing through its long history. It had balance issues, and being on GoldSrc means it was unrefined in many ways we expect from our games now, but it was good despite that.
So, why leave it in the past?
Now, it is extremely obvious that the devs are not going to pick up this idea now or even anytime particularly soon after the release of NS2, because it's covered territory. Rehash is not something you want to do when your fledgling business has not yet dropped its first truly professional and independent flagship product. But I know I can't be the only one who wants this.
Sometime after NS2 is released, the devs should consider some kind of work on a "Classic Mode" which brings back (with some small refinements) the gameplay and artistic style of the first Natural Selection. If they want to pick it up directly, this would be a great idea for a $5-10 expansion pack to get some easy funding for UW's next project. If they don't, then providing some material support for a Classic Mod would be a fine way to kickstart NS2's modding community.
You could also get the people who want Combat to come back to quiet down this way. :V

Basically he wants a NS:Source am I right? I dunno if I would play the same old thing again. Look what happend to Fortress Forever.
PS: I feel that an updated version of NS will also be very valuable for getting players into NS2 that aren't just watching it because they played the first one. By playing through what we did, new players would be better able to understand the flavor of the game and would know the things that our community holds in common.
My gut instinct is scream go make a mod for NS2.
At the same time, it might be an interesting project for the devs. However, I don't think they should port 3.2 directly, give it some tweaks first.
NS2 should be able to stand on its own feet. I would actually discourage this if you're implying that it will help players come to grips with NS2. NS2 should be designed as a game of its own, no NS1 background required.
But for now the devs and most of the community (through constructive criticism) should focus on making NS2 the best it can be so that we can bring in a huge player base.

It looks as more like NS2 would get people to come to grips with NS1, than the other way around. I agreed NS2 should stand on it own and that stuff like this takes back seat until NS2 is done, which somehow is what the OP meant I think.
