Don't Stress About Funding

Let us preorder now
I mean, it's May now. It's not unreasonable, I think, to preorder a game 6 months in advance. The other people funding your game are under the assumption that the game will be released summer '09. Even if it's Christmas '09, it's not that far from 6 months from now.

Or you could run some kind of promotion, i.e., join constellation now for $20 and get $10 off the price of the game. I get constellation status, you get cash, I get money off the game when it does come out.

All I'm saying is, don't rush a bunch of stuff so you don't run out of money when there's thousands of people here willing to hand you money now.

I thought I posted in another thread about this idea already (hence my post delete), but I think its a good idea. Even if a pre-order starts, the beta could be polished up for a few months and you would still get the die-hards that are going to buy the game anyways to purchase it. I would imagine you could probably get 1000 people in not to long to purchase the game for say $30.00, and play the beta when its ready. That's $30,000 right there. Of course then there is additional pressure to get the game out even faster now that you have paying customers waiting. I can't imagine that they are near beta just yet though.

    I was just teasing.

Pre-Orders would be a great idea once the dev team has something tangible for the community to interact with.

I would say pre-orders need to wait for one thing -- a release date.

If they can tell us "pre-order now, and you can get the game on day (whatever)", then I'm sure there will be lots of people willing to jump in and start counting down the days, even if release day is still 6 months away.

If they have to tell us, "pre-order now, and you'll get the game whenever we happen to finish it", that's going to be much less palatable.

I think a release date and pre-order should be available when the teaser trailer comes out...

    To concur with Cxwf:

You have to remember, you need to ride a wave of interest. Popping up Preorders without a definitive (at least relatively close) release date will get you an initial surge from dedicated fans. However without that buzz built from the expectation of release, it will rapidly turn into disinterest, and unless managed with good PR, can turn into outright contempt (Hereby christened DNF Syndrome).

In short, doing anything too soon can actually hurt your game more than help it over an extended period of time. That said, based on the information in the other thread currently discussing the NS2 website, I'd like to think that we might have more information soon.

Moreover, they can't start preorders on something that doesn't have a fixed price tag on it yet.
