Doesn't include Steam version?

What's stopping me from immediately pre-ordering the game is this text at the bottom of the page: Pre-order is stand-alone and will auto-update, but assume it doesn't include the Steam version. What does this mean? Will there be a Steam version and a non-Steam version of the final game? Will these two versions have separate server lists? Will pre-ordering ultimately mean I will not have the game on Steam?

Though I could be completely wrong. Even if there are two versions, I can't imagine the developers splitting the playerbase regarding steam and non-steam versions of the game.
I want to throw money at you, man. NS is my most played game of all time in the last decade, you flung me so many college courses.
I'd really rate it as fairly important guys, even if just to avoid disgruntlement from the pre-orders.
EDIT: Quoting Flayra from last October:

This allays my concerns a little, but I really hope the non-Steam versions (if that's what we get, in all honesty I'd probably just prefer the Steam version so it can update without me prompting it) do have the same level of integration, if possible.
If this won't be possible, I will wait until there is a Steam version available. I don't like my games not being on Steam.
I know there are several people voicing negative opinions about Steam in this forum, and Max already said that they are thinking about the same issues, but please don't forget that the huge majority of gamers (especially the Half-Life gamers, which 100% of all NS1 player are) have come to at least accept, if not even love Steam.

It always said that.
I want the black armor thingy but if I can't activate my key on steam then I'll wait until it's released in there and buy it at whatever price it's released (I assume the Steam version will be $20).
This is the only thing holding me back right now.
Thank you.
I personally don't care one iota if the game can activate in Steam or not, for the purposes of updating, etc. What I care about is whether things such as the Steam server browser, Friends, joining & inviting to Friends games etc do. If you look at the existing Steam catalogue, many of the titles use it as a Launcher / patching platform, they're not really 'integrated' into Steam beyond that. A few(/lot, delete to taste) allow the use of the messaging overlay, but you still can't join games.
This is, in my opinion, what's important. Valve probably has the most polished, easiest to use server browser system available (barring the debacle that was the L4D lobby system) and that's what I'm asking for. Comments I've seen here & elsewhere imply it may be that even the non-Steam version can use this, or possibly even the Steam version won't be able to, but obviously until it's confirmed, it makes a difference.

QFT. Launching via steam can be accomplished by using steam's "add external game" jigger that essentially just adds a shortcut to your games list. Updating via steam is a nice-to-have, but one way is much the same as another. Having steam's server browser and friends integration is a must-have for me, though.

Been following the game development for years and it looks really good.

QFT. Having something in Steam is pointless if it doesn't tie into the best features of Steam from a user point of view - Friends and Server Browser. Oh and also, please don't use any of the matchmaking or lobby system from Steamworks. If L4D usage of it is anything to go by, it's awful.
Steam is crappy but only for singleplayer games, for online games like tf2, l4d, ns2 its great.
Its crappy for offline games, because if you damage or don't login for a timeperiod, you need to login again...without internet you are fu**ed
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->If I pre-order NS2, can I play on Steam?
There's a good chance of this, but we can't promise it yet. Once NS2 is officially on Steam and Steamworks, Valve will probably be able to make this happen. But that will be determined later. For now, we can't promise that pre-ordering NS2 will let you play on Steam.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I mean you'll still get the friends interface and matchmaking/server browser that comes with steamworks, the non-steam version will auto-update as well - and it's extremely likely that you'll be able to register the game with your CD key in steam anyway.
The servers will be the same over both versions of the game, it wouldn't be hard to do and would be stupid if they didn't do it.
I'll eventually buy NS2 SE any way it goes because I want to support the dev team but I'll wait just a little longer until this steam thing is sorted out with official statements.
