The Onos looks awesome, the whole more armoured at the front for extra protection and less at the rear etc is awesome, but its nothing on the new skulk. That thing looks so ###### awesome, I want to pump my 10 LMG bullets into it right now...
One question I have, I feel myself a long time member (been here since well before NS release), although I don't have 3000+ posts for cred, but I think the Onos looks great. I see the blocky bone structure art direction you guys used in it, and I do like it I assume it will carry somewhat to the other aliens. However, With bone density that thick, does this onos have carapace (or NS2's equivalent) or is this the stock model? Also, are there plans for visual cues to show what upgrade the lifeform has? I.E. a "bulked up" onos to show carapace, visual cues for cloaking, etc?
The other real question is I know Alpha may not be "imminent", but could we expect the NSTR2 equivalent before the alpha? I for one would LOVE to get my hands on the map editor to start working out a custom map!
And many thanks again for all you guys do. I don't have the free time to commit to the forums and game as much as I did back in College when NS came out, but this game still takes up most of my free time. Keep it up, and I hope this Alpha phase coming up will be constructive for you guys.
BTW, how far are the in game mechanics going? Is the team loading up builds and playing through testing for engine bugs, etc, or have you gotten to the implementation of gameplay and testing abilities for balance, etc... ?
The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the new Onos was "OH ######! RUN!"
I'm a huge fan of big, heavy armor and military hardware in general really interests me so I'm stoked to see just how awesome the new Onos looks. I can't wait to get behind the wheel of that monstrosity!
I can only hope the Marines get something even half as cool looking!
glad to hear ppl are enjoying the sound! thanx for the possitve comments. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
- to answer a few questions regarding the sound
-this was a post production sound process - tho it is very likly that some/most of these sounds will be used ingame. yes some impulse responce reverbs were used for the guns behind the door,- it is unlikly that there will be any impulse responce reverbs being done in the engine in realtime as even in a dedicated sound program this type of reverb usualy can't be processed in realtime... but for most other sounds in this sequence it was a free VST reverb (smart electronics ambience) that is pretty low impact on CPU so a similar reverb algorythm could easly be used in a game engine.(tho there are ways of simulating echos/reverbs without ingame DSP.)
in terms of sound API we are looking into FMOD as a possibility (this would give us in game DSP effects like reverb / occlusion + other things.) tho we may find another sollution.
and just for the curious the infestation sound is a combination of pot plant, orange and a wet rag <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

The criticism of the Onos wasn't aimed at anyone specifically, even if you did get named for the design Cory. Someone had to model it, skin it, animate it, script it in the cinematic, capture it and post process it. That the whole chain of artists and technicians let it pass before it reached the public is rather disappointing. Maybe it's this whole iterative process, maybe everyone was thinking "it's good enough for now, it'll be better in the next iteration".<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Why can't you just accept that different people like different things, some like it some don't, please don't make your opinions seem like the be all and end all, after all they are just your opinions.
Just want to say I loved the teaser and personally I like the new onos. I look forward to seeing what you have in store for us with the new alien models, and look forward to reading all the posts about why they aren't perfect in everyway for everybody.
Sounds like someone needs to let go of their personal NS2 fantasy.
I really enjoyed the teaser, and expected to see change and to be surprised.
If I would have seen the same NS1 Onos model with just updated graphics... I would have been very disappointed.
Criticize the art assets once we get the alpha, I'd rather they get the game to testing so we can refine the game then. Til then, try not to insult the person building the game, and who had a large influence on the NS1 you came to love.
Thank you Cory, you're input and efforts on this game are APPRECIATED.
Hi all first i wanted to say that am a long time reader maybe second or third time posting here. First off the game is looking AMAZING and am even sure that it will look better when the polishing and the finish touches are there. I really respect you guys and your work and love it I mean look what four guys could accoumplish compared to big gaming companys that have 100+ people working on a projekt. I appreciate the love and hard work you are putting into this game.
Hey dudes, i bought the special edition, and im really suprised of what have you finished ... looks like nothing except spamming twitter of what crap are you doing (reinstalling os, spending 4 hours to a making of for the teaser). i hope you get the alpha (what you should have done yet!) very fast to us.

A question i don't think i saw it being answered yet: When the onos starts pounding on the door, and the side vents start shaking up. Are those in-game physics too or just post-production effects?

Chrome, you've got to be kidding.. Pull your head in and just wait for the game (alpha) to be released. We are lucky that they keep us involved with the development.. I'm disgusted that people have the nerve to speak to professionals like that. At least wait until Alpha before you start complaining and ranting about the slightest problems with the ART.
They would have gone through design after design to get to this point, Cory probably spent a great deal of time on that model.. Just wait until alpha is out before you start nit-picking tiny elements of the art and a trailer.
Have some respect for these guys, right now, they would be under huge amounts of stress getting things complete, the last thing they need is someone who is supposed to be respectable basically spitting on their work and calling it filth. pfft @ your attitude..

This is from Flayra's RPS interview after the release of the trailer --
<b>Clearly the recent footage has sent gamers’ pulses a-racing - but how representative is it of what we’ll see in game? Will it really look that good?</b>
<i>Thanks! Yes, it really does look that good. We’re still optimizing and tweaking of course, but there’s no trickery there. There are a couple scripted bits in there that may not be part of the in-game experience like the Onos ducking through a door, the Onos moving slowly (he’s a playable character and no one wants to move that slowly!) and <u>the metal flaps fluttering when the door is smashed</u>, but I would say it’s very representative of the game.</i>
I hope that helps! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I wonder if Onos can smash through doors in the game? I bet they can...
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->There is nothing about the Onos animations that couldn't be in game. And in fact the roar animation will be used in game, though the exact ability that will use it is still being sorted out. The main thing is that the animations will be more separated up, rather then strung together in one long animation, and will be player dependent. So, chances are a player controlling the Onos won't walk slowly straight towards a marine and stop and roar at him, though there would be nothing keeping them from doing that. But the player will probably be running and looking from side to side and jumping or strafing or using the attacks or...you get the idea. While it might not have the same exact dramatic impact as in the teaser it will have a different but equally dramatic impact from the marine perspective, as that thing runs at you. And, we have animation blending, which will make the transitions from one animation to another much smoother.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I just started wondering if Onos movement could be changed so that it actually would act like in movie. Basically just change movement method to car style movement. Moving mouse would turn the head. Just think about driving tank in middle of marines and just start bashing them with your head.
Of course this would change way of playing Onos totally... Maybe in fun way. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Great work, folks, but you knew I liked it for some time by now. Looking forward to the tools!
You guys have all put alot of effort into the new art style for the kharaa and it definitely shows through the teaser. We are all lucky to be able to join you through the development process and I think a few take that for granted. Don't let immature comments get to you Cory, your artwork is amazing and some people just don't like things to change.
I am also a bit disappointed that some people in this forum who are meant to be respected in this community are bad mouthing the new model without even offering constructive criticism. Especially when I doubt they could come up with anything better.
Bit of armchair community management here, but folks: Let it go. In the end, it'll only discourage people from voicing valid criticism, and that's not going to help anyone.
