Is there anyway to get NS working on windows XP x64? When I load it it either a.) does not load at all o b.) just loads the main splash background with no buttons popping up.

Yes, it is possible. I'm running it now with no problems. Make sure you're using openGL, not direct3d.

I had the same problem, just change to openGL makes a big difference.

Is there a way for me to change it to openGL without loading the game? Currently, I double click the game within steam and it acts like its loading then nothing ever happens. Then if i go to task manager hl.exe is running but nothing ever pops up. How do i run it in openGL mode without ever being in game?

the command line argument is -gl

IIRC you can rightclick on NS in steam and somewhere in there it lets you set the command line that is used to launch the game. Simply append -gl to that.

Awesome, thank you, I was trying -opengl

I'll try that after work today.

Damn, both -gl and -cl_gammaramp 0 didn't work. Note also that this is not centralized to NS, but half-life 1 also does the exact same thing.

Basically what happens is I double click Natural Selection and steam says 'preparing to play NS' and the hour glass comes up then about 5 seconds later disappears and nothing happens. Then in task manager hl.exe is running.

I am running windows XP x64 with Geforce 8800 GTX with 64 bit drivers.

    Any ideas?

Just installed the latest xp 64 bit drivers (released May 06 2009) and reinstalled NS and tried with -gl -cl_gammaramp 0. Still no dice.

well, there is no command line option cl_gammaramp 0

cl_gammaramp 0 is a console command that disables the gammaramp if you have issues with it (green text on the score board and black sprites).

As you problem is getting it to launch in the first place, ignore that bit.

    My only suggestion is this:
To a very thorough malware scan followed up by closing all programs outside of steam and attempting to launch NS.

    As a side note:
You CAN put in console commands at the command line, but it is like this: -toconsole +cl_gammaramp 0

It's actually funny because right after i read that post my virus scanner detected malware on my computer.

I'm currently running an online scanner that should take care of the issues. I'll report back if NS works after it finishes.

Unfortunately NS still doesn't work <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I guess ill have to play it on my laptop and drop to 8 fps all the time or just wait for NS2 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    Ok,

    Uninstall NS
    Uninstall Half-Life

    Reboot

    Reinstall Half-Life
    Play the Half-Life Hazard Course
    Install NS
    Run NS

At which step does your comp fail you?
