Is My Fps Supposed To Drop With A Ti4400?

i have a athlon 1900+ with 512 pc2700 ram and a leadtek geforce4 TI4400 @290/600

i play at 1152x864 with 2xAA and i noticed in base it slowed to like 50 fps from 75 (the refresh rate) and i thought maybe if i turn AA off it would be a constant 75 but i was wrong...

i just wanna know if anyone with a similar configuration also experiences this slowdown... i get 10700 on 3dmark2001 SE, and apparently thats a pretty good score for my specs so i just wanna know if this is normal.. thx

With that system you shouldn't even go below 99 FPS (or your v-sync refresh rate).
But, NS seems to be bugged.... Also, there's a bug with the half-life engine, it starts to consume too much CPU ressources when you reach a certain point (a certain number of polyes or something) every system slows down...

You are unlucky with 50 fps ??

I got 20 fps during normal play and 5-10 fps at bases.

It's because of the models. Too many models at one place -> system slowdown.
    That's a normal thing in Half-Life.

Sounds normal to me... The game takes a lot of power.

Mine is 4-10 FPS at marine bases and hives (most of the time) and around 15-25 everywhere else.

Are you running the game in OpenGL? What OS are you using? Have you tried the latest Nvidia or motherboard chipset drivers?

I've got a XP 1600+, 256mb DDR, and a Ti4400. I play at 1024x768x32, 2x or 4x FSAA (no noticable hit in HL) and 8x anistropy. The game runs at a constant 85fps, my frame cap. I only get 9400 on 3dMark, so you should be running the game at whatever your frame cap is.

    windows 2000 SP3
    latest motherboard drivers
    40.82 detonators
    opengl mode

fina: by constant 85 fps do u mean NO MATTER WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON it will NEVER drop below 85?

I don't run the game with cl_showfps enabled, so I don't know for sure. The only slowdown I ever notice is when the marines build farms of turrets.

Getting a constant fps of 50 is normal even with a computer like yours. THe half life engine was not optimized for a geforce 4, and not even for the geforce 1. I mean, look, the engine doesn't even let you go past 99 fps. That means that it will use more processing power and vid power than say, ut2k3 or q3 might.
50 is good, and there is almost no way for teh eye to tell the diff btw 50 and 75 fps. The geforce 4 is designed in such a way as 2x FS anti-aliasing doesn't produce too much fps slowdown.
Due to the immensly large number of polygons and models, there will be slowdown, especially in a marine base. normally, when not near a base, you should be getting 99 fps.
If you want to see how taxing the half life egine can be on your system, go bind impulse 101 to a key and drop a ton of satchels in the regular game with HD pak enabled. Then try and detonate them.
or, throw several smoke grenades in oen area in counterstrike and then look at your fps.

    I can notice a huge difference between 24fps, 60fps, and 85fps.

The key thing is people run it in D3D. HL was not coded for D3D thus running in D3D (even with todays newest and greatest vid cards) doesnt do well. You WILL take a FPS hit when running in D3D on any HL game/mod. Change it to OpenGL. also on a side note, if any of you were wondering why sprays and decals didn't show...because those dont work in D3D eather.

    No you can't.

It has been PROVEN, that it is IMPOSSIBLE for the human eye to recognize any changes after around 50 FPS. It just can't do it.

actually, its 72fps, not 50. I used to think it was 32...but then I was proven wrong by a friend. its 72, I looked it up on multiple sources.
