This is a video that appears to have been shot by a robot of sorts inside a sewer. They've found some 'growths' inside the sewer and I found them to be very alien looking. There's theory that they're some type of Bryozoa, but others disagree due to the nature and speed of its movement.
Either way, I find this video terrifying.

Interesting effect though. I think you could get something like that with some clever animating textures and multiple texure layers with whatever D3D effects are applicable. The way the thing contracts is creepy, making the walls move like that in game would be sick.
good suggestion.
Right?
Turns out they're large clusters of worms, attached to each other. Freaky stuff, I'm pretty glad I don't live in a sewer, really.
In NS2 terms, though, having large amounts of the stuff animated with an effect like that would no doubt be a massive drain on resources, but it'd be perfect for a few 'blobs' of slightly different infestation. Maybe it could be worked into gameplay somehow?
For example, what if the gorge fired these 'blobs' at walls or structures, and infestation grew from them?
Still some freaky stuff :)
I also don't think this would be hard to have in-game. Just a prop that has a randomised timer for animation and randomised size (with a min/max) so no 10min duration of "contraction" but no 1 second contractions... that'd just be disturbing.
Perhaps a doodad prob that can be shot / blown up but if marines are near it hurts them to some degree (less so in heavy obviously) and if aliens are near it can heal them.
Skulks gain more advantage than say Fades / Onos would from it though.
That could add a very interesting game-play element. Do the marines hunt and destroy these things before the aliens come through and run away 1/2 HP only to heal from one of these things right around the corner and come straight back?
Consider it the Alien version of dropping medpacks :)
ROFL!
