NS2: Combat Idea

For those who do not know, after a while, Natural Selection: Combat was added to the game, allowing people to play the game without the necessity of Commanders and building structures. This was a great idea for many who enjoyed playing the game without having to worry about having a competent team (and especially leader) to win. Now, I don't know if NS2 is going to have a Combat-type mode like NS1, but if it does, I have a suggestion.

In addition to having the normal Combat mode (like in NS1), there could be an option to have a mode where there are two teams and players on each team can choose to be a Marine or an Alien. This way, you have people playing whatever race/class/specialty they like without worrying about what team they are on and this would cut down on the necessity for balancing between the two sides as both sides will have the same opportunity for the same units/upgrades.

I understand this goes against the main function of the storyline/lore of the game, but it may be something looking into, hence the suggestion.

Interesting idea. Go code it up. NS2 will NOT have Combat, the community has to design itself.

Combat will not be added to NS2 by the devs. They have made this clear. They also have made clear that they are giving free reign of the custom modding system, and they expect various combat style mods to pop up through community efforts.

This sounds like an interesting mod and I wonder would the two teams would complement each other.

There was a thread in General Discussion, where someone plans to mod in Combat. Might do to have a look. I don't remember the thread topic itself.

Well, I just went back and actually *read* this thread and what I stated above was sorta irrelevant (it's what happens when you read the topic and then skim read). But yeah, you'd have to mod that one in yourself. I think it's an idea (or something similar) worth looking at by the developers though: a 'practice mode', where you could choose which lifeform/equipment/upgrades etc. to use, it would help players get familiar with each of the different roles at their leisure (class differences in NS for example, are far greater and more numerous than those in TF2).

At first I thought you were just sounding crazy...

But then I get what you're saying and this doesn't sound half-bad...the alien and marine models would have to be changed in some way that players could tell who is on what team.

Actually, that is a great idea. No one would complain or have to wait in the ready room for someone to leave the team that they wanted to play, whether it was a marine team or an alien team. However, your missing one BIG question, what will each team have to kill to win? Would it be a number of kills on players? I don't think this would work because one player could accomplish this on his own against an entire team. Would it be a hive? It's easier to shoot or bite a hive, because it's bigger and you have more room to hide. Would it be a comm chair that you would have to kill? Same goes for this, where a comm chair is smaller and you have almost no place to hide.

I don't know. I think that this isn't going to work out, even though maybe it could, with implementation of other features. Maybe each team gets a chair and a hive? I don't know.

My proposal for combat in NS2 is that it is just like the combat in NS1 when 3.0 was launched. Where each player could only get a certain amount of upgrades and not completely ruin the game by getting level 10 thickened skin and redemption as an Onos. This is what ruined the combat side of NS1. It was a lot better when you could get 10 points (i think that was the limit) and if you wanted to be an Onos, you would have to give up some upgrades.

It just became way too pointless when all these extra levels were added. I'm saying this because I was one of those people who would go 100+ kills and less than 10 deaths because I upgraded the hell out of my marine. And other players would go Onos and be literally impossible to kill.

    Just my two cents.

Keep it simple and balanced the way NS1 was originally and NS2 will kick ass.

I think that NS2 should be a port of NS1 3.0, but with better graphics and physics.

    (Shameless Plug)

I'm going to be working on combat for NS2, and I can state that this is far outside the scope of the 'Combat' project.
On that same note, the mode described by the OP would defiantly provide for some interesting game play scenarios and deserves some consideration by the modding community.

The combat I have planned does not have limited levels per se. But there are mechanics planned to prevent the levels from going out of control.
