compensation for mappers?

<div class="IPBDescription">"official maps only"</div>Since NS2 is a moneymaking game (as opposed to a free HL mod), and since it seems you will be relying at least partially on the community for maps to be included at the game's release, do you have any sort of monetary compensation in mind for people whose maps are good enough to make the "official" cut? It seems completely reasonable to me, even necessary, since you guys would be profiting off other people's hard work.
Perhaps a contest would be a good way to draw interest in mapping for the game...

...job offers are acceptable too :))

I would be careful about quoting non-dev members about game info. He is right though. Here's the dev quote:
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->With Natural Selection, we included the best community maps as "official" and part of the game and we'll be doing the same for Natural Selection 2. Because we are selling NS2 though, that means we'll be buying maps from you guys outright.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->And <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/news/2007/05/natural_selection_2_texturing" target="_blank">here</a> is the blog that's from.

It's worth noting that this is an old blog post, and this may have changed since they released the NS2TR alpha to only a few mappers. They may still do something like this when they release the tools with the NS2 alpha, but I wouldn't count on UWE to buy/include your map.

    Can't wait for tools !!

For some people mapping contests provide the drive and inspiration through participation in order to achieve their desired end product, for others it does not. If I were serious about designing a level for NS2 I'd be keeping it under wraps for a large portion of it's life. I might style test with a few people, although a lot of it would be a case of "beginning style test screens" and "end screens", it's just the way I'd do it and the way I think I'd stay focused.

I wouldn't count on them to buy/include my maps either, but that doesn't mean I won't try :-P for me it's just a hobby, and I still have yet to release a finished map for any game (working on a l4d campaign right now with a friend - 2 of 5 maps are in beta stage so far)

I don't see why you wouldn't just make great maps for everyone to enjoy, having created a number of okay maps myself I think its good enough just to leave my mark within the map in my own little way like any good artist would.

having your map in a highly polished and successful title is compensation enough - not many people can put that on their resumes.

It certainly would be a powerful addition to your resume, to have one of your maps included with a successful video game at release. And I wouldn't be deterred from or encouraged to work on mapping in either case, I find it quite interesting to enable different strategies for classes and teams as I plan out my levels for the game.

At the same time, I want to point out that it would strike me as a terrible business decision on their part to not offer compensation on materials that will be PACKAGED AND SHIPPED WITH THE GAME AT RELEASE.
I'm thankful that they are definitely offering compensation after all.

    Agreed!
To top it off a friend of mine who is doing a 3D Game Modelling course is going to help me with any extra 3D Models I might need in-game and custom textures!
Portfolio boost for him if my maps shifts with the official launch :D

I would do it all for free if my map had a chance to be included in retail. Map making is a labour of love for me, hopefully a career when I build up my portfolio. It's just a job I love to do.

They mentioned in the recent NSPlayer interview that they were planning on shipping with four maps. It seemed implied that these were all in-house productions (they have two[?] mappers after all, and also mentioned that maps followed a certain [in-house] style and consistency).
So, is the community mapping thing still happening? Any official word?

We'll probably here more about it with the release of the mapping + other tools. And yes, them working on releasing tools means community maps will probably still get in. They need to make sure they get at least <i>some</i> maps though, therefore the in-house mapping.

Gotta get crunching either way. If they release the tools this month and the game at the end of fall it's 5 months to make a map to stand the test of time. (:
