yah yah...spaceship
but really! i think an outdoor map would be friggin awesome for NS, just make it at night so aliens arent screwed, add trees and stuff, and the aliens could hide in the trees and pounce on the marines...u could make hives in caves or something, or add some kind of landscape to justify hives. the command center could be like and abandoned bunker with like 1-2 stories. im not sure how u could make all this work or find a way to do an outdoor map, but i could tell u it would be awesome to not have hallways anymore, and u can finally move around. oh well im starting to ramble, someone let me know if ur willing to do it. as to storyline, u could say the spaceship crashed on a remote planet or whatever and the aliens have escaped from the ship and the marines need to quarintine (spelling?) the aliens.

People can still make outside NS maps, its just that there won't be any chance of them being official at the moment.
i'd dig it if it were... a cave.. or forest maybe, but i think it still wouldn't be too much of a good fit in NS..
but hey! if the ones you did DID fit into the NS atmosphere.. it'd be damn great wouldn't it?
it is able to make skys so that bullets ar flying through it and when u dun want that the players get out of the gameworld place a invisible wall at the top of the open area.............
so its realy easy to make outdoor maps
I've also given thought to making an "epic" map like Total Anihillation has... basically, a giant, wide open map with lots of resource nodes, so that both teams can build up a huge base, and it takes time for the teams to meet in the middle of the map, and so a huge, long, drawn-out campaign ensues. Could be interesting, but it might not work given the delicate NS gameplay balance...
Biodomes.
Thing is, most people who are doing outdoor maps aren't doing it because it fits their vision, but rather just to 'prove that it can be done' or some other quest like that. Which, in my opinion, is the worst possible reason.
If the only way you can reach your overall goal is by having outdoor areas or an entirely outdoor map, so be it... And if you're fine with the fact that you won't fit in with the NS background story and gameplay styles, that's fine... But if you're just doing it because the guidelines say not to, go find something else to do.
Skulks don't stick to clip brushes, so those could be used to prevent them walking across the sky.
(Though I'm pretty much completely opposed to outdoor maps - NS is all about tight corridors and moody atmosphere)
Silent Running
No no, stay clear of trigger_hurts. They do more damage then good if used like that. Clipping something in NS, makes it impossible for skulks to wall-climb also, so clipping things is fine.
Something along the lines of Starship Troopers. When they have to defend the base (also know as the scene where Diz dies.).
That's more of what I want. Just use big rocks.
Someone of this damned forum told me otherwise..... the sneaks!
SEE TIHS IS WHY YOU NEED TO TELL US HOW TO MAKE THE INFESTED TEXTURES!!! IF we made our own infested textures for things such as hanging "bio mass" we could really create some neat stuff... (I Know i'm gonna have some neat stuff)

Yes -- the biodome idea would work really well if it had a plethora of vegetation.
My emphasis is on 'natural terrain', not outdoor maps.

I can't say I agree with anyone who thinks aliens wouldn't have fun in outdoor maps. As a lerk I'd have a blast. I think you guys need to keep an open mind and realize we aren't talking about 1000x1000 unit rooms with nothing in them for aliens to hide under/behind/inside. Like I was saying with the map I am designing, there will be an outdoors area, but only 1/4 of the map will be outdoors. The three hives will be tucked away into caverns througout the cliff face. I can understand your concern if the entire map was outdoors however.
Ns_hera has much larger rooms than most cs or dod_maps. And yes, there are walls, ceilings and vents, but an outdoorarea can have tunnels, lots of vegetation, rocks water etc and always walls of course.
chocobos map it would be in a canyon kinda think like a giant spaceship was carrying aliens to the a research facilty
things go wrong spaceship crashes alien escape alien creates hive surviving marines try and trake it out ok
so its in the canyon with a space ship covering it so u dont have 2 worry bout the crawling thing then have areas like little paths were marine walk across and such and eveveyr now and then a ledgde then were would be some spots that go into the canoyon where the hives are
lighting so heres a problem maybe the space ship as lights on its outside or something
and a good idea for the start pos for the marines would be the space ship part of it torn open like the bottom or side and the marines start right there then they jump down and their in the canyon
I'm compiling it right now, hence the post

This was the basic layout i came up with, looks similar to fubars.

I mean don't get me wrong, a huge epic battle where one team could have lots of Onos while the other has lots of heavies would be fun.. and stuff.. but really.. If it was that simple of a map with the aliens in a cave with all 3 hives connected, then the aliens would have WAY too much of an advantage.. Protecting every entrance would be simple for a good gorge, plus then 3 hives would be up in no time and the Marines would get cheesed.
Gotta keep the game balanced.. and I really think that the current level scheme is perfect for the story setting.
that being my opinion. (so don't spazz and flame plz)

(Damn Spelling mistakes)
It would be easy for the marines to break through the aliens. Siege gun outside the front of the enterance, problem solved.
[Edit] I do see your point about the hives being connected and getting hives fast, but if you've got a smart commander you could easily move into one of those hives before they get all three. Anyway, there's obviously goign to be some issues that need to be worked out, but that's part of mapping. Fixing balance issues as they come up.
just make it so that the cieling pushes the player downwarn accorindgly... skulks wouldnt be able to climb on the ceiling.. you know sort of how dod uses a force to keep people from spawn camping. it could work with a little creativity. as a matter of fact, im certain it would work.
